I put my plcc 68882 the wrong way on my accel, and it died.... My a1200 and accel are fine... Does it really matter? I use my a1200 for whdload games mainly
-
What frequency did it run at?
I'll have alook and see what ones I've got.

@amigakit
Haven't burned one but I wonder if you happen to have a 42-50Mhz 68882 PGA FPU in stock?
-
it did not burn from overclocking, I inserted it wrongly... now it is not operational (it also smells :-D ) It was a 33Mhz one from my M-TEC accell...
I also think that MTEC is overclocable... it has a jumper: 14Mhz,28 Mhz, and ASYNC ! Someone on ebay is selling a PowerComputing mtec clone @ 42Mhz

amigakit just ment what Mhz the FPU is so he can look if he has one in stock for you.

If all you are doing is playing WHDLoad installed games...then you will not miss the lack of an FPU.
Without going through all my WHDLoad games, and the documentation supplied with all the WHDLoad HD installers on the WHDLoad web-page...I cannot remember a game that requires, or runs better, with the addition of an FPU.
The only games that might gain from an FPU are going to be 3D doom-style games (Fears, Breathless etc.) and flight simulators (Falcon, Tornado etc.)
If these type of games are the ones that you play, or plan to play, read through the WHDLoad documentation supplied with the HD Installer, and see if an FPU is required, or enhances elements of the gameplay (i.e. makes it smoother or faster...)
If they do...buy another FPU...if they don't, save your money...

I have a few of those PLCC chips here (MC68882FN33A) and can send you one today if you want one. $5 including shipping to Greece (I'm in Canada). I think that's pretty cheap.
If you want one, toss $5 to glen#inet2000.com (replace the # with @) on PayPal and it's yours.

A fried 68882 is not going to hamper oldschool gaming at all.
The only classic amiga 680x0 compatible games that I know of that absolutely need an FPU are Quake1 and 2. Possibly some flight sims will make use of them too, but I couldn't say which.
All the older Doom style games use integer mathematics (ie not needing an FPU) for their 3D engines.
The only things you will miss out on are if you are into using things like 3D rendering programs, many of which do benefit from an FPU.

Don't leave it in if you stuffed it up.
You should be able to still use the machine with it out. Perhaps you need to set a jumper though.

Sound advice - although I'd assume removing it is the first thing he did once he saw it give up the blue smoke...
-
if the dead 68882 is in, the amiga won't start, just flashes power led... ofcourse it is OUT! :-D :-D :-D
-
But the new one fixed it in record time! :-)
I'm still amazed that it took 4 days to get that fpu to you in Greece from Canada.

To answerr the question honestly. I've had 68882 FPU in a few of my 030 cards and I've never felt that I gained anything significant from it. Now with the FPU built into 040/060 that's a hole other story. Only about 1% of Amiga games will benefit from an FPU and then only slightly when it's a slow 68882 FPU.
That said, for 5$ incl s/h I'd buy it anyway just to be prepared. :)

The only reason I added a 68882 to my Blizzard 1230 all those years ago was for 3D raytracing with Cinema4D.
