Title: OS 3.9 not on Amiga ?
Post by: Godfather on September 24, 2004, 12:04:59 AM
Aloha,

The title says it all. Is there a way to run OS 3.9 not on a real Amiga...emulation ? c64 ? something ?

I just happen to have OS 3.9 CD...and well...my Amiga is not here at the moment....:pissed:

Thanks in advance.

You can run OS3.9 on your PC using WinUAE.

UAE the amiga emulator
WinUAE if you are on windows http://www.winuae.net (http://www.winuae.net)
But since you don“t have access to your real amiga getting the rom-image could be difficult, at least to do it legally.

Hum,
no point in running anything less on a PC...

copy the whole cd on into a windows folder/insert cd in to drive, boot up winuae, start up workbench from an ADF disk in DF0:,
and press install...(Or copy over the files by `hand` - not recomended for beginners)

(Well thats how i did it...)

For this project you WILL need a:
 40.6x ROM image,
System disk on ADF/ or tick the option in Winuae to recognise  scsi devices/cdrom and press the install icon in the 3.9CD,
 patience.

Well, as long as they download the exact same version they legally own in their Amiga, it's functionally the same as transferring it directly. Plus, as if it was their own dumped ROM, they wouldn't be using it simultaneously as their real ROM, which is what you have to do to be strictly 100% legal anyway.

You don't even need an ADF, you can start AmigaOS directly from the OS3.9 CD. Only the Kickstart file is needed.

Bye,
Thomas

How about suggesting Cloanto's "AmigaForever" then, which is sold with *LEGAL* ROM-files?

the fact that you can boot directly from the CD is also VERY impressive!

Any new-ish version of WinUAE will support proper CD-ROM support for the OS, and you can boot from it as it's made to be bootable on a suitably-equipped Amiga (a souped-up CD32 for example). This will give you access to all the commands you need to start off with a hardfile and install from the install-emu icon in the main part of the CD.

Not much I can add to that, except to say that once it's sorted/configured it works very nicely :-)

It took me a while, and alot of patience on Thomas' part, but I'm there now!

Well, first of all thanks for the info ! :-)

Now, can I connect a real Amiga 500 to this hybrid of PC + OS 3.9 ? I mean, probably it is just a matter of adapter ( i.e for file transfer) or is there more ? something that I can't do because it is a PeeCee and not a super pumped PPC Amiga ?

Anyway, I know it is not the thread, but am I the only one that thinks that with the new iMac the idea of a new Amiga is sleeeeeping away ?

Thanks in advance.

Amiga Forever comes with a system for serial cable ("null modem") transfer.  I use TwinExpress on a parallel cable (faster, uses a Laplink cable), or just ethernet (not really an option on an A500). On an A500+ or newer Amiga using CrossDos is also an option.

Either way is fine once you've worked out the mechanics of it all (takes a little reading).

Sorry, TwinExpress works over serial - it's PC2Amiga that runs on the parallel port!

You are allowed to download the AMIGA ROM from wherever you like and use it too as long as you own the AMIGA computer model that it comes from.
Don't worry about it, you're not in breach of any copy rights as long as you own a real copy too, the hardware. Otherwise emulator programmers would have been sued.

....You would have had to get the ROM code out in to software to test your emulator ;))
