Title: Help! Can't get my new external CD drive to work
Post by: ckillerh3 on January 14, 2005, 03:22:19 AM
Hi -

I have an A1200 Running Version 3.1 Workbench. My machine has a GVP A1230 with 1291 SCSI card.  To get into the 1990s I purchased an external SCSI CD drive.

I used the DOSDrivers to set-up a CD0 mountlist icon and using Information set it to ID#2 and all that jaz.

I've got it connected and using GVPmountSCSI tools can find the drive OK. It says, however, Invalid Rigid Disk Block and won't let me mount the drive.  Same problem if i put a DOS formatted ZIP disk onto my ZIP drive.

Any EZ solutions for my problem?  If I can get this working OK I can take files from my PC and transfer them easy to my Amiga by burning a CD.

Thanks !

Do you have the GVPSCSI.device driver inside your sys:expansion drawer?  This is where the a1291 scsi card expects to find the OS driver, you can download the lastest GVPscsi device driver Ver 5.3 from http://www.gvp-m.com/updatejapan.html

Rigid disk blocks are usually only for AmigaOS preped harddrives, you should not need one for your CD drive if the software has been correctly installed. Which cd-rom device driver are you using? Cache-CDFS, Ami-cdfs etc

Sorry, cant help you very much with the ZIP in PC format, I have never used that feature within AmigaOS, I beleive tho that some people have used trackdisk.device to mount the ZIP as a huge floppy drive.

1) Not sure about the GVPSCSI device driver.  I can download the latest one as you suggest but do not know if that will fix the problem.

2) Not sure what CD-ROM device driver.  What is Cache-CDFS, Ami-cdfs?  I have no idea what you mean by this.  I guess I'm an Amiga retard.

All I did was connect the drive to the SCSI port, drag the CD0 Icon into the DOSDrivers drawer, and make sure the tool types was set to the correct SCSI ID.

At this point I am at a loss what to do.  I think that the machine is headed for EBay in the next few days if I can not sort this out.

If you are running AOS3.1 I'd suggest that you get ASIM CD Filesystem. It's easy to set up and works well with the GVP controllers.
