Title: A.Org awards
Post by: blobrana on December 20, 2004, 06:06:54 PM
@moderators and viewers,
Hum,
After reading PMC`s touching Christmas speech, I was wondering if A.Org is going to have any award ceremonies? (Virtual awards of course - nothing `official`/or requiring work).

Like for most posts, best avatar, most impassive picture upload, scariest post etc…
Any other ideas…?
or nominations?

OK. Let's see. I would nominate:

Glaucus - for Political Prowess
Karlos - for Chemical Conquests
Cymric - for Quantum Quarkiness
Blobrana - for being Simply Celestial
Fluffy - for his avatar. (I always did like rabbit ... uh, rabbits :-D)
Wilse - for his Cutting-edge Commentary
PMC - for his Historical Hints
Tigger - for his Conservative Contrast
KennyR - for his Scientific Sidelights

ah, yes

X-Ray - for his Medical Missives

Cecilia:
for being hot-headed and short of words (but not short of meaning),
and being an artist

Punkie:
for being a real sweetie

Wilse, Glaucus & Karlos:
for reminding me a gazillion times again why I am a leftist, and giving me a gazillion arguments (apart from my core beliefs/thoughts)

T-Bone & X-Ray:
for really challenging those arguments,

Whabang, PMC, Cyberus, Odin & Bloodline:
for being a sweetie, and always in for an easy chitchat :pint:

Blobrana:
for her subtle humour and eccentric way of, well, dealing with everything

BJJones:
for his wisdom and his (different, well, different than mine) approach of life

Yikes!

In no particular order:
Piru - For always having a say in technical debates.
Speel - Every community should have one!
BJ, Red, and T-bone - For giving evil capitalism a nice form.
Dan - For helping me turning every thread to be about Swedish local affairs.
Cecilia and Blobrana - For always remining us about the fact that men are boys with more expensive toys.
Odin and Cyberus - For being language fascists.
PMC and Adz - For helping me keeping the Friday-threads alive.
Karlos and Wilse - For the groaners.

and finally...

Bloodline - For the sock!

My nominations:

Most posts?

It's a flip between Whabang and Blobrana.  Hell, let's just award something to the pair of you...  You've both made me laugh my socks off and have been an education too.

Best Avatar?

Karlos.  The anvil/poster/sock one still has me chuckling.  Blob's Spitfire avatar was good.

Most impressive picture?

X-ray and his gatling gun.  I want one of those bolted to the front of my car, together with a gunsight on the dashboard...

Scariest Post?

Hmm, there's many.  I think Bloodline's frank admission about his sox life was quite scary, although Blob's contribution to my "Confidence" thread was a prophecy that thankfully did not come to pass.  The political ones are usually scary in some form or another but for slightly more serious reasons.

Best biking related avatar?

Me.

Hehe!  I think it's rather cool.  I saw one in the bike shop and had to have a pair fitted to my new MTB.  They're made of machined alloy and have little fluid reservoirs mounted next to the brake levers...

Nope am by no means rich!

I do cover a fair distance, but when you're hurtling down the side of a mountain and the terrain is wet / gritty then rim brakes tend to be completely ineffective in comparison.

If you do not mind my asking, what kind of bike do you have?  I grew up with Schwinns and I loved them.  I do not currently have a bike but have been considering getting a good mountain bike.  Can you make any suggestions?

Hehe, of course not!

I've a 2004 Specialized Enduro, which is a much better bike than I'll ever be a rider.  The Enduro features 5 inches of suspension travel at either end, four pot hydraulic disk brakes, 27 gears and is made out of aluminium.

As for a good MTB, you can't go wrong with Specialized.  The Hardrock is entry level and although it's rather brutal is an excellent bike.  The Rockhopper is next up and is a much more comfortable machine.

Just give the award to X-ray.
He is this site's young and rising star.
In a short period of time since he joined us, he managed to turn quite a few heads towards his direction, and the post count reflects that.

I don't think that it would be fair for some old and boring poster to snatch the award away, yet again. :-)

Just the one but it was a cracker.

I have my usual favourites (I won't name you lot because I'll no doubt miss someone out) but this year I've really noticed these guys who I hadn't seen that much of before, if at all:

Blobrana - hum... what a mind and from my part of the world too. And pretty. :-D
Bjjones - Possibly the most open-minded, right-wing, Christian, republican person I've ever had the pleasure of talking to.
Eyso - Off the wall and always makes me smile.
X-Ray - Groaners and a good balancing force in any fire-arms debate. And he does the same job as me burd.

And of course, the one, the only, WAYNE HUNT, without whom none of this would be possible.

And cheers to everyone else for keeping the site so diverse.

You know, if we did implement some award system, you could have equivalent awards for people in different rank ranges.

That way there's no post count advantage. You wouldn't want as many divisions as there are ranks - maybe gather all the folks with 1-499 posts into one group, all the people from 500-999 in another, then 1000-1999, then 2000-3999, then 4000+

You'd then have exactly the same sort of awards for each category.

Or am I taking this a might too serious? :-D

You could still have special awards for various things applicable to all of the users, such as "best disinherited demi geordie by the handle karlos" and so on :-D

Even "load bearing" would be appropriate on at least 2 levels... (after all, the sock certianly bears a few of bloodlines loads, does it not?)

@ Sumner

According to the patent office and the UK copyright laws, you have 10 days to challenge someone if they have put a serviceable idea in the public domain. Now let's see...Blobzie posted it on the 20th of December and you have done your "Johnny-come-lately-and-indignantly" stunt on the 1st of January.
Sorry, pal, but that is more than 10 days, so just pipe down and let Blobzie handle the awards.
I mean you can't really try to hijack an idea that Blobzie had last year already, can you?

@X-Ray

Erm, I came up with this in January/February 2004, but got told off for trolling for suggesting the idea.

And it's SUMNER7 to you if you can't read.

Hope you got my e-mail ok, and I hope you like my raps.

January 2004, you say?
Aw, man, you unlucky fellow. According to my sources, if you leave the idea in the public domain for a year, it is considered spent, and a new proposal can be made.

Sorry, man. It seems your timing is a bit off. But on behalf of all the users here, let me give you an award...

I hereby give Sumner the award for "Belated Appeal of the day".

Don't worry, there's always 2006. But for now, this thread is Blobzie's idea.

Wayne, I know you are Webmaster, but you do remember me creating the amiga.org awards thread last January, don't you??? In fact, I think you deleted it.

And anyway, you can talk. JonoPike showed me the p-mail you sent him and you were far from chilled out. Take a break, man.
