As long as you have all your WB disks, you should be able to. You will need to use HD toolbox to set up the drive for use on your system (and partition it etc),
once installed you can then format your partitions etc. at will...
As far as size goes, AFAIK anything below 4GB is ok with WB3.0.

If you have a disk labelled 'install' as part of your WB3.0 set it should be there too...

install is the disk to have at hand you can do a fast cold boot into a minimal workbench and sort out the hd with it.
keep it safe and back it up! :-D

My Amiga came in the cartoon pack Dpaint4AGA etc, would I have the install disk in there??

The Install disk should be with the Workbench disks. They'll all have the same label.
Use the Install disk to boot from.

The install disk did not come as standard with workbench 3.0 unless you bought the machine with a hard-drive already installed. I had this problem when i first put a 356mb 3.5 HDD in my A1200. It cost me £220 at the time, which was a bout the going rate. Still got the drive. So u will need to get a copy of the disk or HDtoolbox off Aminet
