Post by: Linchpin on January 20, 2005, 02:07:29 PM
I know this isnt amiga but ... If any of you have a PS2 that will read CD's / PS1 games but not DVD's / PS2 games let me know! I just spent 4 hours fixing this PS2 and fault finding, so if anyone wants to know how to do it,,,,, :-D

ps.. Its not that hard!

is it modded? if yes, then the laser is dying, this is the 1st syndrome as DVD's need more power/efficiency to be read... if it is not modded, then get it back for a replacement...

I've got a PSX (not the new PSOne, but an old PSX Mark II) that can't read some PS1 games that work in other PS1/2's...

I haven't tried it, but this (http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_laser_adjustment_scope.shtml) guide sounds and looks very reasonable.

Vince - Try it upside-down. If it works - Worn laser sled path. Easy to fix with a floppy disk (old trick :-)

My Ps2 isnt modded (yet).

Its Years old.

Can you hear like "tick tick tick" coming from the laser (ie the lens hitting the bottom of its tray trying to focus.

The CD32 fitted with an SX32 has similar problems............the CD laser just dies during operation and causes a reboot!  Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gets me SUPER upset!

Could be the same problem - Worn sled track.

Nope, it does make a noise, but it's definitely not that noise.

It's more of a grinding noise.  The lens goes all the way to the outside of the CD and tries to keep going for about 10 seconds before giving up, returning to the center and stopping the CD.

@LinchpiN

Actually for the CD32/SX32 it seems to be a Power problem.the SX32 seems to have Awful power distibution. I know this because my CD32/SX32 used to work fine with the original CD32 PSU.even fully loaded with Printer and Floppy and all............then I bought a Bigfoot 300W PSU and the CDROM doesnt seem to still get enough power.....because the SX32 is still sucking it improperly

Every CD32/SX32 combo I have tried does this

That's the very noise my old (4 years) DVD-Drive makes... and it takes ages to recognise disks now... and sometime just stops reading them... What did you do how can I fix it?

Have you tried reading cd versions of a ps2 game? and what about dvd movies? might be the laser that just is saying goodnight :(

This is what i hate about sony consoles... The lifespan of them is just horrible.. i had 3 ps1 that ended up having troubles reading discs and my ps2 is starting to have trouble reading the discs aswell. When i buy a console, then i expect it to live for years.. my a500 still works to this day.

Wow! Lots of questions!

Ok, bloodline. 1st, clean the lens. If that doesnt work.. try running it upsidedown to the laser is hanging above the disk. But if you break it, not my fault :-D

If that works, its something to do with a worn laser mount / sled track.

Jump into the a.org chatroom, can answer easier in there.

I've been lucky with mine. Had it since 2001 and no problems. I think mine is a revision 4. I only got mine modded because I wanted to play NTSC games too. Twisted Metal Black NTSC version is not censored like the PAL version. IIRC the mod chip also kills the green screen and the region lock.

Playing backup's kills the lens's calibration cos the focal length is different.

Is there a difference between playing PAL and NTSC originals? (I haven't got any backups)
