Title: What are the prices for a 60 ns 128 Mb Ram or 50 ns 64 Mb ??
Post by: Effy on December 07, 2004, 08:34:29 AM
Most of the times my sorry mind is blurred by a lot of things, but yesterday evening before my girlfriend undressed herself I came up with a bright idea, for me at least.
I wanna make my turboboards faster (PPC+Blizzard+Microbotics) and have a hardware tune is of course one of the first things to think of, have another crystal with higher speed and a big fan and up you go. But I appearantly forgot one little thing that can also be done, which probably is extremely obvious for most of you but not for me : buying faster Ram !! I found on the Big Book in the discription of my Microbotics 1230XA that there is a setting for 50 ns Simms. I was shocked ! Didn´t know this exists, really !! So I want to know where I can get those and how much it would cost. Also those 128 Mb modules, can you use all EDO or Simm modules as long as they are 72 pins ?? And what would be the price of those ??? Let´s keep it simple and think of doublesided modules ...
Advice please. I´m very short of cash at the moment but plan on robbing the national bank soon so that will give my bank account more breathing room  :lol:

If I'm not mistaking there was actually 30 or 40ns simms on some GVP cards at one time, though those where probably specially made. Anyway... 50ns isn't all that uncommon as you might think, every now and again one passes by me. Though from that to specific get a highspeed 50ns at high capasaty at the same time is another story.

If you have a 60ns simm you could add some cooling too it and see if it would go at 50ns though, it's been known to happen.

If you get a real 50ns 64Mb simm I think you'll have to coff up about as much as you'll have to do for a 60ns 128Mb simm, about 35$ each... if that's a singlesided 128Mb'er I think the prise is 10-15$ more (singlesided 64Mb is perhaps a 5$'er more tops).

Some ships will have either -50, -60 , -70 or -5, -6, -7 in their model number but not all have it.

The lower the number the faster the chip.
That is the refresh speed in nanuseconds

What I meen is that you can "overclock" the simm by setting it at a faster speed than it's originaly made for. Example a 70ns simm might very well work in 60ns mode, or a 60ns simm work in 50ns mode... but it's putting more stress on the simm so adding a heatsink to the simm might be a good idea.

We sell double sided 128MB SIMMs for the Blizzard PPC and they are actually 60ns.  Plenty in stock ATM.

Amigakit : you mean "This SIMM has been fully tested on the BlizzardPPC and will work on other selected Amiga 1200 accelerators. It is double sided and larger than a normal SIMM, so will not fit the Blizzard 1230" for 43,32 euro ??? Doesn´t look bad at all  :-)

I just pulled a few SIMMS from an old Pentium Pro server (HP Netserver) and plugged one 128MB in my blizzard SCSI option (it's a big simm) and one 32MB on the Blizzard itself. The modules are 60ns and work like a charm in my miggy!
If you are interested: I have one more 128 and 32MB (same combo) gathering dust in my drawer.

Depends on how much you would like to have for it ?!
It´s not that I am desperate about memory, I have plenty of now at my cards but no 128 Mb module yet ...

I bought a pair of these 128MB 50ns SIMMS:
eBay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6728559255)
eBay auction #2 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6728558608)

The problem is that they are designed for 3.3V, so we'll see what happens when I get them and put them in my BlizzardPPC... :roll:

Please let me know if they work. I have also just bought several 128 Mb HP server EDO´s but if it turns out that the voltage required is wrong then there´s no use of trying them out, is there ?  :-?

They work fine! :-) The seller has plenty of these and he's selling them every now and then on eBay. This (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6750748658) was his latest auction for a pair of them, going for just over $20. However, you could try contacting him directly. I did, to get a pair of spare SIMMs just in case... :-D

That´s very fine for you but I have already tried 3,3 Volt modules, HP ones, in my BlizzPPC 160/040 (don´t have that anymore) and the result was that my 128 Mb module got fried, the BPPC got fried, the A1200 motherboard got fried ... not so great eh ?!

Actually I was so happy when I got those 2 128 Mb modules that I immediately ordered 7 more before I even tried any of those 2 !!! The story is not new anymore, my Amiga got burned, but the 7 other modules did arrive after two months of waiting due to a major delay in the post services or so.
I am selling them now again on Ebay, clearly NOT for Amiga !!

This is the link !!! (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6754346218&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT)  :-o

@EFFY

i have 3.3 volts simms,their work fine on my BLIZZPPC..
your simms must have made contact with the 68060 pins..

if anything the simms should just burn out..& blizzppc just crashes..this is what happen to me..

now i avoid any simm with a regulator..

BLIZZPPC OVERCLOCKED

@delshay

There was another thread about his frying experience, which I just read a couple of days ago. Anyway, it seems those HP server SIMM sockets uses non-standard pin-outs, which would explain the results. Otherwise just the SIMMs would be at risk of frying, as you said.
