Title: the "Gmail Invite" thread
Post by: T_Bone on September 02, 2004, 04:58:20 AM
Has anyone noticed that if you try to send a Gmail invite to a hotmail address, it bounces? It also bounces if you try to send the invite from a hotmail account.

 :roll:

Hmmm, the invite link, pasted into a text file, and zipped, mailed as an attachment, bounces!

I actually had to encrypt the zip file. Geeze.

WTH is an "invite"? :-?

@Whabang

GMail is still beta. The only way you can presently get an account is by invite from an existing user.

It's easy.

Go to Fark.com, register, go into the forums and beg! :lol:
There's even an ongoing thread to get all fark.com members invited to gmail. So far, everyone who's publically begged has been invited eventually.

The only stipulation being, is that you are supposed to invite 2 people from fark forums in return, not that anyone could force you to though. I did only because it's probably evil or something, not to. :-)

Should have more invites soon.

Server Error

Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

I've been trying all afternoon - guess it is in beta! :lol:

Shame I didn't get a heads up earlier, then I would have got the username I wanted - the one I've got is pretty good tho'

No, straight Mozilla

edit: I'm just trying IE...and it works!
edit: Doh! No it doesn't. I can get the log in screen, and then when I hit enter I get a server error :-(

It seems the web interface is making very heavy use of javascript/DHTML. I expect making it work as well as it does (when it is working) across the spectrum of currently popular browsers took some real effort.

No problems in Firefox, btw.

It's working now.

How do I invite people? Or do I have to wait for that privilege - I can't see any obvious link on the page...

Once you send and receive a few mails, you will get a number of invites to use. Don't worry, you can't miss it once you get  them ;-)

Invited Poweramiga who also went begging and recieved 7 invites, gave me 2 of his, so I've got 2 more. For a while I couldn't seem to get them, now I can't get rid of them.

Yes, and I'd like a g-mail invite if possible please. ;-)

The only reason I haven't been on here is that my home computer won't let me post. I have cleared the cache and everything but it just won't let me post. I am on a library computer at the moment if you were wondering.

Now, any chance of that g-mail invite, anyone?  :-D

Is gmail the google email system if it is i would avoid it they it scans your email for for certain keywords and delevers adverts on what word it finds. :-(

It doesn't "deliver" adverts, it displays them discreetly on the right pane, just like it does when you do a normal google search.

Has anyone ever complained about the advertising on google searches? I don't even notice it.

@Blomberg

They're thinking of adding POP/IMAP access, currently there are gateways that will let you access with POP mail programs,and an HTTP parser/plugin is being tested for use with Outlook/OE/Evolution.

I can honestly say that so far, the advertising is far less obtrusive than any other free webmail I've used. You get some text only links (like those in normal google search) down the right hand side of the display and thats it. No popups, no banners, no image links.

True the mail is scanned (using the same engine that powers the scans they do whenever you search for anything with google) but the EULA makes it clear that no humans will read your mail (aside from the intended recipients, of course) etc.

A 1000MB of message storage is worth the inconvenience. Hell, you can always get your money back :lol:
