Title: Band Aid 20 - Your Comments
Post by: CU_AMiGA on December 06, 2004, 03:10:51 PM
Hello

Well, the Band Aid 20 song is at number 1 in the UK charts. I am please only for the money it will be reasing for charity. But the song itself is utter rubbish. It is a shadow of the 1984 version and i almost need new underwear when i heard the Dizzy Rascal (c)rap part. The whole song sounds as though pre-school children messing about with tambourines and drums in a music room. What you other who have heard it think of it?

Regards,

Actually, I didn't think it was that horrendous...  Besides, everyone should put aside their cynicism and buy it as it's for a very good cause indeed.  You can console yourself with the knowledge that both Bono and Macca are involved, even if you can't stand the sound of everyone else taking part.

Personally, the very thought of the current trend of Urban/R&B/boy bands/girl bands/etc brings on violent intestinal distress but the message of Band Aid is as valid now as it was in 1984 - even if then it featured "artists" like Bananarama and Phil Collins who we all seem to have forgiven for their musical misdemeanours.

@PMC

Yep. You're right about and i totally agree with you. I am glad it got to number 1, i may buy it during the week - for charity. But i'm afraid the song is terrible in my opinion.

Actually, i think a radio station here in the UK has banned playing the new Band Aid song, instead, they play the 1984 version.

How utterly despicable.

I daresay said radio station still persists with airing stuff like Westlife, Nelly and Girls Aloud?

What I find utterly despicable, is Busted "singing" on this record.

These middle-class little boys have gone on record as saying they do not believe in the redistribution of wealth, and that if people are poor then it is of their own making!

What is Band Aid 20, if not redistribion of wealth to the poor?

Pathetic.

These people are only involved with this record to boost their own commercial profile.  Someone please pass me the sick bucket.

Me too.  There's something seriously wrong in the world when artists like Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Otis Reading, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Michael Hutchence and Kirsty McColl all pass way before their time and we're stuck with the likes of Westlife, Usher and everything else that Pap Idol pedals onto the public in shameless orgy of promotion before innovation.
[/rant]

but I agree that some of the artists involved may have been in it for the glory as much as for making a difference.

Well I haven't heard that quote, but I'd be disgusted if it were true.  However I suspect you're right.

Of course they are! But at least they've loaned their services for free and that BandAid 20 is going to hopefully capture the hearts of a new generation.

IMHO Bob Geldof and Midge Ure sum up everything I admire in humanity for all that they achieved with Band Aid, Live Aid and their continuing efforts to bring the plight of the third world into our very living rooms.  The fact that they remain laudably self deprecating about their achievement speaks volumes.  If using fame to help others makes the slightest difference then long may it continue.

I agree, you would be better off giving your money throughn a charity tin as there are less overheads (read profit) for the record companies - but at least on the new version you get a copy of the original so that alone might make it worthwhile buying.

In the mean time try this link. (http://www.bandaiddilemma.net)

Yup, I`m with you on that one.
Only trouble is, not many charities use collection tins these days.
Last time I got stopped by a charity worker, I wanted to give them a couple of quid change I had in my pocket, but he said he couldn`t accept money, the only way I could donate was to fill out a direct debit form for a monthly donation !

I just kinda get {bleep}ed off that people can`t just give to charity without wanting something in return, no matter if it`s a crappy song, book, or sponsoring someone to sit in a bath full of beans..

Don't panic gang, this version of 'Do they know...' will be forgotton and glossed over just like that crappy version in the late 80's with Kylie singing at the beginning.

You never hear any mention of THAT do you !

Oh dear lord no...

Am I alone in having not forgiven Kylie for her late 1980's bubble perm and annoying Stock, Aitken & Waterman atrocities?

Now she's re-invested herself as Madonna circa 1990 and everyone raves about her arse, people forget she was responsible for some hideous crimes not so long ago.  Back in the day, Kylie was regarded as THE epitome of crap manufactured disposapop.

Thinking about that last sentence, had we known then what we know now, suicide rates would be much higher....

My opinion is don't waste your money on such tripe as you can bet some of the money is going in someones pocket and not to charity and no doubt half the "artists" featured are doing it boost their career rather than out of a sense of goodwill. If you really want to support the charity then why not donate directly?

I'm sure I cannot be the only one to remember this (somone here in the Office does anyway!)

SO Band Aid IV : Tatu, Garth Brooks, ALL of the x-factor contenders...

Any other suggestions?  They'd make more money from pledges NOT to release it!

IMHO - Its a Piece of crap. The DarknesS? OMG. Whats gone wrong here. Listen to the mix (sorry to be a music critic, but it's what i did in uni :-) , the guitar sounds like someone in a guitar lesson, the solo completley dosent fit the song. They are a bunch of talentless gits all trying to get their carrer's an extra brownie point imho. There are loads of people calling my local radio station saying they will pay for 10 copies if :

1. They dont actually recieve the record.

2. The radio station dont play it any more.

Hahahah! I cant beleve there are people like Busted involved in this, actually they won record of the year? Yeah, the record of the year that makes the best coaster.

Im sorry, there isnt a lot of talent about nowaday's it seems to get worse and worse the more bull they release, manufactured crap from shows like Pop Idol, and the like makes me sick. X factor, yeah in this case X = Poo. :-)

I think most points about this record have already been aired, it sounds like it was thrown together in about 3 hours, I cant beleve people like Paul Mcartney let themselves be in the video. Id be ashamed.

But saying that, It is for charity, and thats a good thing. Pity its not for some war charity, im sure the people fighting would stop instantly if they didnt release the song :-)

Kev

This insane drivel ruined my Christmas. Thank god it's not at number 1 over here any longer.

If you don't like it then turn off the radio...  IMHO it's justified in reaching no 1 because it's raising funds for charity which is something desperately needed right now.

I don't like the song or most of the so called "artists" involved, but if some good can come out of it then it's a very good thing IMHO.

However, I daresay very soon the latest reality TV "personality" will release a record of mind-numbing levels of crappiness, which will be bought/downloaded as a ring tone/given too much airplay by every pre-pubescent or corporate sponsored radio station, thus claiming the number one spot and making yet more shed loads of money for the faceless suits forcefeeding us the endless diet of manufactured disposapop at the expense of true innovation.
