Complete shopping list (excluding cables):

AOne XE-G4 800MHz, (AOS4 included - EarlyBird)
256MB RAM,
CD-RW, (have already)
ATI Radeon9000
Infinitiv keyboard
Sony Trinitron 21" (have already)
Soundblaster Live!
~40 - 80 GB HD
ATX tower (have already)
ATX 350W
switch 4PC <--> 1 monitor (AOne, A4000 & Linux PC)
switch 4PC <--> 1 printer   (  --- " ----)
floppy drive

is weighting in at around 12000 SEK (is that about $1200?),
not counting the stuff I already own, in which case it's
around 16000 ($1600).

I won't start buying the extra stuff before AOS4 + AOne are
in my hands though.

Well, by the way it appears...

Everything should be ready by mid year.
AmigaOne and OS4 should be a complete base package by then, and on the shelves.

Can't wait to see it.

Can't wait to hear from some of these beta tester after thier oath of silence has expired.

heh...

Does anyone sell a 1/2 meter by 1/2 meter panel, with just lights, that can connect to your serial port and be controled by your computer, or set on random, and basically give you that "Star Trek" from the '60s look?

How 'bout them sounds (hehe)?

Amiga! Everything old is new again!

They do CCDs on USB now do they ? cool !

any software for the miggy to connect to one ?

go on them tonyw, whats your setup ?

I have a 3" Schmidt-Newtonian reflector (alt-az mount :-( ) from Broadhurst Clarkson and Fuller, which I hardly use these days - y'know - work, kids, no garden to speak of - living in the middle of the west midlands ...
did some great astronomy on it when I was younger though - orions' belt, Jupiter (saw the Galileans and some equatorial bands) the close approach of mars in '89 ... ahh great days...

Ahem. yes. back on topic after a nostalgia break -

I am getting an A1-XE with G4/800 CPU card
512MB RAM
Z4-Tower to ATX conversion kit
Radeon 7000VE
and an Amiga engraved 5.25" faceplate  :-D
to go with the 20GB hard disk, CDRom and tower I have already.

might be nice to use this to get back into some Astro, eh !

Astronomy and Amigas now your talking.

I did a degree in Astrophysics and still used my Amiga for image processing of star fields and stuff, much better results than Gimp or Photoshop.

I recon I've priced up a good little AOne-SE system for about £600.  No Monitor but I'll salvage that one from my 'miggy.  Parts mainly from adverts in Micromart

Radeon VE 32Mb
60Gb Segate H/D
A Decent Blue and Cream ATX Case
Silent PSU
DVD ROM Drive
Very Cheap Blue K/B, Mouse and Speakers
(prob. get a better set later, but blue to match the Case!)
256Mb SDRAM
AONE-SE
errm that it I think!

and O/S 4.0 +£50?

OK might go for the AONE-XE, depending on funds, but I'm going for a quite system.

Anyway won't buy nought till O/S 4 is out.

Hay that sounds like a catch phrase!  :-)

Since the EUR currency has not shown up yet, here's my little contribution:

 - board A1 G4/800-XE: 918 EUR
 - CPU cooler fan (copper): 10 EUR
 - RAM 256 Mb ECC registered: 58 EUR (a bit pricey, IMO)
 - HD Maxtor 60 Gb + FD 1.4 Mb: 119 EUR
 - gfx card ATi Radeon 9000: 90 EUR
 - mid tower: 50 EUR
 - DVD-R Artec 16x: 49 EUR
 - CD-RW Samsung 40x12x40x: 63 EUR
 - keyboard + mouse: 7 EUR
 - monitor Acer 17": 149 EUR

I think I forgot nothing.
The total is... well, gimme some time... should be around 1513 EUR.
Please note that, apart from the board and the RAM, I bought everything in December, so now this system could be cheaper  - or more powerful for the same amount of money.

Hope this helps.

The cost?

A whole pile of waiting,
A liberal amount of ranting about why it isn't here yet,
Endless debates over whether the Pegasos would have been a better choice,

Eventually, the cost in financial terms starts to look less important ;-)

ACE,

Me too !
I did Physics with Astro, though, at Leeds, 91-94
Where did you go ? I did apply to Leicester, looked nice, but they didnt offer me a place.

I did forget to mention the monitor - yup, I'll survive with me dodgy old Mikrovitek multisync until I can afford a TFT 15". (mmmmm TFT ! )

Why not just install the Samba client on the Miggy and network the printer?

Hey,
I studied Phys w/ Astro too! (great minds, eh)  Went to King's London. I did a Masters project on Semiconductor detectors - pixel detectors, for use on missions (noise on CCDs too much of a problem when you start getting close to the Sun, no CTE problem with Pix Detectors, each pixel bump bonded to its own amp), but haven't really done much astronomy at home. Any recommendations of good sites for amateur CCD astronomy?

That would be impressive :-)
