Mercury Astronaut (and one of the original 7 selected) Gordon Cooper passed away at his home on Monday. The cause of death was not listed.
Gordon had the distinction of being the last Mercury Astronaut to fly before NASA moved on to the Gemini program.
There are just three of the original seven still with us:
Wally Schirra
John Glenn
Scott Carpenter

Cooper was one of my childhood heroes, along with all the brave men during the early 60s who were pioneers in the last truly great golden age of exploration.
I'm saddened to hear of his passing and remember him for helping inspire the dreams of my childhood.

I wasn't even aware that Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton had passed away.

Yep. Shepard, Sleyton, Cooper and Grissom are gone. Just three left.
