Title: Can't playt Freespace Demo
Post by: jumpship on February 10, 2003, 04:19:25 PM
Has anyone got the Freespace demo to work from Hyperion? I have installed it and have set it up (at the moment to use software rendering). It will load and goto the main screen, yet when I click on the doors for the "Start Campane" it does nothing. All the other areas work, iei configuration, even ones that don;t work at all in the demo (ie the Technical section just comes up with "not available in the demo version" or words to that effect)

I need help!

Thanks!

Yeah I did, past tense that is. It was on a A3k 060/Prometheus/Voodoo3. It worked VERY well out of the box. The only thing it required was the absolute most recent Warp3D install. This was using hardware render, as that is the only way a 060 machine could handle it.

PPC using soft render? Hmm not sure. Did you check Hyperion's faq on it?

You haven't got that A4000 then?! ;-)

No matter what I try it won't do anything when I click those doors! I have got all the patches, the latest Warp3D drivers and still, the other doors work, but not that one :-(

It is annoying as I would like to get the full version, but until I can get the demo working, I am not buying the full version.

Yes, I used to play the Demo when my PPC was still working, and used software render.  Not sure I can help you though as all I did was install it, run the config, and off it went.  Slow as heck on a Picasso II software rendering, but it worked.

No the bidding went to high and common sense took over:-(

As for your Freespace problem I'm affraid I can't help you any further:-( All I can guess is for you to remove it completely and reinstall it. If that fails email Hyperion directly for support would be my guess:-(

here is an idea, go get a pc version, because it seems as if the amiga version is crap

The demo may be crap, but the full version certainly isn't. I had a friend of mine play it for a couple of hours, then when it quit to the Workbench I heard him say, "What the hell version of Windows is THIS?!"

Jumpship: Two possible reasons:

1. Somehow the data files are installed corrupted
   on your harddrive
2. You tried to start the data files of the full
(PC) version with the Demo version which of
   course does not work
3. Something was done wrong during installation

The full version has a nice installer to take
care of installation.

As to WarPiper:

Do I understand right ? You did not even try the Amiga version and claim in public the Amiga version  would be "crap"? I am really annoyed by such clueless comments.

Ah, yes, I should have read the mail again.
That's *three* possible reasons of course (I added after some more thought a third reason but did not fix the first sentence :) )

to the trolls: freespace aint crap on an amiga, who ever told u this have no idea, i completed it and i noticed NOthing diffrent from the pc version , speed is nice and good ... etc...

magicSn@: as i told you before i love freespace and i got hooked, but there is still that 1 bug with miamiDx ,( ...

anyway to run the game on software render , u might need some help there, due to it didnt work here either , but 1. try to close MiamiDX completely  , 2. if 1 didnt help then check all the variables in env: sometimes here they mess up , but once it worked once its all ok. 3. u can try to ask timothy groothe (i belive is his name) who helped me get it running (and shogo) , or ofcourse ask magicsn who helped me also....

all in all i appriciate all help from hyperion and i have nothing negative to say about freespace except for that miamidx bug, the same that WHDLOAD has...kinda weird :) ...now if only..

ohwell the game is cheap (19 euro still iirc) and its totally worth it, but beware...the last mission is a PAIN in the butt... damn hard....

@ MagicSN

No you did not read it right, I said that the amiga version seems like crap, I said that becasue it worked like crap on my A4000/060 with 118MB ram and CV643D, and to read comments about other users having problems with their demo version does not suprise me.

I would just like to know one thing.

Is Freespace for amiga as good as the PeeCee version, or is it lacking in some Glide features(namely multitexturing) that made the original so good?

:::EDIT:::

Are the cutscenes included too? Are they the same quality?

AFAIK, the CV643D is based on the S3's Virge-chipset, which was known as a 3D-decelerator when it first came out. :-)
Freespace ran like a dream on my P166 with a Voodoo2 card, so it should at least be fully playable on a 060/60 and a Permedia2 based card like CVision3D.
Dunno about the Virge-cards though, but my old virge died on me when I tried to play Q2 via a D3D to OpenGL wrapper. :-D

WarPiper: Freespace on Amiga 68k requires at least
a Permedia 2 (or Voodoo) Graphics Board. A Virge
is just too slow. Especially as the game is in 640x480,
and a Virge is only halfways fast in Lowres. Play somewhere else, troll...

KingTutt: On your message I checked the source
of the Glide-Renderer again, and I could not detect
ANY usage of Multitexturing there. Maybe in Freespace 2 ?

But yes, the game looks exactly the same on PC and Amiga (at least in 3D Hardware Rendering).

The cutscenes are included. As to the quality: Well, in
the intro-animation we had to degrade quality a bit, so it
would not be too slow on slower Amigas, but all the other
Animations (the in-game ones) have same quality like
the original Animations.

I just hope they make FreeSpace 2 for OS4/A1. It would be good to keep the quality of the PeeCee version, if not improve on it. Besides we're talkin A1@600mhz minimum specs here,so c'mon.. thats more than enough to handle a game like FreeSpace 2 with full features.

:-)

I'm sure the Mac Faithful will also enjoy a slightly tweaked version ported to work on their platform too.
