Title: Stop Motion Video, what Hardware and program to use?
Post by: AmiXDel on December 31, 2004, 12:19:41 AM
I would like to do some DIY Stop Motion video and was considering using a Digi-Cam and a PC, but then thought that it might be more interesting to do this on the Amiga instead.

What is the best affordable solution for this? I don't necessarily need more than 256 Colors.

A Vlab card would work great for capturing single frames, but a Personal Animation Recorder would be the best as you can playback the results without having to render an animation file. The image files can then be altered in another graphics program or titles overlayed/rendered to the frames.

I used my sons HotWheel cars to make an opening scene for a video segment on local traffic.

A used PAR card can be had for around a hundred dollars US and then up to an 8 gig ide hd can be installed.  Well, finding compatible hds is another story, but not difficult to obtain.

Would need a zorro slot for either device.

Well, there is the external Vlab that hooks into the parallel port.   Even a DCTV might work capturing single frames.

@ AmiXDel

What digicam have you got?
What is the output of the video going to be (file, video tape, or DVD)?

A Dv camera,  Coz they have perfect freeze whilst playing back and can move forward one frame at a time.  Timed stop motion recording is even possible on a lot of DV cams.  Your'll have to read your manual to see if yours is capable.

Capturing ..

VidiAmiga 24 RT.

Once your captured all the frames you need and altered them how you want ..

You could pull the pix into True Brilliance and make up and anim in that ..

or use Scalas AnimLab.

Cecilia would know if you can build anims in Ifx as I suspect you could automate that process in there.

I was considering using a DV Cam...

...one of those ones capable of capututing up to a minute of full motion video and what not. I wanted to capture the images at 800x600, and save them in 16-bit color.

Of course since I don't have USB support on the Amiga, I'll need to plug the camera into a RCA jack and capture the images that way.

Or I could use my old 80's camcorder, which is prefered?

@AmiXDel

I do this all the time, and was just doing it today as well.

I have a DV camera that I record Footage with at for the highest quality capture (I recommend it)

then I transfer the footage viz FireWire to the PC. I import it into Quicktime Pro and convert it into JPEG frames and burn it to CD and transfer it to My Amiga....Whalla! its that easy.

then I import the JPG frames into Image Studio 2.3 or PPaint 6.6 and batch convert them to IFF in either 16 colors with FLoyd Steinberg Dithering (looks great) or 128 colors.  Then using SCALA MM300 I compile into an anim5 or anim32 (for superfast playback from SCALA)

Its sounds like a long process, but its quite simple really and effective. an 040 is recommended for faster conversion from jpg to iff.

I also have a VLab Parallel port version which I may use occasionally.

I've heard that JPG looses a lot of quality.

Depends on how high the compression setting is !!
