Question 1:
Read lots on WHDload *but* how do I install / use it? Is it downloaded as an ADF and executed in WB ?
Question 2: Can I make my WinUAE print out (say, from DPIV) to my normal PC printer?
Any knowledge appreciated...
Keep it Jack and Jane for me - Rgds.

You CAN print from UAE just when you start on the config screen, select Game & IO Ports and on the top right under serial parallel theres a drop down to select your printer.

I cannot believe I missed this - Thanks ! I'll try this tonight!

Heh I like that Jack and Jane line LOL!

Yeah - gotta be simple for me. My real amiga experiance is lost is the mists of time (I sold it when I was 23 & I'm now 31). I knew so much and even though some bits come back I need serious guidance! Anyways, I hope someone comes back on that WHDload thing...
 :-?

depending how u have got uae setup
download the whdloaduser archive from aminet or the whdload website
if u r using a harddisk file, tick the add pc drives at startup box
or if u just using a directory on your windows hardrive
then from the amiga side nivigate to that archive, unpack it, and install it, then read the instructions
-
OK - do I need anything special to unpack this?
-
Right depends on what version of workbench u are using
It would probably be easier to unpack it on the pee cee side as it gets complicated otherwise....
the problme is I dont know any unpackers for the pee cee that handle LHA files, somebody will know
-
I've got loads of versions of WB - do some of them have unpackers included?
-
Winrar handles Lha files, as far as I know.. Can be downloaded at www.download.com..
The only OS that has an unpacker built-in is OS3.9, to my knowledge.. Otherwise you have to download LHA for the Amiga, don“t know where though..

Changed the output to my printer but now if I try to print from say, Deluxe PtIV it just says 'cannot find device.printer'? Any ideas?

The WHDLoad thing:
ADF files are mostly from cracked ones. So using them for WHDLoad is not a good idea, because it won't work. ie: WHDLoad will quit and tell you it's either a cracked version or unsupported. :-(
This counts to nearly all NDOS games. (NDOS=NonDOS... or explained as a system which basically closes down DOS and uses it's own hardcoded system functions)
These are disks where you don't get any files too see or the disk will show up as DF0:NDOS on your Workbench.
But many DOS games (DOS games uses normal files on the disks and system functions to run the game) can be installed with WHDLoad. JOTD mostly supports in all in his installs cracked ones too. So you can install these ADF games. If you're using WinUAE, then put the ADF image into drive 0 when installing.
If you're using a real amiga, then you have to write back the ADF file back to a real floppy disk, or use a virtual disk system like FMS (which i use always). :-)

CaptainHIT - thanks for taking the trouble to write this, sorry what is JOTD?

Well... it all depends on what sort of printer you're using if you actually try to print from an application. You need to realise that even though you're "emulating an Amiga" you are in reality actually running the real operating system and the real programs. So, that being said, you do need to install a printer in your Workbench the same way as if you were using a real Amiga.
I've had some success using Epson printer drivers to print to my Epson inkjet printer - I have no clue what exactly goes on, but I think the emulator (winUAE) passes the print information to WindowsXP and windows XP say's ok this program wants me to print this thing to my default printer.
I have never got my Laser printer to work, and the results on my Epson Photo820 are never exactly what I'd expect them to be.
Printing from winUAE isn't something I've spent a whole lot fo time mucking about with - perhaps somebody else here can give you better advice. :-)

As regards the lha on the PC side, I use Filzip (works very well) and is free to download here:

You can get almost any amiga archivers from aminet here: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/aminet/util/arc/index.html
