Hi,
I've had an A1200 for over ten years and have been happy enough with it sat on OS 3.0. However, I recently bought a Subway USB controller for it (thanks AmigaKit.com - great service!) and also Kickstart 3.1 and a new set of OS disks as this was listed as a requirement.
I've installed the USB controller and the new ROMs and all is OK, with the Amiga booting up properly, etc.
However, what would be the best way for me to install OS 3.1 over my existing 3.0 installation whilst preserving all my settings? I'm quite happy with the way I've got everything set up and don't really want to install again from scratch!
Any advice appreciated!

AFAIK all settings are preserved automatically if you just install it on top of your existing setup.
However, you should make a backup of Sys:Prefs/Env-Archive, S:User-startup and S:Startup-Sequence, just to be sure. (A complete backup of the system partition wouldn't hurt, either. Just copy all files into a directory of your work partition.)
Bye,
Thomas

Nothing more to say :-)
I.e. I've upgraded my system from OS 2.0 upto 3.9 in the last 10 years without losing any settings at any time.

You might want to do a backup before you run along if you're not totally experienced.
I have uppgraded my computer since 1.1 up to 3.9 with preserved settings. Altered icons change if overwritten, however. But mainly settings are stored inside envarc: for Workbench. Programs use their own settings files.
Well, it's all allready said... :)

Cool! Thanks for all your comments!
It's been a long time since I've installed an Amiga OS, and I've done it from scratch previously.

@InTheSand
Thanks :-) Glad everything got there safely and works OK.

Hi,
Yahoo... I'm now on OS3.1! The installer unfortunately replaced setpatch with an older version than the one previously installed, and it also replaced the 68040.library, causing my 68060 to choke on startup - but I've sorted both of those now.
Very pleased with the Subway... My A1200 now has an SD/CF combo flash card reader attached and this is MUCH faster than my previous parallel port and joystick port Zip drive bodge!
In people's opinion on here, would it be worth the bother of me upgrading to OS3.5 or 3.9? Although I have the 68060, I don't have a graphics card and for networking, my installation of AmiTCP and the cnet.device works OK. Are there any real benefits for a relatively unexpanded system other than slightly more up to date software?

I would move to the latest classic operating, Amiga OS 3.9 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=153)
It has many great additional features over AmigaOS 3.5 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=175) and many OS bug fixes.

Hi,
OK... I'm considering this...
One question: does it have to be installed directly from the CD? Or would it still work if I copied the CD's contents on to an SD or CF card and installed from there?
Although I have a Squirrel SCSI interface, the CD drive I was using with it has long since died, so I use a PC as an intermediate step for most stuff.

This should work OK.
Remember to also then make an assign for AmigaOS 3.9 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=40) to the SD card (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=34) or Compact Flash card (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=34).

i.e.
c:assign AmigaOS3.9: CF0:
Change CF0: to the device name of your media card.

OK, thanks for the info.
Looks like I'll be making another purchase soon then!

@IntheSand:
Just naming the CF/SD card "AmigaOS3.9" would be the best.

OK... cool!
Oh well... After much deliberation, I've placed an order for OS3.9!
Go AmigaKit.com! Hope your delivery is as speedy as the last one!
