Title: Amiga in a box - slow, diagnosis??
Post by: Plus4 on November 22, 2004, 09:37:19 AM
Managed to get Amiga In A Box set up last night (finally) and it looks great!  However, it runs REALLY slowly on my PC.

What am I doing wrong?

Got the latest version for Winuae set up to emulate a expanded A1200 with Kick31.rom and I'm running this on my 1.9 Ghz PC, My PC setup runs FarCry fine so I'm assuming it's powerfull enough for AIAB?

I've had to set Winuae's CPU settings to 'Balance between chipset and CPU' for get any sort of speed - surely this cannot be right?

I'm thinking I maybe should be emulating a A3000 or A4000 or need to tinker with some other Winuae settings?

Anyone who can offer a soloution will make my Monday a whole lot better!

Thanks in advance...

The AIAB config is quite old. For the more modern WinUAE versions, you should check the settings:

On the priority page set the leftmost to "normal".

On the CPU page choose:
68040
JIT enabled
JIT cache 8MB
"fastest possible but..."
move "CPU idle" into the middle.

You may also want to check the ram and sound settings, although these usually don't affect speed so much. However, disabling sound completely might speed up a lot.

Bye,
Thomas

I hope you're not running in AGA mode?

That really slows things down to unmanageable on my 1.4GHz AMD.

You may need to do that through Workbench:Prefs/Screenmode.  You might be able to do it outside of the emulator, but I'm not sure.

I know that about a year ago I used WinUAE every day for all my mails, installed OS 3.9, AGA screenmode, and Genetic Species really rocked !!! Think I had close to 512 Mb Ram in my Workbench  :-o Cool  :-D My pc was an AMD1700+ running on 1466 Mhz ...

I have just purchased Amiga Forever 6 and I have had some problems with speed and configuations. I have had just  Winuae (old versions) and found it hard to configure by itself ;so I tried AIAB and it works ok.

What I think is you almost have to get AF6 or AIAB to be able to emulate an amiga. Winuae by itself is much more diffulcult but the newer versions are getting much easier ;if you have a real amiga to link with.

I wish we could get some standard settings/configuations to help us. I find that the more I use AF6 the better I get at it. I think if we could get the tricks of emulating an amiga ;that we would have better results.

BTW- I have been using Amiga's since 1994 and I had A500,A3000,A2000 and A4000 but I still have some problems with the emulation on a PC. I currently have no Amiga's but would love to get another!

Thanks              :-D

Not really a help for your problem, but there is an alternative to AIAB now, AmigaSYS (http://www.amiga-news.de/de/news/AN-2004-11-00089-DE.html).

Hum,
i think Vincent has the problem cornered...

Install the P96 `screenmode/program` that came with the package...

It'll turbo boost the operating system by retargeting the graphics.
