Title: IBrowse2.3 -- I have no choice now!
Post by: Targhan on February 25, 2003, 11:29:08 PM
Yup, the whole uploading an avatar think has forced me to spend the
$Too_Much for IBrowse.

So, does anyone else know what other things IBrowse does that
Voyager/Aweb cannot do, or cannot do well?

Thanks guys!

Have a read of our full review of IBrowse 2.3 at www.swaug.org.uk (http://www.swaug.org.uk/ibrowse)

The review gives comparisons between the big three browsers on the Amiga.  It states what sites are now available to Amiga owners because of IBrowse.

SWAUG:  Excellent article!  I enjoyed it.  While it was definately pro-IBrowse, it was sure footed enough to make me feel better about purchasing the product.

I have by the way just registered.  Now, does anyone know how long IOSpirit takes to process these things?

Shouldn't take too long, I don't think. Mine came in less than a day.

I really like iBrowse URL Prefs functionality for activating and deactivating features or spoofing based on the URLs.  I don't think AWeb or Voyager even come close to that function.

I like the method when adding url's or the fast and easy way to add linkbuttons. You just drag the link from the URL bar into the linkbuttons area and you can set whatever name you want.

Also a neat Ibrowse function, is the download window! I mean.. Opera got it too, but the Ibrowse one have been there since the start, before Opera was born even. And thats a nice standard.

AmIRC also got the same good downloading window making it comfortable to use.

"You dont need ghz, you just need an Amiga!" :)

If I upgrade Ibrowse 1.xx, do I still need to obtain MiamiSSLUSA.library?  Or does Genesis support SSL?  thnx

Download AmiSSL v2 from www.iospirit.de webpage! Then you wont need to worry about MiamiSSL. AmiSSL v2 works nicely tougether with both Miami and Genesis.

Well, if I'm going to be any webmastering on these community sites--I needed IBrowse as well as the other two (I've had Voyager the longest).

As far as features, I have to say the one I'm most pleasantly surprised with is the support for ContactManager.  I prefer the single point access for url's.  Although, I do hope anyone else using this feature realizes that the occational backup is a VERY good thing.

@AmiDelf

Hmm, I'd like to try v2.3 to see if it's worth changing from Voyager.
From what I've read here, it is.

However, I cannot get the demo version to download from
www.iospirit.de using V3.

The usual shift-click routine doesn't lead to a succesful download.

Any advice?

Cheers,

Too much money for IB 2.x?  Last I remember it cost around 30UKP, IMO for what it does and how well it does it (the latter is far more important), perfectly acceptable.  How much do you think the developers' time spent on the product to a very small market is worth then?

Ho Daz!

That would be great! Please go ahead.
Have you got the SSL module as well?
If so, include that too.

Many thanx,

I had no problem using V to download.  So far, it looks like I can do some things with IB that I cannot do with Voyager, but it doesn't do enough to replace Voyager.

It is nice.  I think my money was well spent.

@Targhan

Err.. I think I know what you mean.

The amiga.org refresh is VERY slow with V3, but I assumed it was due
to the very heavy use of frames, etc.

I reckon too many websites are unduly cluttered with stuff that's
little used. Often a case of 'If you've got it flaunt it!'
but without broadband or ADSL, it's a PITA!

your welcome :-D. In my most honest opinion Ibrowse is the best browser on the amiga, 2.3 just built on it :-)

So far I'm pretty impressed with the demo.

Certainly, the refresh rates look better than V3's.
I'd like to see some javascript but the demo doesn't seem
to support it.

So, as far as it goes, it's tempting to spend the dosh.
I'll try it a bit longer, 'cos I also need a new drive rather badly.

Decisions, decisions!

I hoped you liked my choice of buttons, those arent the default set as those suck :-)

With the careful application of "MUI preference stroking," IBrowse can be cleaned up to look fairly nice. :-)

I've killed the button borders, which looks far nicer on this system.  Too bad the IBrowse authors found a way to put images on text(!??!) buttons, so now my fast-link buttons are borderless too...  I'm not even going to mention how horrible the buttons inside a webpage looks...  There's a feature for 2.4, put the images on image-buttons--that's what they are there for!

That's my biggest complaint so far; I guess that isn't much of a complaint in the grand scheme of things.

Don't forget to try out the tabs! They are truly the best thing added to IBrowse in the last couple of versions.
