Title: Can I overclock my Apollo 060 safely?
Post by: ChaosLord on February 05, 2005, 04:49:19 PM
I heard that there is a 'new' version of 060 out which
has a smaller core so it runs cooler and can safely be
overclocked.

How do I know if my Apollo 1260 has a new 060 or an old one?

NOTE this is in an A1200T Elbox Power Tower with Mediator.

If I overclock the 060 will it screw up my mediator?

I have one of the first primitive mediators.

Hi!

Overclocking your CPU should not cause any problems with the Mediator, my Blizzard 060 is overcloocked to 72mhz and my Mediator is running fine.

A limitation you may have is the ram module/s so get yoourself decent 50ns Simm/s.

My CPU is the latest revision and does not even need a fan at that speed although most of the time I run it at 66mhz which I find more stable with my 60ns 128mb Simms.

Even if you have an earlier revision 060 you may still be able to overclock and use a cooling fan.

Stachu100 is the man to speak to when it comes to overclocking these cards, he would be able to change the CPU and fit a socket for the oscilator so you can swap it out easily.

Stan done the work on my Blizzard PPC and it runs perfect :afro:

It's one of the only Amiga accelerators I would risk overclocking, because the RAM can be run at 1/2 CPU clock. In other words, you're not overclocking irreplaceable logic.

With the latest mask (Rev 6) 80MHz is generally achievable. The RAM will run at 40MHz, which is still quite fast on the Apollo (performing better than the Blizzard at 50MHz, according to bustest). Mine has ran in this configuration for several years now with no detectable issues.

If your card has its original CPU installed, I will almost guarantee it's not a Rev 6.

My card was purchased from Per-Gunnar Johansson (amiga.org member PG) in Sweden, the fellow originally upgrading these cards several years ago. PG does excellent, perfect work and is highly recommended.
