Title: Amiga Quake II problems
Post by: billchase on January 27, 2005, 05:08:36 PM
I am having trouble running this game.  When the very
first map or demo starts to load, the program freezes.
Switching back to the workbench screen, there is usually
some kind of PowerPC exception error window.  I know the
PPC side works, since I am able to run some other apps.
I do not have hardware accelrated 3D, just using software
rendering.  I am having some issues with file corruption
copy back and forth to ram, so I am experimenting with the
Mask and MaxTransfer setting.  Whether or not this is related
remains to be seen.  I have updated Q2 with the latest patch
from Hyperion.  Any insight greatly appreciated!

Bad ram chip/s, Just a thought.

Try and remove your motherboard RAM.

If that fails, clock down the RAM on the CSPPC to 70 ns.

If that fails, you may suffer from overheating.

No go on removing motherboard ram and downclocking to 70ns.
I doubt it is overheating, I have the case completely open
at the moment.  I will try a different, more intensive PPC,
application to see how it performs.  I will also try to paste
the info from the WarpOS exception window to see if it will
shed any light on the problem.  Stay tuned!

Hello

try to remove "Memory protection" (if enabled) from WOS Prefs also.

@Billchase:

LR problem:
Some PowerPC-CPU's (notably 233 MHz 604) had a problem that the LR register sometimes randomly flips a bit (one of the upper bits) causing a wild jump into some uninitialized area. There is a software fix available that detects this and corrects the problem in software (since no Amiga has RAM that high, an LR with that value is impossible.

On your problem, *do* try to downclock your memory to 70NS, at least for a test, and *do* try to remove your mainboard memory. This may make all the difference, especially with the 70ns, since some RAM modules have difficulties working together at 60ns, even though they're all flagged as 60ns.

@Rogue

Thanks for the reply.  I have already reduced Ram speed to
70ns and removed motherboard memory.  No luck there.  Where
can I find the LR fix?  Again, thanks for the help.

might be too little ram on the gfx card too , try to reduce wb resulution and remove wb backdrops etc

to see if it works then.

might be the thing overheating too ....

so many things :-(

best of luck on getting the game running.

I will try, but shouldn't be a problem, as Quake II is running
in just 320x240 screen.  Since I am using software rendering,
the textures and maps should load to system memory.  Thanks
for the suggestion.  I am going to paste the info from the
error message later tonight.

Ok, here is the error message info. I apologize for not
posting this sooner.  Hopefully you can read this.  If not,
I will upload it in RTF format.

If anyone can interpret these codes, I would certainly be
grateful!

Forgot those damn error codes, I got the thing working!!!!!!
Since had some file corruption errors dealing with the hard
drive on the native scsi bus: I moved everything back to
Cyberstorm SCSI bus, updated the Mask and Maxtransfer settings,
formatted a spare partition, and reinstalled OS3.9 with all
relevent software to the spare partition.  The question now
remains if the Mask and Maxtransfer settings were the
culprit or the native SCSI bus.  Since it is a pain trying
to use a CD-ROM on the cyberstorm scsi with a 3000, I am
going to use an external drive on the native bus while
keeping the hard drive on the cyberstorm.  Hopefully this
combination will prove reliable.

@BillChase

That's exactly the setup I've used successfully to run the game, if it's any help.  My system is a CyberstormPPC @200MHz/60MHz 68060, 18Gb UltraSCSI Seagate Cheetah drive on the Cyberstorm SCSI controller, 2x NEC external CDROM on A3000 SCSI native controller (internal cable passively terminated), 16MB 70ns zips on m/b, 128MB 60ns SIMMs on Cyberstorm, OS3.9, WarpUP5.1, Warp3D4.2, CybervisionPPC, CybergraphX4.

Thanks for the feedback.  What kind of framerates are you
getting?

@BillChase

I estimate it runs only about 25-30 fps in 320x240 mode.  It is playable but slows down some when there are a lot o' enemies, etc.  I think it'd run a lot faster with a Voodoo3 card instead of the Permedia chip on the CybervisionPPC.  GLQuake runs *very* fast on my setup however, even in 640x480 mode.

bah, on my system using warp3d the game sux... you cannot play q2 with that framerate... just run it for the "experience" but don't expect to enjoy it... there is no joy in running quake on 20-25 fps...

I agree, it's no great shakes. Maybe it's better on a Voodoo card though.  I think the 3D aspect of the game is a bit much for the older Permedia chip on my graphics card.
