I wonder if some people start businesses with the intention of screwing every business/one in sight?
It's a strange world, really...
-
yup! it's weird.
I've worked with alot of different people but when I find the ones that are fair, decent, truthful and actually know how to run a business, I stick to them like glue.
it's a rare find, but those people I am loyal to for eternity. And it's not hard to understand why.
As to why some people can't run a business?? well, maybe they just don't have the talent for it.
but I really don't care what the reason is.
I don't have the time to waste on their therapy. :lol:
I'd rather spend my time looking for superior human beings.

Always examine the track record.

The third worst ones are the ones who screw their employees. The second worst ones are the ones who screw their customers. The worst ones do both.

...and hopefully screw themselves in the process :-)

Well Karlos, it goes without saying.
Anyone who does both is a WayneKerr! ;-)

Here's a loosely related question:
Why do we use sexual metaphors for treating people unfairly? ("You f**ked/screwed me over", etc.)
-
Well, I think it's not so much sex as rape, really - after all you never hear people say "We screwed me over", it's always "You screwed me over". Rape is one of the vilest things one individual can do to another, hence I think it's being used ain this way to express one's sense of being abused.
-
Here's a scenario that explains this quite well..
A little boy and his father were waiting for the bus when the little boy saw two dogs crossing the road. The dog at the back was mounting the dog in the front.
"Dad," said the little boy, "look over there. What are those dogs doing?"
The father had to think of something quick, and he told his son that the dog at the back had got sore paws from walking all day and the dog at the front had kindly allowed him to put his paws on her back while they crossed the hot road.
"Just goes to show, " said the little boy wisely, "you help somebody out and you still get screwed"
-----------------------------------------------------------
When I left the hospital in JHB to come to London, one of the superintendents (a very elegant, senior lady) asked me what I expected the major changes to be, with regards to working in the UK instead of SA.
I said "I won't have to do this anymore" and I shuffled down the corridor, holding my ankles. She laughed about it, but she got the point too.
Of course the same thing happens here in the UK, but it seems to be a bit more civilized, in that you have advanced warning of the deed and there are limits to how badly they can screw you over, unlike SA where at the moment a white male of working age is automatically screwed over, regardless of his expertise. And there they screw you over so that you get nailed financially AND you can't advance in your career AND you end up facing increased odds over personal safety.
There have been several attempts by agencies and health professionals here in the UK to take advantage of me, but I have always found a way to not get abused (although the theft of intellectual property is a continuous threat). But in SA it is much more difficult to get satisfaction when a deal goes sour.

Perhaps, that seems quite logical. However I've never heard someone actually use the word rape in that context. Wouldn't that suggest that the word "rape" is more of a taboo than the actual act? I'm not so comfortable with that notion. (http://www.bluecollardistro.com/messageboard/images/smiles/icon_neutral.gif)

Well, it was only a guess :-) That said, I have heard people use "the R word" in a similar context, eg "that policy raped the company". Of course, again the F word is used far more frequently.
-edit-
Of course I also heard the word used to describe the invasion of a country for it's resources.
The other point that I would add is that rape is usually about power and dominance rather than sexual gratification. This would seem to fit the idea that someone rips you off or treats you badly because they can and it gives them some feeling of power.
-/edit-
I think you have a point but perhaps its not a taboo per say, just that maybe people recognise at some subconcious level that actual rape is *far* worse than being ripped off financially. That is to say there's a sort of unwritten rule not to use the word lightly and therefore belittle the seriousness of the crime. Pure conjecture, mind...

A metaphor that's pretty close to the original (supposedly archaic) meaning of the word, quite interesting.

Nah, I think I agree. Which is why I bought it up, since Mike's post suggests to me that sexual intercourse carries inherent violations.
-
Actually I think the expression "screwed" comes from the screws inmates were forced to turn in Victorian prisons, and not from sex. :)
-
Given that rotation is the principal mechanism by which a screw is inserted, you have to wonder how the sexual connotation was arrived at...

Strange???...No. Money hungry/greedy???...Yes.

I don't how it was arrived at, but the principle holds true for those times where you tell your boss to 'sit on this and rotate'

Great Avatar, man. That must be the windsock that Bloodline and Karlos teamed up to make :lol:

Its only Avsock.jpg v0.1beta, it took me all of two minutes to put together, I'm gonna start work on something a lot nicer, if thats the word to use ;-)

Admittedly, it does look a little clean, however it is quite rigid :-D

@adz
:lol: Superb!
I was thinking of using a picture of a mucky old sock and an anvil (both of which I posted in one of the threads) to make an avatar, but alas I decided against :-)
-
@Karlos
Superb!
Why thank you, now all I need to do is add a few odd coloured stains and I'm done :-D
-
@adz
If you can manage to meet the filesize requirements, I suggest you try to animate some single black pixels erratically circling around it. Should give an appropriate impression of the degree of the overall fetidness of it.

True, but I get the impression that the above expression is merely a later graphical interpretation of the existing expression "get screwed"

@Karlos
<----- Like that???
-
Hey...I just remembered that my religious beliefs involving the universe in my drawer involves socks. Stop deriding my beliefs, you goddamn liberals!

I finally gave in to the temptation to create a sock related avatar.
@Kenny
Do not let the southern heretic near the holy drawer. Surely he will despoil it ;-)
