Title: AMIGA 600 " RESET LOOP ON BOOT " CUSTOM CHIP CPU RAM ?
Post by: slater79 on December 30, 2004, 11:31:07 AM
Hello, i've bought an A600 REV1.3 motherboard that is out of order.

To test it, i've put my KICKSTART 1.3+3.1 from my REV1.5, reset loop with the 2 kicks.
So, to see steps colors, i choose KICK 1.3 :
DARK GREY
LIGHT GREY
WHITE
But, the KICKSTART screen doesn't appear after white screen, there is a trouble.
I've also try to apply reset with Keyboard, that's work and i can press a while on keys CTRL+Al+Ar without reset, i can see one flash of Caps Lock LED on reset.
I've learn an article where :

Here is a list of the startup-routine activities:

1. Clear all of the chips of old data.
2. Disable DMA and interrupts during the test.
3. Clear the screen.
4. Check the Hardware (make sure the 680x0 is working)
5. Change the screen color to show whether this test was passed
6. Do a checksum test on all the ROMS
7. Change screen color to show if ROMS passed the test
8. Begin the system startup
9. Check the Ram at $C0000, and move SYS_BASE there
10. Test all of the chip RAM
11. Change the screen color to show if the RAM passed the test
12. Check to see if software is coming in OK
13. Change the screen color to show if the software test is passed.
14. Set up the chip ram to receive data.
15. Link the libraries.
16. Check for additional memory and link it in if found
17. Turn the DMA and Interrupts back on.
18. Start a default task.
19. Check to see if the computer is using a 68010, 68020, and/or 68881.
20. Check to see if there is an Exception (processor error)
21. If so, do a system reset.

AND THE MESSAGES ARE IN TECHNICOLOR!

As this routine is taking place, the Amiga is sending you
messages with the screen colors. If all is well, we usually see this sequence:

Dark gray The initial hardware tested OK. The 68000 is
running and the registers are readable
Light gray The software is coming in and seems OK
White The initialization tests were all passed

But if something is wrong with your Amiga, you might see:

Red If there is an error in ROM
Green If there is an error in the Chip RAM
Blue If an error was found in the custom chips
Yellow If the 68000 found an error before the error trapping software (the guru) was up and running

If i understand, there is a 68000 exception, what's the real problem?
I've Amiga spares, i can replace but i want to do it correctly.
Then, if anybody have an idea, that's a good new :)

I Picked up a spare part 600 a while ago missing it's Kickstart. I plugged in a 1.3 from a working A500, that did not work at all. Maybe that's the case with yours. I plugged in a 2.05+ and it worked fine.
As far as 3.1 goes, have you waited long enough? 3.1 takes a really long time lokking for a HD if you don't have one.

Hello, that's right, KICK 3.1 take a while to boot.
But, my problem is that KICKSTART 1.3 or 3.1 doesn't appear because of RESET before.
KICKSTART 1.3 work perfectly on my 1.5, your problem may be a KICKSTART swticher that use GND for /CE:

There is a strange failure on my motherboard, but what?
I can disconnect RST on Gayle but i'm not sure that's can help me.

I'll try to find but it's difficult in this case, where no colors tell me if a CUSTOM CHIP 68000 RAM is out :(
