Title: My final attempt at using a zip drive on my amiga..
Post by: Gav on January 07, 2005, 02:23:28 PM
Hi there
Ok after a long time of trying to get my amiga to wrok with my iomega zip 100 i have decided to make sure i have it all correct before i call it a day.
Its plugged in to my powerflyer secondary port and is the only deivce connected to it so it should be unit 2 in my zip dos driver.I have it named as trackdisk.device as thats what it says to do on the power flyer software disk.
The drive i am using i want amiga formatted only so i dont need any info on how to get it pc format whatever because thats not what i want to use it for.
So i have my zip icon in the dos drivers folder and seems to be set correct? but i dont see any icon of a zip disk on my screen.
Once by mistake it was configured as a hard drive through HD toolbox but i erased it so there should be no problem there.Im all out of ideas so if anyone else has anything help for me before i give up on it id really be thankful to hear,thanks.
Gav

You know when you used HDToolbox; did you remove the partition on the disk? If so, I think you may need to put it back cos it might cause problems. I can't help you fully as I haven't tried to use my Zip Drive with my Amiga, but I have recently removed the partition (By accident), like you are implying you did, from the disk and I couldn't do anything (Mount, format, etc) with it until I repartitioned it ( Edit: This is in Windows2000 though  :oops: ) .

Hope this helps at all

It really says that? It's just that this sounds very wrong.

How did you obtain the numbers to use in the mountlist? Are you sure the numbers are correct?

Yeah thats what it says in the powerflyer readme file,it tells you about what it should be named for medai such as hard drives and cd roms and then for zip and ls120 etc.
in atapi prefs it tells me my zip driev is secondary master so someone told me it will be unit 2.
Thanks

Its crazy how many diffrent ways im hearing that a zip drive should work with an amiga.I have heard ppl tell me its wrong to have it set like a hard drive since you can only remove the disk when you switch teh machine off since it is like a hard drive.Then ppl are telling me you are supposed to have it set like a hard drive,hmm what to do....

Is it internal or external drive? (Sounds like a silly question, but it is quicker than asking two longer questions)

In my experience, when using an internal ide ZIP drive you had to set it up using Hdtoolbox, even if it was later to be removed and another drive inserted, all you needed to do was 'mount' the new drive into the system (make sure all your ZIP disks have been pre-preped using Hdtoolbox)

I used the IDEFix97 software tho, which allowed for the ZIP drive to be swapped with little problems regarding AmigaOS getting confused.

Hello Gav,

There are several things you need to check.

First, make sure any IDE software not provided with the PowerFlyer is deleted. This includes programs like IDEfix, EIDE.device, etc.

Check that the Zip drive has its jumper configured correctly for Master (MA or M). I guess it has since ATA3Prefs sees it OK. (ATAPIPrefs??)

Check that the Zip0 icon (in Devs:DOSdrivers) has the correct ToolTypes (Workbench Icon/Information menu) as follows:

DEVICE=trackdisk.device
UNIT=2
ACTIVATE=1
DONOTWAIT

This is the correct unit number for the Secondary channel Master device. If you move the Zip to another position on the PF interface, you must change the number to suite. Info is in the PF manual, but here they are:

Primary Channel Master   unit=0
Primary Channel Slave    unit=1
Secondary Channel Master unit=2
Secondary Channel Slave  unit=3

(If you ever fit a hard drive on the same channel as a Zip, it will only operate at the data rate of the Zip...slow! The speed is indicated by the PIO setting in the ATA3Prefs gui).

Check if you have a MountList associated with the Zip0 icon.
The PF manual says all ATAPI devices should have a MountList, but then it says that Amiga formatted Zips don't need one. PC formatted Zips certainly need a new MountList. MountLists are text files associated with the device icon.

I use one with my Zip to be on the safe side. You'll find it by running a word processor or a text editor and loading 'Devs:DOSdrivers/Zip0', the path/name of the Zip icon. If there is a MountList it will appear as a text file.

There are numerous MountLists available for Zip drives. They usually come with the icon. If you don't have a MountList, it may not matter, but the following is what I use:

**Enables FastFileSystem on 100Mb Zip cartidges**

Flags=0
Surfaces=2
BlocksPerTrack=64
SectorSize=512
Mask=0x7ffffffe   **That's six-f's**
MaxTransfer=0x100000  **That's five-0's**
Reserved=2
Interleave=0
LowCyl=0
HiCyl=1535
Buffers=50
BufMemType=0
StackSize=600
Priority=10
GlobVec=-1 **That's minus one**
DosType=0x444f5301

**End of MountList**

If you need it, copy this and save it as a text file (Devs:DOSdrivers/Zip0). The most important thing with Amiga formatted Zips are the icon ToolTypes given above.

I was surprised to read that you initially formatted the Zip as a hard drive. Using the PowerFlyer interface, HDToolbox shouldn't list a Zip drive cos it's not a hard drive. That also means that Zips don't work like HDs with PF. You can insert and eject Zip disks just like floppies and their icons should pop on and off the WB screen like floppies. Anyway, let's know how you get on.

Cheers,

JaX

PS: For some reason, my PF uses DF6: as the default icon for my Zip Disks (unless the disk has its own Zip icon). Haven't got around to fixing that. I'm running OS3.9/BB1/BB2

Hi again everyone
Well im just wanting to know what everyone thinks about this because i dont understand it at all.
Everything is done correct in the icon info on my zip dos driver and is as follows.

DEVICE=trackdisk.device
Unit=2
ACTIVATE=1
DONOTWAIT

So then with those settings i get nothing from the zip drive at all but when i re name it to scsi.device i get an icon.
So i downloaded a zip drive program from aminet which also reads it when it is Scsi.device but once again i get nothing with trackdisk.The problem with scsi is it wont allow me to swap disks over which of course isnt what im wanting.
So what do you ppl think about it?Has anyone else had the same problem?
Thanks

I have 2 zip ide drives hooked up on 2 amiga4000.
Both are installed with amigaos 3.9.
One on a ide-fix adapter and one on the internal ide port.
Only way I got to work them reliable is with idefix.
The mountlist entry and hdtoolbox may work but just for once.
Once you move in un other disk it's trouble.
Idefix is slow(400KB/s) but works always and that is better then not working at all or crashes etc...
First install idefix and then do a formatls120 it works!!!

 You`ve got the wrong unit number..
trackdisk units 0-3 are for amiga floppy drives ONLY
 The Elbox software patches trackdisk from unit 4 onwards.

 Primary master =4, primary slave=5
 Secondary master=6, secondary slave=7

Dude, it's a goddamn Zip drive.  Throw it in the trash and buy a cheap CD-burner.

Haha yeah thats a good one but doesnt really help me much here and second of all i do have a cd burner which doesnt seem to work with cd on fire and i aint got £50 right now for make cd.
Nah that isnt true about the id numer considering my cd drive is unit 1 anyways...
Oh well nevermind lol not even elbox`s own manual works,wow.....

But anyways just for the hell of it i did change the id number to 6 and yeah it doesnt work.So anyways i guess its time to quit with the stupid thing,thats the only problem with amiga os everything is such a puzzle to even configure even when you do follow the useless manual.

Really? you`d better tell Elbox that their docs are wrong then .
Remember, when using the trackdisk emulation, the unit numbers are different from those used in a scsi.device mountlist.

BTW, you did set the prefs to enable the Trackdisk patch for ATAPI devices ??
