Title: New Amiga Operating System
Post by: SidVicious on September 12, 2004, 07:25:38 PM
Is there any replacement operating system that can replace the Workbench 2.05? Any UNIX based OS? Any other OS? A port of some sort of Commodore 64 OS with Commodore emulation?

I got:

1mb RAM
40mb HD
68000 Processor

Btw...my Amiga 500 got 1mb too, but i can only run games like Bubba 'n' Stix and Monkey Island on the 500. If i run them on the Amiga 600HD they i only get "More RAM is needed" or something like that...
The Amiga 600HD got 1mb RAM by default, righ? Doez someone knows why i got this problem?

Yes there is AmigaOS 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 3.5 and 3.9! ;)

Any some UNIX/LINIX .

Your 600HD is eating some RAM so you really need to get that 1MB Chip RAM expansion to get games to run from HD, you can also get a SRAM PCMCIA card (upto 4MB) for 16-bit Fast RAM.

It's worth noting that upgrading the operating system won't affect what games work on your A600 much, it's a pretty basic machine and you have to go out of your way to do more than add the extra 1Mb of memory.

Some old games require 1/2Mb of fast mem, adding the extra 1Mb to an A600 will make 2Mb of chip mem, and no fast, so additional patching may be needed ...

As far as alternative operating systems use, you'll need more than a RAM upgrade. You'll need to upgrade the CPU to one that has a "Memory Management Unit" as *nix os's need this.

The A600 has a 68000 cpu which does not have one, neither do the 68EC020 of the A1200 or the 68EC030 of the A4000/030.

CPU's that'll work:
68020 + 68851 (The 68851 is a seperate chip), does any amiga have these?
68030, this came stock with the A3000 but AFAIK A600 '030 boards are a bit of a mod.
Not forgetting the '040 and '060, BTW AFAIK NetBSD doesn't support the '060.

Plus you may need an FPU either 68881 or '2.

Also I think they need a good amount of RAM as well.

(basically I wouldn't bother)

Where can i find extra RAM? The SRAM PCMCIA card cost around 1500-2500kr...(150-250$)

@SidVicious

You can buy Apple Newton PCMCIA memory cards of 1, 2 or 4 Megabytes and tghey will work on your A600 once you format them as RAM using PrepCard inside the "Tools" drawer of your workbench.

You can find the cards for like $19.00 US dollars.sometimes they go higher becausse they are highly sought after.  I would not pay more than $30.00 for a 4 Meg card...........even that is a little high, but really the only option besides the 1Mb chip that goes under the TrapDoor (which you should definitely get)
