Hi!
When I try to delete some files, I get message
like:
hd3 has a checksum error in block 253392.
and I can't delete files
I have three months old 40 GB HD Western Digital,
and I'm useing SFS but with FFS gives same error
What is checksum error? Can I repair that somehow,
or is it bad disk?
Thanks!

The computer will do a self test of the data on the HD. IF there is an error ,or certain figures don`t match, then it will tell you.
USE DISK SALVE
OR Quarter-back tools to fix.
Not really a problem....it good to de-fragment the drive as well...
BTW for chips go here....http://jambo.abime.net/info.php?key=1 (http://jambo.abime.net/info.php?key=1)

Some disk media software:
http://www.amigarealm.com/amiga/amitools/tools4.htm (http://www.amigarealm.com/amiga/amitools/tools4.htm)
I have the QuarterBack Tools too, which I can upload, if required.

You need to use caution if you're going to use either of those programs. They haven't seen development since FFS was updated. (They won't work well with anything over 4Gb in size, and they'll likely fail on partitions over 2Gb in size.)
Doesn't SFS come with anything for this? I know it comes with a defrag util.

Disksalv rocks - its the best program of its kind for any platform! Its never let me down yet (famous last words!) :-)

No, stupid words. Very stupid. DiskSalv is one of the programs that does not work with harddisks larger than 4GB. And it does not work for SFS either. AFAIK there is a SFSsalv program in the SFS archive on Aminet. And for FFS there is DiskMonTools.

I don`t think so. For me it works very well, but then I`m using a harddisk less than 4GB and original FFS.
Just because it works for me, doesn`t mean what I am saying is stupid.

I don't know if linux supports the new Amiga file systems, but if it does you could always put the disk in a linux box and use linux disk utils on it. This should really be a last resort. It might work. It might ruin your disk. Don't blame me. :-)
Doesn't OS3.9 come with some kind of disk repair utility? Seems kinda odd to develop an extension of FFS and not supply the proper tools for it...

In my opinion FFS stinks for anything other
than old/unexpanded systems and small drives.
PFS is way better. I'd hate to imagine
repairing errors with FFS on a big drive,
especially since HD Toolbox is kind of a
crapshot with big drives.
Depending on your setup, my advice would be to
think about eventually using PFS.

I agree ! Disksalv will fix the Problem
And try to use a small Bootpartition...

I wonder if Dave is reading this. He could answer the question definitively. As far as I know, Disksalv has never been updated since before the filesystems were created for handling drives larger than 4GB on the Amiga. It therefore knows nothing about them. If you use it for a 40GB drive, as the original poster stated, you are taking the life of your data in your hands. I use Disksalv all the time for Amiga drive problems, but its largest drive is only 2GB. It was made for those drives, not for the large ones of today.
By the way, those of you who do have such huge drives, how do you make permanent backups of them? I would think that at those sizes, even a CD-R would be less than practical. I don't relish the idea of burning 40+ CDs to do one backup of one drive.

DiskSalv 2 is one of the most essential and best utilities ever, but like someone said here it does not support hard disk partitions larger than 4Gb which is a bad thing really.
I have never used Quarterback Tools myself but this sounds like a similar program and it might be worth you trying to get hold of it. If it is half as good as DiskSalv then it should be fine and do the job nicely. :-D

@Everybody:
Please, stop recommending DiskSalv. Depending on where this error is located on his drive, there's a good chance he'll wind up losing data.
Here's an article on going beyond 4Gb. (http://www.youngmonkey.ca/nose/articles/NewTekniques_9810/AmigaInMotion.html)
@Billsey:
While I've never made a backup before, I do have a 40Gb drive that connects to my USB card that I can use if I need to.

Disksalv is OK under 4GB; the only tool for over 4GB is DiskMonTools. But the only real solution is a backup drive, for years I have had at least one backup on a dedicated drive. Maybe DiskMonTools is OK, the only time I tried it it was so slow that I couldn't bear. With my speedy UWSCSI drives I can copy from my backups much faster than recover a busted drive. Just need to keep the backups fresh...

The safest way to backup a large hard drive is to back it up to another large hard drive (which is what I do here). Backing up 40GB onto many CD-R's can work, but because of the nature of CD Burning you may get a CD that didn't burn properly or even damage a CD-R afterwards. Can be rare. There is one question though. Would you risk your data?

Disksalv is not ok for SFS partitions. There are no fix in place
solutions for SFS. SFSSalv can get files off a damaged partition.
The only way to fix a SFS partition is to reformat it using SFSFormat.
SFS is Beta softwaare, but I use it all the time. FFS scks bad. For
DiskMonTools try giving thee drive more buffers (2000) it might sped
it up.

using SFS but with FFS gives the same error

??? how aare you setting this up, to use FFS or SFS you need to
reformat the partition, this should have got rid of the error!
SFS must be used with it's SFSFormat.
FFS must be used with the workbench format command.

You are right there, all disk utilities that are made before WB3.5
(Disksalv, reorg, QBTools etc, will not work on drives larger than
4Gb, and AFAIR on partitions over 2Gb.
NOTE WELL if they are used: Data will be lost!
