Title: Prometheus Board with Voodoo 3 problem
Post by: enstz on December 02, 2004, 09:36:40 PM
I recently bought a prometheus board, voodoo 3 and a realtek 8029as from a guy off ebay.

Everything was great, came in original matay prometheus box.
the prometheus board was wrapped up very nicely and secure.

I installed it fine and got the realtek card working in os3.9 perfectly. running completely fine no crashes or sudden drops.

However i got my voodoo 3 working with the prometheus, but only just, the problem is that I get "lines" going vertically from each on screen "sprite" like when i move a window or the mouse, there are residual lines on the right of the mouse pointer etc.

In the case of the mouse pointer these lines move with the mouse as if it is part of the cursor, in case of the windows the lines are 'pasted' onscreen and remain.

I've tried literally everything to get it working, i've tinkered with all values i could find, even the tool types, and have reinstalled and upgraded/downgraded drivers numerous times to get it working.

Each time it works, but i still get the same problem and other people with the exact same configuration have no problems whatsoever.

Is this a hardware issue? I'm thinking about finding the drivers and testing to see if it's a problem with the card by sticking it in a windows box.

It could be something else installed on your system that is conflicting with the Prometheus files.

If it's not too much trouble, perhaps a good way to solve this problem would be to reinstall the entire OS and start from scratch, but this time, install the Prometheus drivers and Picasso 96 software before any other stuff, like patches, etc., and work your way up from there.

I'd wait first for some other (better) advices before trying out mine, though. :-)

It does in deed sound like memory issues. My old BVision made lines on the screen but that wasn't bad drivers but bad memory on the card. :-(

well I tried multiple different versions of the prometheus / picasso drivers starting with the lowest.

after a while i gave up trying and put it into a windows xp box to have a look at it. Same problem, those damn lines. The exact same kind as i described on my amiga.

I once tried a voodoo 3 that was very similar in the winxp box and it was fine. This indicates a hardware problem to me. unfortunately i no longer have that working voodoo 3 as I gave it away some time ago.

The reason i got the voodoo 3 was because it was pretty much guarenteed to work. Does anybody know how to get other supposedly supported cards working in the prometheus like the S3 Virge or S3 Ultra64, prometheus supposedly supports it but it won't pick it up when i put it in and check the prefs on the 'attach to board' menu.

I'm so close yet so far.
:-?

Not really the same topic, but can you use two or more different gfx cards in an Prometheus together ??? To have a multi monitor system ???  :-?

I don't think there's a problem inserting two gfx cards but there's no drivers to support 2 gfxcards so the answerr is no. :/

I have PicassoIV besides Voodoo3 to handle PAL modes (100Hz). Acts as backup, too.
Driving with too high pixel clocks creates interesting GFX errors - have noticed when a mode meant to Voodoo slips to PIV; haven't blown it yet...
