Title: a1200 ppc603 68040 upgrade to 68060
Post by: keropi on November 17, 2004, 07:02:12 AM
Can you just take out the 68040/25 from a 603 ppc card and put a 68060 ????   :-?  Is it possible without soldering all over the place?

Hi Keropi,
I have read out there that it is possible, but not plug-and-play: it is solder-and-play.

You have to replace the oscillator crystals by other ones w/ different mhz. Then you can plug in the 060.

Once I saw photos from a guy who soldered SOCKETS to plug in and plug out the crystals, so you can change between cpus as you change your t-shirt.

Let me look for the article...

Check it out:

Then, this one is about overclocking but talks about the oscillators:

Luck!
(I'd like to see the results!)

This means that it's probably not too hard to upgrade an Apollo 4040 to a 4060? What we need is just a voltage regulator?

What is needed is:

1 A socket that fits the 060 (not the same as a 040 and you do not want to solder directly on the 060).

2 A voltage regulator, on the PPC board it's just moving a resistor to the right place.

3 A crystal that fits the 060 (remember the 040 only use half the crystal speed so a 040/25 uses the same crystal as a 060/50), again the PPC board have a small resistor for this (don't know why but that's the way it is).

4 Last but not least you need steady nerves and even steadier soldering hands cause it's not easy to solder off the 040 of the PPC board.

Hi,
as far as I know, only DCE could change a 68040 into 68060 BlizzardPPC board.
I once had a BPPC with 040, I had bought a cheap full 68060 on a Internet bargain sale.
Then I asked DCE whether I could do the change.
They answered (when they still answered!!!) that it was not enough to change CPU and add 3.3V regulator, in BlizzardPPC also flash rom had to be changed, since 68060.library had to reside into it. They offered to do the change for 25 euro, then I agreed and asked their address to send the board.
Never, never, never got an answer!!!
Then I sold everything.
BTW on Cyberstorm boards you can do the change because they don't have flash rom.
Ciao

That is true.. the BPPC board also needs to be reflashed into 060 mode but don't trust DCE's answerr, you can do it yourself and in fact Aminet have (at least used to have) this flash file for download. You need to reflash the card before you change the CPU.

so there remains the question of desoldering the 040, finding an appropriate PGA slot and solder it.
Quite a big effort!
Even if I have been using soldering iron for 40 years (now I'm 54), I wouldn't trust my self on that task.
