This has been done before, but I think its time to ask again with new members and so on...
So I ask..
1. What is your main OS?
2. Why?
3. Are you conidering switching to a different OS?
TIA :-D
-
At home..
1) OS4
2) Because it does everything I want in a fast, efficient, stable way. I enjoy using it and programming for it. It boots quickly, and looks nice. Also, I know AmigaOS like the back of my hand, so it feels like home.
3) No way ;-)
-
1. Win2k
2. It's stable, does what I need and doesn't suck as much as Linux (oh and it's er....cheap....).
3. Nope (Well, MacOS if I win the lottery. And if OS4 ever gets released and I still haven't sold my BlizzPPC I'll get that, but I doubt it'll ever by my main OS again).
-
1. Win2k
2. Stability, it's the OS I know best, and software support.
3. If OS4 gets decent software support and if I can afford an A1 at that point.
Though 3a - I suspect I'll be running Windows in some capacity given my business. Though maybe just on my laptop, though as I've just upgraded my PC, that'll have a good few years at least.
-
1a. Work:- Win9x/2k/XP
1b. Home:- AmigaOS3.0, WinXP, Solaris9
2a. cos its work
2b. amiga for fun, PC for games, Solaris to keep UNIX skills
3a. migrating from win9x/2k/novel mess to WinXP
3b. amiga upgrade to 3.9/4.0 with 3.1 roms and PPC.
-
Hello,
For me:
1) OS3.9 - BB1 on my A2000 (my A2000 doesn't boot when I install BB2, maybe due to a ROM remapping problem) and OS3.1 on my A1200
2) OS3.9 looks nice and includes CDRom features, transparent menus, and so on... OS3.1 is just enough for my game-oriented A1200 (boots very fast !)
3) I don't want to change !

1. BeOS
2. Very responsive, boots in seconds, doesn't have all the malware problems of M$ or the aggro of Linux
3. Not any time soon
-
1) MorphOS
2) Why not ;-)
3) Nope
-
Work = XP
Home, main PC = XP (gaming)
Home, second PC (internet, e-mail) = Slackware 10, BeOS
Laptop = SuSE 9.1
Waiting for the micro-A1, then OS4 will replace the Slack/BeOS box for internet and the second PC will get turned into a media server for the home network.
-
1. Workbench 3.1 (on an A500)
2. Windows makes me puke, Linux is a pain in the ass and WB3.9 is a joke.
3. BeOS is nice, but dead. I'm getting Mac OSX when my poor old A500 dies.
-
Linux (Fedora Core distro)
It works as it does the vast majority of what I need of an OS to do.
No. I'll be glad to reformat the older systems to AROS when networking comes along though.

Hi HopperJF
1. Mac OS X 10.2.8 (Great OS!) :-)
2. The situation that i am in only allows me to MacOS X. But i don't mind.
3. I still have Amiga OS 3.9 CD, waiting to be used in my Amiga project. But Mac OS X will be my main OS, Amiga OS 3.9 will be for entertainment, games.
Regards,
-
Ok, time for mine! :-)
1. MacOS X 10.2.8 (Jaguar)
2. Yes it is a good OS, however I will be upgrading to TIGER in 2005. A drawback of Jaguar is that it won't run Skype :-(
3. Not at all. MacOS is pretty much the only OS I use, and I'm more than comfortable with it! :-)
-
@HopperJF
I completely agree with you. The MacOS X is a very good OS! Is the TIGER the sucessor to the PANTHER? I was gonna purchase that one but now i may hold my cash. :-)
Regards,
-
At work:
Windows XP, mainly because I don't have a choise. I doubt the IT-department would let me go back to Win2k. :D
At home:
Windows XP and Mandrake 10.
My girlfriend would not approve anything else! :-D
I am learning a bit of Linux though, and I'm considering to switch once I know it good enough.
-
What is so good about Windows2K? I always thought that WindowsXP was far more reliable and compatible.
-Edit-
I use WindowsXP at college, we had Windows2K last year. I seem to like WindowsXP better.
-
Hi CU_AMiGA
Panther was released in December 2003, but the next version will be TIGER due for shipping in early 2005. If you visit the Apple site you will see it has sh*tloads of new features and so on that should give Longhorn a swift kick up the ass... although the sweet thing is Apple may even have 10.5 out (successor to Tiger) before Longhorn!
-
According to my own experience, the main difference between a fully patched 2k-system and an XP-system, is the lack of eye-candy in 2k. This makes the OS a little more resoponsive.
-
XP compatibility is a joke for older software and hardware. You need to patch like feck.. lol. I prefer Win 98SE any day.. although it doesn't bother me anymore. I never have to touch Windows, in fact I gave my PC to my parents the Mac is all I need now :-)
-
@home
1: AmigaOS 4 (dev-pre)
2: It feels like the AmigaOS I allways wanted.
3: Time will tell
@work
1a: Win2k/XP on client
2a: Mac hardware is too expensive
3a: Sure
1b: Linux on server
2b: It performs better than win2003 server for our use.
3b: Noo

Hi,
1. - Internet & mail, programming, office (wherever possible): AmigaOS 3.9 BB2
- Gaming, office (wherever I have no adequate Amiga program): Windoof 98 (it's quite safer than XP and doesn't requires such a hardware overkill)
- Firewall & router, mail/print/file/time - server: Debian Linux (486DX2/66 :-D)
2. I try to use the OS that is best for my needs, I'm very familiar with AmigaOS, it is small, very fast, and safe
3. AmigaOS 4.0, when it will be released for CyberstormPPC or if I have the money to buy a micro-ATX AmigaOne.

1. MorphOS:
2. Fast, responsive. Nice Apps like ANR, SongPlayer. Can do what I want (MPlayer, SimpleMail, AmIRC...) almost (no Papyrus yet).
3. no.
-
I thought Papyrus was now shipping for MorphOS?
-
HopperJF wrote:

It's not on my desk yet.

1. AOS3.9 for everything except for schoolwork, priting, scanning, netbanking and the occasional divx showing, where i must use WinXP, which i have no problems using! But enjoy using amiga more...
2. Good looking - very customizable.
No hidden stuff in OS.
Fast filehandling together with opus 5.82.
No spyware, addware, annoying .exe programs vira/hack
Most essential tools and utilities present for every-day use.
Classic WHDLOAD games are currently the only stuff i play.
3. OS X or OS4
-
1. Windows XP
2. Because thats what I need for work
3. Not unless I get a job as a Unix admin or something ...
I do, however, use OS3.9 quite a lot, mostly to run ArtEffect 4 which is now my graphics program of choice :-) Plus any game playing I do is on Amiga ATM too, the xBox has been relegated! :-D
-
1.OS4 but also i love MacOSX and a lot of other OSes.
2.It is simple, fassssst, sexy, i find it "naturally". Also i can make the things i do for work with OS4.
3.No, but i use also other OSes, i would love to have a new Mac.
I use Win200 at work.
-
WinXP+SP2. Stable, fast, easy to use, more backwards-compatible with older games than Win2k (f'rex, I installed WC: Kilrathi Saga on this system which my 2k box flatly refused to even attempt...)
Overall, I like it just fine, MS corporate attitude aside. If THIS was the Windows that'd been released in 1995, I think history would've been a bit kinder to MS...! :-)
Would I switch to a different OS entirely...? Not sure: depends on the OS, depends on what's available for it. Currently my needs are: games (particularly first-person shooters and flight sims, and there's not a huge amount of the latter on consoles so don't tell me "just get a console for games!"), video capture and DVD authoring, some home accounting work, surfing the web, working on my web-page with a nice WYSIWYG editor, and writing.
While I could do 80% of that on the Mac, it's just not the platform for up-to-date games, and I don't like the closed architecture. Besides, if I wanted Linux, I'd buy Linux.
I could do about 30% of what I want on the new Amiga. Given that it's only 30% and the cost of getting an Amiga that would even come CLOSE to my current system specs is VERY high, I don't see myself making a switch. The A1 (and any other amiga-like systems) are currently "would be nice" but way, way out of reach price-wise.
-
1 Linux
2 Because it makes me feel superior to all others :-D , joking really because I think its good when your a programmer and I hate Windoze :pissed: and Windows-Games  (not all of
them)
3 Maybe to some other Unix OS or maybe my own one :-D
-
If WindowsXP had been released in 1995 MS would have gone under - people didn't mind getting 16Mb of ram for Win95, but 256Mb?? (I paid about £400 for 32Mb of ram at about that time) ... but thats history now ;-)
-
my main os is..
1.winxp
2.mac os x panther
3.amiga os3.1-3.9
4.commodore 64 v2 basic/commodore 128 v7 basic
:)

1. I have debian linux on all my x86 systems, except this old laptop that runs WinXP at this moment..
2. I use it because it is the best overall OS with updated software on the x86 platform. I really liked BeOS, but is not much of an alternative since it does not have much software or updated drivers these days..
3. I am not considering switching for now, but who knows what might happen in the future..

At work: Win-DOHS XP (read: eXtra Problems).
At home: AOS 4, AOS 3.9, AOS 3.1, AOS 1.3, Debian Linux, and Win-DOHS XP.
-
(Home)
Main OS: MorphOS
Why: Wanted an Amiga-ish solution that could run AmigaPPC software to replace my ailing amigas. At the time A1 and OS4 was not an option. It's also my main OS because my PC died shortly after getting my Pegasos.
Would I change?: not necessarily. I'd like to take a look at OS4 once it's fully released. I've been toying with the idea of getting a Mac (I have an older mac) and/or building an HTPC... However, that's not definate yet. ;)
(Work)
Main OS: XP on laptop, Solaris 8 on UltraSparc
Why: IT
Would I change?: Well, I don't have a choice in the matter. I don't see a big difference between XP and 2K (that I had before). I might try and see if I can move my sunbox to Solaris 9 or 10.

Work:
Fedora Core 2 on my workstation; RHEL3, SLES9, and Solaris on servers. We resell UNIX systems so we "eat our own dogfood". Most of our sales staff use Windows2K/XP but one uses Novell Linux Desktop.
Home:
Debian GNU/Linux, stable on fileserver & firewall, unstable on personal machine. I fell in love with Debian back in '98 and it has served me well, earning me my current job :-) Used to use XP for games, but Doom 3 and Anarchy Online both run in Linux now so have not booted that OS for weeks at a time.
Also of course, AmigaOS and AMIX as a hobby!
-
1. Amiga OS4-pre.
2. Why not? ;-)
3. Nope. But if I was, Linux would be a strong candidate.
-
1 Linux (on x86, PPC and Sparc SS20; RH7.3 and mixed debian stable/testing)
2 Surfing, email, office, internet firewall, developing AROS, ... (basically everything)
3 Nope, I think it would be hard to find an OS that is so flexible (I have a headless firewall and a desktop machine all on linux) and where I have so much insight in what is happening on the computer.
Staf.
-
1.MorphOS
2.It runs my favourite Amiga programs, it's
super fast and is continually expanding
with new software and updates. I also
find it a great OS for programming on. :)
3.not anytime soon

1. What is your main OS?
2. Why?
3. Are you conidering switching to a different OS?
1. My main home/browsing os is Windows XP SP1... my main work OS is HP/UX 11i.
2. for home, because I needed Windows XP because the tunnel software for connecting to work from home is only available for windows xp, per our company rules....and then any it was cheap as sin to put together a fairly fast pc, I have a clocked athlon xp that makes it a pr 3600+...cost about $400.
as for why I use hp/ux as my main work box...its what work uses, and it pays the bills.
3. switching...well, I have no immediate plans to switch...but I always consider switching..I'm a real fan of OS's....and alternative platforms, hence, why I'm here typing to you...but then again, I cannot stand amiga os anymore...if I feel nostalgic, just booting it up real quick reminds me that its old
-
1. Workbench 1.3
2. It has all I need. It comes with a calculator, date and time (in case I am not sure what the current date or time is), and there is also a neat little speech program included (a life saver when I get tired of speaking, or my throat hurts).
3. No need to switch to the bloated and overall much slower Workbench 2.0.
-
At home I use:
Windows XP SP1
Workbench 3.0 (WinUAE/ A1200)
I also play around with:
Mandrake 10 Community
TOS 1.62
Commodore Basic
AROS (now and then)
At work:
Windows XP SP2
On the road:
Windows Mobile 2003
Symbian
Switching: Unless AROS gets netowrking support by Christmas, I might go the MorphOS way
-
1. Windows XP Tablet Edition
2. My main PC is a tablet.
3. Yes. Longhorn.
-
So I answer.
1. Gentoo Linux (kernel 2.6.8.1).
2. Good question. The main reason is because it worked for me the first time and still does so. It's also the most stable OS I've ever used. It can be quite responsive if you know which tricks to apply. The shift from AmigaOS to Linux was easy because I used to run a lot of BSD and UNIX apps (GeekGadgets) under AmigaOS and Multiuser.
3. I'm not considering switching away from Linux. But I am planning to buy hardware for running MorphOS or OS 4.
-
Contiki baby!!!
Just kidding :-P
I wish.
-
A little late, but here's my 2 bits:
On my workstation
1. Solaris 9
2. It works better than any alternative on my UltraSparc, plus it has never chrashed on me, and has a nice array of software.
3. Not unless I get a nice, new fast machine.
On my laptop
1. Windows NT4 and NetBSD
2. NetBSD is rock solid, and has not yet failed me. NT4 is great when you need Windows compatability. Doesn't crash as much as Windows 9x, and still runs nicely on my lowend hardware (P266, 64 MB).
3. I might switch to Linux. I'm not really sure ATM. Linux does much better on Laptops for hotswapping, &c.
I'd love to be able to ditch all these in favor of an AmigaOne, Pegasus, or an upgraded A4kT, but I'm broke.

AMIGA OS4
Mac osx panther
-
1) Windows 2000.
2) Stable, does what I need for graphics editing, and lets me use Linux software (like Perl, PHP, Apache, Firefox) without all the command prompt and scattered filesystem nonsense. User interface is less configurable but easier to navigate than KDE. It allows me to upgrade whenever I want, since I'm not locked down with proprietary hardware, like the Mac. I do have a Linux box that I keep up to date, just in case those Linux guys stop sucking at writing interfaces, but so far I have found no use for Linux.
3) No. I'd rather die than get XP. Then again, I'll be working on getting my MCSE soon, so I'll have to upgrade sooner or later.
-
1. What is your main OS?
- MorphOS.
2. Why?
- Because I am worth it.
3. Are you conidering switching to a different OS?
- Definetely not.
-
"Because I am worth it"

Not even for a scooby snack?
-
1. AmigaOS3.9
2. Because i own it, it does (nearly) everything i would ever need to do, and because the cost of buying another computer is not justified by the small amount of extra useability i would gain.
3. Possibly PocketPC, or maybe a symbian phone, but only in addition to the amiga, not in place of it :)
-
1. OS4 pre-release (have an old pc that has been turned on 3-4 times since I got the pre-release, mainly to use home banking which needs JAVA).
2. Because its the best available OS for my A1 ;) Having used AmigaOS since '88 it feels like the natural choice. I have used other OS' aswell but always missed my Amiga when I sat in front of an Winblows machine.
My next computer will be an... Amiga. Whether it will be the MicroA1-I, or a next generation machine I still don't know. That will depend a little on software availability (seems we wont have a decent browser when the MicroA1-I is released, so my parents wont have much use for my A1-XE yet).
-
1. Windows XP SP2
2. Because i like it and it works well for me.
3. Nope
-
HopperJF wrote:
1. What is your main OS?
Windows XP Pro
2. Why?
Because my home PC is primarily a gaming machine, but also runs WinUAE and other programs. I should say that Amiga OS3.9 is my SECOND most used OS (even though it's emulated) and Windows 98 is a necessity at work (spit). XP isn't bad, but I find my home machine requires endless tweaking and fiddling about to run at peak efficiency. Amiga OS is simpler to maintain by comparison.
3. Are you conidering switching to a different OS?
Considering? Why not?
I like the thought of running OS4 on one of those microATX Amiga One systems, but expense may count against it despite the fact that Amiga is pretty much my favorite OS to use. Unfortunately, Win XP / 98 is a prerequisite for work so something other than MS is simply not a realistic proposition for my profession. I'd like to try AROS too, just to see if it's a viable way of keeping the Amiga "feel" alive on a modern machine at a low cost.
-
1. What is your main OS?
OS X
2. Why?
Because I hate Windblows M$ - its better than standard Linux, and its PPC powered.
3. Are you conidering switching to a different OS?
Yes, Morph OS & hopefully soon OS 4
:-D
-
1) Main OS:
Work: Solaris 9 and Win2k
Home: Win2k and Solaris 9 and Mac OS9.2
2) Using Win2k (upgrading it to XP) for basic stuff-- compatability with Work. The Solaris because that works the best on my Sun Workstation -- plus there are some advantages to it for some development work I do. Mac OS 9.2 cause my wife won't let me upgrade her computer to 10.3 lol
3) No --The Sun Workstations will stay with Solaris.
Yes -- on my Intel boxes will go Win XP with a Dual boot into Debian Linix .
One of the reasons for the XP and linix to to use one of the UAE -- yes reading all this about Amiga has got me very interested in trying out the A3.9 or A4.0 (if it is ever released). I am possibly interested in taking a plunge and getting an AmigaOne at some point .
I like the Idea of Alternatives, -- seems the world is divided into a binary choice on small and mid-tier computing -- MS and Unix (OSX falls into this being a variant on FreeBDS and Nextstep).
I like the idea that the Amiga kernal and Morph kernal are small, efficient with some nice features -- I also like the dedicated community of users.
That says a lot for the product .

1. WinXP
2. Runs well, does what I need, and I honestly cannot flaw it.
3. Would like to see linux make a big move into the desktop market, but I doubt that will happen in the near future, so no.
-
1. Windows XP/98 (gotta have both to do what I want)
2. Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 and Wing Commander series. (Not to mention providing network and display services to my Atari ST, Amiga, Atari XL, and Mac. Ever hooked up a Commodore 64 or Atari XL to a TV Wonder VE card for a 19" VGA display? Nice!)
3. Every time I say I will never switch, I do. Still love to use my Atari ST and looking forward to learning my Amiga 4000D.
