Hi -
I'm trying to upgrade my A1200 for internet use.
It looks like upgrading the OS is a good idea to
the new OS 3.9. I imagine I need to do the following
but have a few questions.
1) With OS 3.9 do I need to buy Miami DX and I-Browse?
2) How to best add a CD-ROM to an A-1200?
My system has a GVP 1230+ board with 4 meg RAM. It also has the GVP 1291 SCSI adapter with external DB25 adapter SCSI 1. I've got an external SCSI drive hooked-up allready.
Can I just buy a CD-ROM from E-bay and loop it in? Do I need any special CD-Rom drivers to operate the drive? Is there special software like Nero (for PC) to actually burn disks?
Thanks for any help?

OS 3.9 has an Internet browser built in.

I added an external SCSI drive. I believe a 1200 can also use an IDE drive, with the right hardware.

SCSI devices can be daisy-chained, but you have to make sure they have different device IDs, and that the last device has a terminator, to signal the end of the chain. Any (older) SCSI CD will do, eBay is where I purchased my own. Actually OS 3.9 comes with its own CDFS, but, you can't access it until you install the OS! I suggest you download and install AmiCDFS, which is free. Jot down the instructions, since the installation procedure is not automatic, and calls for copying files into various locations, and making other settings 'by hand'. And, when you finally get the drive up and running, AND you install OS 3.9, don't choose to install CacheCDFS from the OS 3.9 disk, or you'll have two CD file systems going, and it'll just confuse things! (You'll have 2 icons each of every feature from your OS 3.9 disk, one generated by AmiCDFS, and the other by CacheCDFS.)
Thanks for any help?

umm, OS3.9 requires 6 MB fastRAM. :)
No need to buy Miami DX since Genesis is included on the CD.

I wouldnt try running OS 3.9 on 14MHz either, get an 030

@Hopper
He has an 030 (GVP1230+). But, as mentioned you need more Fast RAM. Amiga Inc. says 6M is the minimum, but the more the better.
You can also download AmiTCP demo from Aminet, as well as AWeb and IBrowse demos and have internet access on your Workbench 3.0/3.1 system. Just be aware that web browsing is not one of the Amigas strong suits.

The latest experimental binaries for the full freeware version of AWeb is here (http://aweb.sunsite.dk/files/builds/aweb3.5.04b68k_20041216.lha).
AmigaOS 3.9 comes with CD-ROM drivers but not for writing CDs. To write CDs you'll need a program like BurnIt or FryingPan.

Hi -
Well, I guess I will do the following:
1) Purchase some more GVP RAM from Software Hut
2) Purchase OS 3.9 and ROMS from the same place
3) Get a SCSI CD from E-Bay
I've got a 6 Gig HD that I'll put into the A1200
and format it fresh.
Any other tips or suggestions?

I would get a 040 or 060 with 16MB Fast Ram minimum. A 030 is slow with OS3.9, especially if you want to surf the net!

I have 040/33MHz+64Mb and I not have speek on speedy inet.
