Title: Problem networking with samba to the pc
Post by: AF-Domains.net on February 05, 2005, 09:58:38 PM
I have recently just installed samba and got it to picck all the pc shares up on the Amiga but I can't get the Amiga to appear in the my network places on the pc.

I am using 2000 Adv. server.

What could be the problem and how could I correct?

Thanks

Similar problem here - I can get to the pc shares, but can't see the Amiga shares from the pc. I can ping my amiga by network name or ip, but the net use command says it can't find the computer name specified!

Any suggestions on correcting the problem?
Could it have something to do with the version of samba being used?

Thanks

I'm not a network guy, but if there is a WINS setting on the Amiga's SAMBA client, you can point it to the IP address of the Win 2000 server, and then point the Win 2000 servers' WINS to the Amiga's IP.

I tried using the WINS but it interrupted every other connection aswell.

I did manage to get the Amiga Computer to show up on the pc once but it kept on saying that it couldn't be contacted.

about 2 years ago I got it to network fully to the pc but the Amiga couldn't access any of the files now it is the other way round.

Anyway of getting it to work?

Thanks

Amiga Samba requires three things for you to "see" the Amiga on a Windows SMB network:

1) You must be running nmbd, either as a daemon, or as inetd.

2) You must have name entries in your TCP/IP stack hosts database that correspond to the names on your PC network. The IPs have to be static.

You must be able to do "Ping " or "MiamiPing " or name resolving in Samba isn't going to work.

3) (edit) You need an LMHOSTS file in Samba:lib/. It's a text file with an IP address and a host name on each line, for each of your machines. i.e.

192.168.0.1 PC1
192.168.0.2 PC2
192.168.0.3 AMIGA
192.168.0.4 LINUXBOX

Once you've done all three, you should be able to see the Amiga in My Network Places.

How do you use nmbd?

I use Genesis and easynet not miami.

in my samba foleder there is only a lib not libs directory should I create one?

Yeah sorry, thats lib, not libs.

Too run nmbd do

Run >NIL: nmbd -D

..when Genesis is online. You can put it in a script or something.

Or you can set it up as an inetd, the same way you did with smbd. You may already have done that if you've been following AmigaSamba's guide.

I am also running AmiTCP 4.0 to get it on the internet.

What script should be put in?

Would it possible to be sent the AmigaSamba guide since I don't appear to have it.

Thanks

I don't know AmiTCP, but if it can run a script when you go online, that's the one to use.

AmigaSamba is a website, www.amigasamba.org .

Ok, then you may be using Samba 2.2.5. The nmbd in this version does not work properly. Downgrade to 2.0.7.

I downgraded to 2.0.7 the Amiga now shows up on the pc but it nows says that the server is not configured for transactions or the network path cannot be found.

It now says I am not authorised to log on to this station.

Anyway of fixing this?

Thanks

I can now connect to the amiga from the pc aslong as I also put \all after it otherwise it says that the server is not configured for transactions.

How do you configure an Amiga server for transactions?

Thanks

AFAIK nmdb does only work correctly, if the right IP addresses are entered into the hosts configuration file. And maintaining the hosts file means using static IP addresses or at least assuring that DHCP always give the same IP address to each computer. Having wrong IP addresses in your hosts file might lead to your problem.

I don't see the benefit from using DHCP on a home network anyway. Even on Windows, DHCP needs around two minutes to determine the network address. With static IP addresses the network is up and usable at once.

Bye,
Thomas

I have some windows registry files that are suppoed to help control password handling, someting about plain password encryption - they haven't helped me, but I'll send them along if you think they'll be useful.

I get Error 53 name not recognized when I try 'net use z: \\amiga4k\ram', but 'ping amiga4k' works...

Amiga and PC now talk to each other with no problems.

Thanks for all your help.
