OK I have scoured a few XP forums, and checked out micro-boft's sites and have not seen evidence of my seemingly unique side effect of having installed SP2.
The actual SP2 installation went well, and has not caused any real problems gaming, emulation, or Internet connections, aside from a noticeable increase to boot time (…yet).
I use Visual Studio C++. NET (Version 2002) patched with the latest security jpeg buffer overun fix, and have found that when running my SDI apps, with custom created fonts, the document is now displayed in a ‘zoomed out’ state(similar to a print pre-view), rendering the smaller fonts too small to be read easily.
Why do I ask the Amiga community for help on this you ask? Because I have found the Amiga users are extremely knowledgeable, and seem to have a genuine desire to help. They also seem to have the funniest wise ass comments that help lower the increased blood pressure resulting from XP ‘exasperation…
I was able to successfully restore to the Pre-SP2 install, and everything is back to normal.
Anyone else see strange effects from this SP similar to this?
-
Did the problems happen after SP2 or after the .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 upgrade? Have you tested your apps on other SP2 machines? (I can test if you want...)
-
That's the million dollar question, as I installed both prior to to testing the app unfortunately. I suppose I have to re-install again to be sure.
I appreciate you offer to test the app for me. If you wish to pmail me an email address I can send it to you. (It is quite small approx 350 kb).
-
Not sure if its the service pack....But I have another issue with SP2.........
Before I was able to make 216fps on a shooter test....Now it does 176fps a second........... after I installed SP2... So i am not sure if its SP2 that made it extra slow, or what exactly is slowing the system down.
-
One thing I would suggest after the SP2 upgrade is to update all your drivers or at least one that maybe related to any issue you have after the install. My printer stopped talking to my computer properly afterward. I also has a few networking issues.

hum,
sp2 is so new that there is a lot a teething problems ...

No problems whatsoever with SP2 for me.
For people that are having issues, it's well known that 95% of SP2 problems are caused by the new Windows Firewall, which needs to be configured for a lot of older programs to work. Software developers have had about 6 months notice from Microsoft about the effects of SP2, and the majority have done nothing, or are only just sending out updates when it's too late (*cough* Symantec *cough*). If you install SP2, update all of your drivers and download the latest versions of all your software.
Steve.

I installed SP2, everything went fine, but upon reboot I got the message 'Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Happened on every boot. Then all I had was my lovely backdrop to look at, couldn't do anything. I had to go in via the Task manager and RUN the add/remove programs, because I couldn't even relaunch explorer from there.
I don't have as much patience with the PC as with the Amiga, so I ditched SP2.
-
After all the problems I had with Windows 2000 SP3, I've become very wary of all these sweeping patches. I download most critical updates, but tend to wait a few months before messing with service packs.
I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of known bugs will be in Longhorn...

I have mixed feelings about stuff like this. On one hand, programmers tend to do all kinds of stupid things, many of which are easy to fix if they can spare more than a few hours out of their busy schedules. I can't tell you how many bugs can easily be fixed in a few minutes (*cough* Firefox *cough), but they would rather add some brand new feature that takes hundreds of hours of development to make.
On the other hand, it's bad practice to change your programming interfaces so damn often. I was really annoyed when Microsoft introduced the new PnP manager in Win98 (as a critical update, not in Win98se). Almost half the devices we sold to our customers refused to work with this "new" version of Win98. We had a lot of returns, that's for sure!

@StevenJGore
Yeah,
you can tweak/disable those pesky sp2 firewalls...
Have you tried xp-AntiSpy (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/blobrana/pd/xp_AntiSpy_english.zip) V3.83 is a little utility that let's you disable some built-in update and authetication 'features' in WindowsXP. (only 39kb! )
updated
Hum, dash in wrong place...sorted now , i hope...

Erm, thats a bad link!
I won't be installing SP2 until I do a fresh install with an XP disc with SP2 included at install time. Unfortunately the 1st release of that disk doesn't actually boot on any of the Laptops we have, so thats out the window (pun intended) for now.
Longhorn has been pushed back so far that some people recon it'll never get released. 64-bit XP has been rescheduled many times already. I really don't care about any of this, as I get paid by the hour :-D
I have all the fun of going on a course all about MS SQL 2000 Server next week, thats going to be a riot :-?
-
It looks like my problem was NOT an XP SP2 issue I am sorry to say. I traced the problem to my ATI Radeon 7000 card.
As with any patch, I faithfully upgraded my catalyst drivers to the latest Sept 2004 release prior to installing SP2.
I restored back tp the old drivers, and SP 1, and my display problem went away, and my custom fonts were drawn to the scale I intended.
I then updated the latest ATI drivers and was surprised to see the screwed up display again! So I installed SP2 again, and then rolled back the ATI drivers (again!), and now I get a proper display in my app.
Damm, I was having fun blaming Micrsoft.
Perhaps I should rename this thread to:
"ATI Radeon I just went and had to try it, sigh..." :-?
Thanks 'adolescent' for your help on this!
-
is anyone else here experiencing internet exploerer crashing everytime it closes, or is it just me, i only use it for testing purposes(im sorry but firefox 1.0pr RULEZ) but it is really annoying me and it didnt happen before sp2

I have reason to believe that the ATI Catalyst 4.9 drivers are made of meatloaf. I'm having all sorts of 2D draw problems and many of my MediaPlayer movies are skipping like crazy. I'm running Win2K and SP4. Anyone else have trouble like this, XP SP2 or not?
-

That's usually caused by a problem with a registry key. Take a look under this Regedit tree:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
...and look for anything weird. There shouldn't be more than three branches below it, and three or four keys in each branch. Try also deleting any keys in that branch named "ITBarLayout". IE will rebuild the toolbar layout the next time you run it.
-
I'm wating for "Service Pack 2 - sp1" ;-)
-
Apparently I'm the only one on the planet (yet again) who had no problem with the service pack. I had to upgrade Nero, but that's about it. I was using an old version anyway, so it doesn't bother me. Working well for me so far (installed it day one of the release) and I like the new features of IE 6.

No probs here with SP2 either, and thats since SP2 RC2. Even tho that version had a problem with DIVX codecs, I only had very few problems with that.
-
I just installed it and its completley messed up my PC!! Cant even get an IP adress. Well done to microsoft for completley messing things up again.
Time to backup C: and format i guess...
-
No problems here either on 2 machines so far.
@linchpin
Just use the system restore feature to roll things back to before the install. No reason to rebuild from scratch.
-
The biggest offenders seem to be the "name brand" computers (Crapaq, HP, Sony, etc.) and this revolves around driver updates (usually). Some of these machines want you to upgrade certain drives before installing SP2, and some after (hell, some are a mix of before and after!!)
My Asus mobo/AMD 2600+ setup is actually booting and running faster with SP2, and hasn't crashed since the install!
-

I miss plain old version numbers.

Having frequently repaired Compaq and HP machines, I can second this. *NO* prebuilt system even comes close to the stability and performance of a good custom-built system. Given all the "hacky" software they put on their machines that do really stupid low-level things (like HP's control panel utilites), it doesn't surprise me that SP2 causes trouble with those machines.
You're better off only installing updates you get from the manufacturer of your computer, so you know their idiotic driver-level tools won't barf all over SP2.
This is also why I hate it when people complain that Windows is a sluggish lump of crap. Realisticly, drivers and background apps cause most of the grief.
Time to backup C: and format i guess...
A Windows tradition. Though, the last time I re-installed Win2K was a month ago when my trusty Western Digital blew up.
With this new Hitachi Deskstar, my system is not only completely silent, but Win2K system boots up in 18 seconds with MySQL and Apache turned off. Woo! :-D
-

Tried it. Every system restore failed. I got one to work, from where i 1st installed the OS. But it was soo unstable.
Hitachi Deskstar HDD's Rock! I have one in my PC here its SOO quiet and quick!
-
To be honest, I havent had any problems at all with service pack 2; in fact... I find alot of the updates quite pleasant (cant believe I said that)
Some people I know however, have "cracked" copies of xp... Alot of the cd keys that come with those copies are blacklisted, which wont allow an install of sp1/sp2. a handful of keys seem to be on the borderline though (educational bulk keys that have 'escaped' into public); which would allow an install but then crash and burn after a reboot
..seen alot of oem copies of xp supplied with HP / Dell machines that tend to die after an install of sp1a / sp2 too
-
That could be what happened to me. I have an OEM install of XP Pro, but it is on a custom machine, not HP or Compa*.
After I installed SP2 winblows explorer refused to run. At least I have not suffered a complete disaster like others have.
I think I'll wait a while for an updated version.
-
Also have an OEM install of Win XP on my DELL Workstation dual Xeon machine and after I installed SP2 I lost contact with my router after 3-5 minutes after a reboot.
SP2 had somehow messed up my network card driver, a reinstall of the driver solved my problem.
-
For people having trouble with networking and SP2 (or any Windows trouble), either read this forum (http://www.windowsbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27) or this (http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/index.php) or post any questions you have.

System restore for XP is a really bad leftover from Windows ME, and I've never seen it work properly. Backups are your only hope.
Some people I know however, have "cracked" copies of xp.
Still beats having to re-register XP every time you change something. By the time you really need a new service pack, you're probably due for a re-install, anyway.

Actually, that's a typical problem with NT-class machines. NT4 at work did the same thing to me, and moving to Win2K didn't help, either. I think it has to do with the way Windows caches workgroups, and doesn't tolerate machines turning on and off randomly. If there's a way to force Windows to refresh the workgroup listing from within Explorer, I haven't found it yet (of course, I don't work there anymore, so I don't care, either).
-
I downloaded SP2, burned it on a CD (network install), and put it on the shelf. Since I took my XP machine off of the Internet and reinstalled it without firewall, etc, it has been working great. Since it will not be on the Internet, I know of no reason to install SP2.
-
Everything I have heard about SP2 is that it sucks, nothing works after the installation, and if it does work, everything works slower and stuff..
Except myself.. I installed SP2 a couple of days after it was released on my Dell machine, and I havent had any troubles what-so-ever with it... Except for the security center bugging me that I didnt seem to have any antivirus software, until I figured out how to turn off the warnings... :-)
-
It worked fine on my system, but a friends computer nuked after SP2 installation. Nuked as in start to boot, reboot, repeat. No safe mode, no nothing, nuked :-o
-
I waited a respectable amount of time, then installed it on a number of customer machines, all without any problems.
I think XP SP2 is a bit like Firefox upgrade users complaining that it nuked all of their bookmarks and similar problems - "Firefox / your computer is not intended to be installed rectally". In short, EBKAC, but in general 'mis/use of the computer' terms.
-
Installed SP2... Activation requester poped up... used System Restore to go back to the point before I installed SP2.
Problem solved.

That's what happened to us. No safe mode, no previous version of windoh's, just absolute bugger all.
We had to get my bro-in-law to take it away, put the hd on his pc, and figure out what it was from there.
There were a few conflicts with SP2, none of them hardware or driver related, once those were sorted it was rolled back to SP1 and everything's been peachy since. *knocks wood*
--edit--
Did I really just say peachy?! :-o
-
I wouldn't install it to a current XP installation, but I've installed about a dozen copies of XP with SP2 pre-installed, and it's worked fine every time. Lots more 'helpful' pop-ups than before though :-?
It's only a dozen as most people on the WAN want to stick with Windows 2000 ...
-
After I installed it, I turned off the FIREWALL and in the advance settings of the FIREWALL I selected EXCEPTIONS for File and Printer Sharing, and eDonkey.
On a previous SP2 install on the same computer, I had to enable File and Printer Sharing from it's properties but this did not happen with the second install.
-
If you get the product activation requester after sp2 install it's probably because you have an invalid activation or serial number.. What's even more scarey is further updates from microsoft will go out and check that activation to be sure that the update is being installed on a legal copy of windows..
