Title: filling up A2058 RAM Expansion Card
Post by: orange on September 14, 2004, 05:20:05 PM
I've got A2058 card with 2Mb. What type of chips is needed for expanding memory to 8Mb? (I need some serial number or whatever, to know what to look for..)

And if you know any good place that sells them cheap, please tell.

You need 1megx1 DRAM chips for the 2058 card. You can go to either to 4MB or 8MB. The 6MB configuration is not allowed.
Here are some numbers:
Hitachi HM511000-10 (last two digits are speed. 10,12, or 15)
Matsushita MN41101-10 or -12
NEC D421000-10
Samsung KM41C1000/1-10 or -12

As to where you can find those now... I wouldn't know.. they are obsolete.

I see, thanks. BTW, can those chips be used in Oktagon 2008, too? Anyway, what would you prefer upgrading, Oktagon or A2058?

Oktagon uses ZIP-chips as found in the A3000, very hard to find and expensive.....

Some years ago I bought an empty RAM-board that would take 16 1-Megabit-chips for the 1st 2MB and 3 SIPPs (think of 8-Bit-SIMMs with pins) for another 6MB.

I bought it for a reason, I had an obsolte 386SX laying around, which had 18 of these chips  :-P

Probraly your best guess, look out for real old PC-mobos populated with atleast 2MB (everything smaller won't have the right chips), and not useing any kind of SIMM.

Late 286, and early 386DX/SX are good candidates.

I forgot to mention that the 2058 used dip style chips... Personally, I would prefer to use the zips, if I could find them, and if it really did use the same ones in the A3000. I think the smaller number of zips required would mean less power and heat. On the other hand, I've had a fully loaded 2058 in my 2000 and on my A1000 in an outside box for maybe 15 years...

Go to your local computer recycler or swap meet and pick up some old video cards, vesa or isa slot types.

They usually have the required dip memory on them and only cost a few dollars per card.

Write down what dip type memory you require, sort thru the old pc trash and buy the amount of cards you need for the memory.. dont worry about the speed of the ram, as most video cards were populated with faster mem than you need :-)
