Title: Epistula
Post by: Robert17 on January 20, 2005, 09:44:45 PM
Hey all, I see there's a pre release of this, has anybody tried it at all? I can't get it to work heh, it crashes when loading plugins, looks good so far though, more pretty than Jabberwocky.

The cons of Epistula with MSN (check point 9, 10, 14 and 15):

1) It doesn't use the latest MSN protocol.

2) It doesn't parse P4-Context: needed for BOT2K3's chat room.

3) It sends the challenge ping response twice. Amazing it even works.

4) Your own smileys are shown as text instead of gfx.

5) The instant message window shows their email address instead of their handle.

6) When you send a message, it only shows ":" instead of your handle.

7) TearOff panel says "Need Name".. It should already know it.

8) The " is typing a message" message does not disappear if they decide
not to finish typing the message.

9) It doesn't support more than 1 person in a conversation.

10) Not only does it not show all the participants of a conversation, but it
simply ignores and doesn't show messages of the other people who are chatting,
it only shows the messages for the person you originally opened the
    conversation for.

11) When "Need Name" goes in the tearoff panel, the name that appears does not have
the CR (carriage return) stripped from the name.

12) It doesn't convert from unicode to ANSI.

13) In the main GUI window, when single-clicking on the nicknames, the last
message at the bottom of the window does not change.

14) You can't close any windows!?

15) After 5 minutes of inactivity in a window, the server closes the connection,
this is normal, but when you send a new message it doesn't restart the
conversation and therefore doesn't get sent.

Now having said this... This is current cons. It isn't a backlash of Epistula as
it is currently in development.. I am just pointing out reasons not to use it yet,
and perhaps the fact I wrote my own MSN client clouds my own judgement ;)

Actually to tell the truth I really was trying to hard to point out every fault
or incomplete thing possible in the current version ;)

Feel free to list the CONs of AmiMSN while your at it! ;)

Epistula has the potential to turn into something great.. but currently.. and this is not biased, I don't recommend using it as it's way too unstable to have even been released.

Now if MickJT's port just looked like Epistula you'd have a killer app!

Maybe a cooperative approach? ;-)

Still trying to think of other bad things about it.. hehe

I was only listing the things that it can do, but doesn't do properly.. Not the things it can't do yet (with the exception of P4-Context, that is a must.. Note to the author: P4-Context headers are not URL encoded).

I'm willing to share my knowledge with Daniel.. The actual arexx code itself however he wouldn't be interested in! :)

Well, thanks for the taking the opportunity (and obviously a lot of your time) to get stuck into an unfinished application. Well plugin.

You see, I wouldn't really mind this post as it points out a lot of things (which I already know about) which are broken and/or not working correctly.

What I do mind though, is the way you've written all of those snide remarks at the end. Also, posting your comments on a public forum as a means to say "Mines, better than yours 'cause yours doesn't do this, and that, and that doesn't work like it should". That's how it comes across to me.

Would it not have been better to simply put down here; "Yes, Epistula has a few problems with the MSN plugin, I've contacted the author about them, in the mean time I'd recommend using AmiMSN until they're fixed"?

Fair enough, if it was finished, then yeah, I would think it would deserve a post like this. But as I'm currently using the MSN plugin along with the ICQ plugin to test the functionality of the client communicating with various plugins and their protocols, it seems a little OTT.

Which pretty much makes this post, and all of your 'points' rather moot doesn't it?

I'll be the judge of that thankyou. It's stable on my machine, so why not let other people have a look so we can have helpful people like yourself pointing out what's wrong with one plugin.

Hi Daniel... I was expecting a post from you like this :)

So lets clear some things up..

> Well, thanks for the taking the opportunity (and obviously a lot of your time) to get stuck into an unfinished application. Well plugin.

Actually I didn't spend much time at all, around about 15 minutes.

> You see, I wouldn't really mind this post as it points out a lot of things (which I already know about) which are broken and/or not working correctly.

I realised you would have already knows most of these things.. Below I point out the whole point of my post.

> Also, posting your comments on a public forum as a means to say "Mines, better than yours 'cause yours doesn't do this, and that, and that doesn't work like it should". That's how it comes across to me.

Ok... The "snide" remarks at the end were there to let everyone know I was trying to "rub it in", if you know what I mean.. It was the early hours of the morning and I thought hey, why not list all the bad things about Epistula? It was a post of, lets say, uh, truthful jokes, designed to offend you. Which is the reason I welcomed people to make complaints about AmiMSN :)

> Would it not have been better to simply put down here; "Yes, Epistula has a few problems with the MSN plugin, I've contacted the author about them, in the mean time I'd recommend using AmiMSN until they're fixed"?

Yes that would have been more appropriate and polite, but I was attempting to offend out of boredom ;)

So please accept my apology and I welcome the biggest backlash I can get :)
