Title: Welcome back to the Amiga
Post by: Thunder on November 24, 2004, 01:18:24 AM
Hello All!

I'm new to this forum, having been away from the Amiga for a long time...

I just thought i'd say hi, and let you all know a little about me.

I guess my story probably rings true with alot of you guys (and girls) out there, starting with the Amiga after the 64 in around 87 ish, after lusting after the Amiga 1000 when it was first launched (how well can you remember seeing the graphics of the 1000 for the first time?)... well, after the 64 it was awesome indeed, and my particular thing being art, I had to have one, soon as the 500 was released in the UK, I bought one.

It was a kickstart 1.2, I got the A501 512k expansion, a Commodore 1084 monitor and a cumana external disk drive, for around 800 pounds total if I remember rightly, I can just picture me balancing the monitor box on the back seat of my Honda CBX, holding the box with one hand and trying to ride with the other... (things you do when your 18 huh?)

I can still remember the feeling of guilt when I got it all home, paying all that money for a computer, and not really knowing what to do with it, but after a few days that soon went...

I mainly used the Amiga for art - 3D animation and video work, my favourites were Photon Paint - Sculpt 4D - real 3D - Imagine etc... and of course the games, although I've never been a huge games player, stuntcar racer springs to mind

Ultimatly in around 1994 ish I ended up with a 1200, with a Microbotics 1230 50mhz and a 120mb hard disk, but after seeing my mates 486 PC running 3d studio, the Amiga had to go, so i'm one of those who deserted when the big C went under. (shame on me)

Which brings me to the present, I've always loved Amiga's, there is something really satisfying about using one, especially now, in the world of ever increasing bloatware, spy this and virus that, the Amiga makes a refreshing and very nice, not to mention nostalgic change...

So, I got hold of a mint 2000 r6.3 to see what I could do with it, in this modern ADSL world (I always wanted a 2000, but could never afford one), and i'm slowly getting it to a usable config...

Amiga 2000 ECS 6.3
Phase 5 Blizzard 2040 40mhz 68040 SCSI II Card with 128mb ram fitted (4 32mb simms)
Seagate Medalist 4gig SCSI II Hard Disk
Toshiba 32 speed SCSI CD Rom
2x 3.5 internal Floppy disks

I also have on the way an A2030 Amber Flicker fixer card, and a Retina ZII 24bit card (don't know if I can use these together?)

I also upgraded the ROM from 2.04 to 3.1

What I want now is a ethernet card, so I can link up with the PC and hopefully use the internet on the Amiga (although, even with a 40mhz 040, i think it's gunna be slow)

so... thats me, hope I haven't bored you all too much, and I look forward to any replys or advice I might get

Regards
Steaven

Good for you and welcome. I started with an ADAM computer with Colico Vision. The after loosing all my data on the tape I returned it. The I got a C64 with a 1541 disck drive and an MPS100 printer. Then I sold it and got an A2000 with an IBM bridgeboard. My son bough an A500. I then got an A4000/030 and my son got an A3000. All are still working I love every one of them. Waiting on a new 2meg chip ram for my A4000 to be back operational. :-D  :-)
