Well, I finally got SMBFS to connect my Amiga to my PC. I just figured I'd post a few tips for anyone else who goes through this little adventure.
1. SMBFS doesn't seem to like having Samba running.
2. You can't use any special characters in your Computer's Name
3. Windows98/ME/XP systens don't like the /all to access there drives.
4. Don't do anything else after you start your TCP/IP stack before running SMBFS
5. Be prepared for your Amiga to Guru (always) when you try to stop SMBFS
6. Be prepared for your Amiga to crash (somtimes) when you start SMBFS

I'm afraid I never had any of these problems. SMBFS never crashed on me once.

SMBFS is rock solid here...
OS4 can sometimes become unstable if you've installed older programs on it.
Do a "list libs:" in the cli and look at the dates of the files in there. Compare any dated later than when you installed OS4 with the libs directory on the OS4 CD. If you see any in both, replace yours with the CD copy. An installer for an old piece of software might have downgraded something...

Also, if you've got a G4 it's probably worth replacing the fan on the chip with a decent vga fan, as the one supplied can't even cope with a british summer.

I also have the problems with number 5. It ony happens when I use Genesis as TCP/IP stack. Miami 3.2 and deluxe doesn't have this problems, but I need to re-install Miami. I messed up the installation.

1. No problems with SMBFS here either. Using SMBFS 1.63 and Samba 2.0.7, with MiamiDX.
Are you sure you have both Samba and your TCP/IP stack set up correctly?
2. Never tried with special chrs in the computer name, but I would have expected some chrs are OK like underscore. Spaces in machine names are a bad thing.
3. I have accessed windows 95 and 98 machines, but didn't have much luck with an XP box. Probably due to the way it does encrypted passwords, but I couldn't be arsed messing with windows to try and sort it out.
4. Running MiamiDX 24/7 here and SMBFS can connect at any time with no problems.
5. Haven't had a problem with 1.63. Are you using the "break" command to stop SMBFS? Make sure all references and assigns to any mounted volumes or devices are removed before stopping SMBFS.
6. SMBFS usually starts with no problems, and usually just connects unless there is a problem at the remote machine.
As it's a b*tch to set up properly, feel free to copy my live Samba setup and any other bits you want from here:
ftp://samba:samba@amiga.serveftp.net/Samba
Might help with some of your problems?

I am running O.S.3.5 on a 2000, FusionForty 040/28 1meg chip, 32meg fast, using Emunet to access a Lynksys ISA netcard(NE2000) through a 286 bridgeboard. I have tried with both AmiTCP 4.0(Demo) and Miami(version included in O.S.3.5). I have no accessing the internet(via dsl/ethernet) or accessing my Amiga from the PC's with Samba running on the Amiga. The only thing I can figure now is it is the bridgeboard/net setup, I am going to try a fresh install when my X-surf board arrives (thanks to Redrumloa for putting them in his sale) and see what happens then.

I'm running OS 3.0 on A1200 with BlizzardPPC603e/060 + AmiTCP 3.0b (from Aminet) + 3c589.device + PCMCIA 3com EthernetIII, 562D/563D. I did not configure, nor started anything else from the samba package itself.
For me smbfs (from Aminet) works unstable. I use it only if I must and afterwards reboot just to be sure, but it does not crash, during disconnecting (CTRL+C).
It happens to connect from the first try, but this is not a rule, if it doesn't most probable I'll see 'Interrupt 5 -I/O error'. Retrying is successfull after mostly several times.
It very often freezes during listing of the directory.
It misses files in sentences like "rename #?.c arch/".
Yesterday, when I've tried GG 'ls' on mounted directory (by mistype...) and I've seen for the first time in my life the message:
"Error with entries: 6 != 7"
It often freezes during downloading after creating local empty file, before getting data.
When the transfer freezes, even ping stops working.
I had much trouble for two days to copy one .lha archive
from Amiga to PC. Changing the name of the file to 'g', then copying then changing it back solved this case (???).
I know its not so easy to judge what exactly is failing, as several software packages have to cooperate tightly and fault on one can show up on the other (AmiTCP, 3c589.device, smbfs, dos.library).
Mayby it's good idea that everyone, who uses this, types his exact configuration and the remarks how it's working for him - mayby we'll find the thing that shows up in each failing configuration (OS3.0, AmiTCP 3.0b?).
Cheers

@EdKing:
Increase the stack-size before starting SMBFS, a value of say 65536 made it stable for me.

@patrik
Thanks for the tip. Setting the stack up to 66000 solved all the problems except for using
the /all to access all the drives on the PC.

The X-Surf II I got from Compuquick had an install CD that did a fast Samba install for me. One nice thing is it doesn't overwrite your old Miami settings. When you hit the StartEthernet icon, it launches a script that has Miami use a different prefs file. I think they did ths so you could have access to your old config in case things don't work right.
I haven't been able to test this since I don't have another computer on my local network at this time...

I ave about a 2 to 3 week wait for my X-Surf (on back order), does the install disk
have settings for AmiTCP ?
I was playing around last night and I found I could access my Amiga using SMBFS from
Amiga Forever running on my PC. I thought it was pretty cool networking my real Amiga
to an emulated Amiga. I know, I need to get a life.

SMBFS used to work ok on my A1. Now it just hangs the machine. I can only assume I've installed something thats put an older lib in it !!
I've got the stack set at 100000

smbfs works stable here with MorphOS, I use it to mount HDs of remote linux system (I've heard of some slight problems with Windows remote systems, oh the irony :-)). Stack is set to 32k.
I currently use smbfs 1.66, but previous versions haven't had any troubles either.

According to the Readme it has installs for AmiTCP Genesis (standalone or with Netconnect 2 or greater) as well as for Miami...
BTW, the Install CD that came with it was an unlabeled burned CD. I don't know if that's how Compuquick bundled it or if Individual Computers was being lazy... It was only holding over 8MB of files too.
