Is conversion really that simple?

MPlayer, or more specifically mencoder, can transcode anything video to
anything else video.

what specifically do you want to convert? VHS-tape? DVD? VHS-tape to DVD??

Apparently it was a general question posted by the original poster (OP) in that list.  Since Debian GNU/Linux can also
run on the Amiga, I wondered what the Amiga had to do a conversion.  Also, is it really easy to make such a conversion
 without losing some of the original?
