Title: Amos, Easy Amos or Amos Pro or maybe Blitz Basic?
Post by: CyberStorm on December 11, 2004, 05:37:57 PM
Think about starting some programming on the Amiga. But which language to choose?

I just read the manual to amos and that seems to be really easy to use, especially when coming to make use of graphics and sound. Actually it seems to be even easier than on the Commodore 64, which I used to programmed long ago, that's nice.

But there is different versions, Amos, Easy Amos and Amos Pro. What are the difference between them?

Then there is also the Blitz Basic, which also is to be find for the PC, maybe that is a better choice than Amos?

Using an Amiga 1200 030-50, 16 mb for the moment on which one I intend to program. But as I plan to buy an Amiga One later it would be nice if the programs written will work on the Amiga One too, even if not PPC native.

My plans are not to write any comercial software, not in the near future at least, and thats why I'm thinking of one of these languages. But maybe there is other alternatives that is even better?

So which language to choose?

Well I never used AMOS, but I was into Blitz pretty heavily for a while and I think it's better :)  There seemed to be a lot more good quality games made in Blitz than AMOS, although there were a LOT more AMOS games around.. maybe that says something about how easy it is to use.

If you are interested in more than just games, then I think Blitz has the advantage there, it has easy access to all the OS functions for writing your own apps and whatnot (maybe AMOS does too).

I don't think either is going to be particularly portable though, although Bernd Roesch has written an updated Blitz "clone" called AmiBlitz that may be available for the A1.. and come to think of it, AMOS went open source a while ago I think, so there may be someone doing something with it as well.

Both amos and blitzbasic won't run on OS4/AmigaOne. You should maybe think about programming in C/C++, its much more powerful than basic and your programms will be much esier to port to os4(basicly only a recompile) and even non amiga platforms.

AmigaE is easy to learn and use and the compiler (original EC) is very fast on low end Amigas.

Btw AMOS is *very cool*. You can use dual playfield mode, HAM, sprites, copper, BOBs etc etc etc efficiently and easily. But of course such stuff wont work on expanded Amiga.

It isn`t a clone, RWE/Leading Edge released all the sources to it when they quit the amiga scene and Berndt has carried on updating/bugfixing and generally improving it all round.
The name change from Blitz to AmiBlitz was just a condition of using the sources, to avoid any confusion of between it and the commercial PC version.

Unfortunately, it still only compiles 68k code, but that should run under emulation on OS4. AFAIK, it`s only 3rd party user libs that hit the hardware that wont work properly on the A1 & Pegs.
