Title: Pal Mode on a NTSC 2000
Post by: EdKing on September 06, 2004, 11:37:01 PM
I have a NTSC Amiga 2000 (6.x MB) with 3.1 roms(40.63KS) and ECS Agnus and Denise chips. I want to be able to boot in PAL mode via the Startup options available by holding both mouse buttons down while booting. I have tried this but it doesn't seem to work. Is this possible on a 2000 ? The main reason is a lot of the games available from BTTR are in PAL mode.

Can you toggle between PAL and NTSC by pressing any key while in the boot menu?  If not then you would seem to have a hardware issue preventing you from changing to PAL... but AFAIK all you need is the newer Agnus which you have.

I never had a lot of luck with the boot menu switcher.  You might try something like Degrader, or 60hzemulator.  I used 60hzemulator a lot, it had a hotkey you could press to switch to PAL at any time, and I think it installed itself to survive resets.

There is a cool little program that will write to the bootblock code to launch the disk in PAL mode!  Seems to work on most game disks, even some that already have code in the bootblock!  Works every time!  I think its called Install Switch or something, if anyone wants it I can send it.

Other than that you can get tools that will force the machine into PAL on a reboot, like PALboot or such...

I can toggle between PAL/NTSC by hitting a key, I set the display to PAL, but when I boot from a floppy it goes back to NTSC (missing lower part of screen on PAL games). I am wondering if it has something to do with the way my FusionForty accelerator boots the machine.

@TjLaZer

I would like that utility, I want anything that will force my games to PAL that need PAL but I also want anything that will force PAL games to work in NTSC mode such as RuffNTumble.I want to play this in NTSC mode.

@EdKing

My Amiga600 does the same thing, that even though I select PAL, it doesnt stay that way..........your best bet is (and this is something you should have anyway) is to get WHDLoad....it lets you install many many Games onto HD and run them in PAL or NTSC with a tooltype.  GREAT!!!

Could be...  But the early-startup PAL option never worked so well on my A1200, either.  Best to use Degrader or TUDE with the "50hz System" and "Survive Resets" options.

The only chip you should need for a system-generated PAL is the 8372A or newer Agnus.

@TjLaZer

I found the program SwitchInst130.lha on the Aminet. I think this is the program you were talking about. It lets you install a PAL or NTSC switch to the bootblock.

Thanks for the lead, it has solved my problem.

Ah, I'd forgotten about that little util. It never worked for me, but I think I tried it on one disk and gave up on it when it didn't work  :-D

When I've used the boot into PAL mode on my Amigas, I've also had to change my screen mode to PAL once I booted up in Workbench.

Otherwise I've used Degrader myself...
