Title: Need help with 4000 desktop
Post by: Garyed40 on January 24, 2005, 07:56:46 PM
Hi all

I bought a 4000 desktop and it has 20meg ram the 3.0 roms and I installed a 1gig Maxtor hard disk..

everything was fine installed OS 3.1 and even Simcity 2000 but now the system is locking up... No error msg nothing obvious the machine just freezes I reboot and sometimes it freezes at the Rom screen where you see the floppy go into the disk drive. I'm stumped any ideas?

thank you
Gary

1) Is it getting to hot?
2) Try cleaning the contacts on the CPU board since these has become corroded in some Amigas
3) Can you try other CPU boards in it?
4) Is the memory fitted properly in the sockets?

well, I don't know how helpfull this is but it is a start.

What kind of hardware is in your Amiga?

Hi

The memory is fitted properly I haven't cleaned the contacts on the CPU I'll have to do that. There's no hardware installed in any of the card slots. No over heating.

hmm.. you could try running it without the case on and see the that works out. It still could be a heat problem because, it could be a "soon to fail" chip or a soldering witch fails when it gets hot.

If you say it freezes in the "instert disk screen" you could try to press gently on every chip and board in it to see if and when it fails, that would tell you if it's a soldering.

Check the battery for leakage.  The SIMM slots are quite close to the battery so if it leaks the SIMM contacts can get gunked up.  My A4000 wasn't stable until I took some isopropyl to the SIMMS and their slots.

I know there are reports of problems, but I ran 3.1 on my A4000/040/3.0 system for ~3 months with no problems.

I have a similar problem with a 3.0 rom'd A4000.  I suspect a problem with the ide timing. I have a slim-line 2Gb Seagate drive and a 4x ide cd rom.  The cd rom works great but I keep getting random freezes when trying to access the harddrive.  I was thinking the 3.1 roms would have bug fixes to make the internal ide controller more tolerant perhaps.  You might try using it with an original spec'd 120MB Seagate drive (these were the drives the 4000 originally shipped with).

I ran WB3.1 on a KS3.0 system for years without problems.

True, the 3.0 ROMs and WB3.1 aren't perfect match, but you probably won't even notice the difference. Some features are missing, but I don't even remember what any more.. Something to do with CD-ROMs, IIRC.

I know you have had lots of suggestions, but, I thought I would inject my 2 cents. The booting to the screen with the disk animation is sticking in my mind. Have you yanked the cables to the HD and re-seated them? Also, I would try disconnecting the HD and then booting from floppy and playing a few games or something and then see if that problem goes away.

Hope this helps, I have a sneaking suspicion that the hard drive is to blame.

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you all

I checked everything you suggested and it looks like the ROM's are just about shot. Which is why the system locks up I'll be trolling Ebay to find some newer ones

If you don't find any on EBay you can get some here (http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/software/operating_sys/os39.html&cart_id=2108331_3254)!

Thought I would add my 2 øre :-) I got a lot of lockups because I haven't the newest liberarys for my 060. I think the same goes for the 040.
