I have a quick question (I hope) for anyone that’s really in touch with the current Amiga scene.
I loved my Amigas, and if I hadn’t run into a rough year back in 2000 I would still have my babies, but enough about the past.
Spring forward almost 5 years to now. Why does it STILL cost an arm and a leg to get a BASIC Amiga 1200? I was sort of hoping I could jump back into the Amiga scene without spending hundreds/thousands like I did in the early-mid-and late-90’s.
I’ve been watching on Ebay for over a month now, and I haven’t seen an Amiga with reasonable specs (3.1 ROM, Rev 1D Board and Workbench Disks, nothing special.) for anything resembling a reasonable price. (Like $50-$60.00usd)
I’m just guessing, but if there was an existing user base of 30,000 Amiga users in the late 90’s… I’m guessing there are 10,000 users now. So where are the 20,000 extra Amigas at?!?!?!
Anyway, I know my numbers are purely speculation, but does anyone have better numbers and a more concise explanation for me?
I’m just curious.. and still lookin’ for an Amiga 1200!
Thanks,
Goji

Simply put, working classic Amiga hardware is getting harder and harder to find, I know thats the case here is Australia.
-
Everyone put them under their beds or in the loft and forgot about them I think.

I have 7 Amigas now. In the late 90s I only had 3. So, apparantly the extra Amigas are going to my garage to live out the rest of their years.
-
I think I can safely say that I have all the *broken* Amigas. :)
-
I have several Amigas too and am searching for a MIB A1200. They seem to be selling for over $250 on eBay. That is a little expensive for me. I guess I could do the Vesalia route and have one sent from Germany. About $150 new in the box.
Apparently in Europe the Amigas can be bought very cheap, especially the A600. I wish I lived in Europe. :P
Here is one: And there goes that friggin ID10T with the -1 feedback bidding his arse off!

Yeah, they broke, are in storage, landfill (shudder), in a collection ... or ... in regular use!
And of course the good stuff is in short supply, so prices rise with demand.
A1200s are what most everyone wants for retro gaming, with the wedge case, harddisk, AGA graphics etc, yet A500s arn't worth spit here even though they're even more 'retro' ... go figure.
-
It's cos all the A500s are in such shabby condition maybe.
Plus the fact that people returning to the Amiga might want that nice shiny A1200 they could never afford before (perhaps they still have their A500 in the loft)
-
Mmm, though the A500 that went for £10 a couple of days back looked in VERY nice condition ...
-
I'm the owner of 4 Amiga's:
A600, A600/030, A1200/060, A4000/040
About the A1200: I bought a brand new one for 79EUR
at Vesalia-Germany, + 24EUR shipping costs to the
Netherlands.
The A600's are also brand new, only the MoBo's are not,
but in exellent working condition.
The A4000 is also 100% (even the RTC with lithium-
battery) and is not yellowed.
:-D

@k-disk
About the Vesalia shipping, did they do a good job shipping it? Was the boxed packed well and did it arrive in good shape? Was the 1200 box new? I am also looking for a NEW in Box A1200.
-edit-
Woot!!! I hit post 400! ;)
-
I've had two boxes shipped to the U.S. from Vesalia. The first package was very well packed and in excellent shape. The second, unfortunately, I never received; they're sending it again (insurance.)
I own the auction listed below for the 1200. Who's this guy with the -1 comment? I read the comment and it doesn't seem to make any sense. Maybe I should cancel the bid? Any input would be appreciated.

@TjLaZer
Well, they didn't packed the "Magic" box and wrapped
paper around it, so it wasn't actualy really new
when it arrived.
But the A1200 itself is brand new, and I'm really
pleased with it! Runs great!
:-D
-
Well considering that I had 1 Amiga in 93 (A1200) and I have 12 now you can guess what hav happened to all the old Amigas :-)
-
I give a cozy retirement home to 15 of them :D

I've seen some questions about vesalia in this thread I beleive I should answer.
I do hope I will not be banned for not being positive about a company.
About a month and a half ago I ordered an new US keyboard 1200 and a DCE flicker fixer from them.
It arrived yesterday. You can read another thread I started why.
Anyway they send me this;
An A1200 which had its warranty seal broken.
It was missin a screw and a rubber leg.
Two of the plastic hooks holding the case together at the back where broken. The A1200 had a UK keyboard while I ordered a US keyboard. The books are missing from the shipment.
The flicker fixer was added inside the A1200 magic box.
It was contained by a regular plastic bag (these guys should be tought a lesson about electrostatic sensative devices).
So thats what you can expect when you order over 200 euro's of material from them (including vat and shipping costs).
I have not a a reaction on the complained I emailed them yesterday so I have not formed a final opinion.
But you can quess my current opinion.
Enough said.

I just bought 2 1200, 1 600 and a 500 recently. My parents couldn't afford an amiga in 90's so I just now "catch up". We had only a C64C with a tape but we were very happy with it...
-
Well I'm in the process of buying an A1200 for £74 from a guy on ebay. I can't pay him for a couple of days because I'm tyring to get this damn paypal payment cap lifted (he understands btw). It comes with a 127MB hard drive and a 2MB RAM and clock expansion. Plus a sound sampler and a Zappo CD-ROM drive.
I used to have an A1200 in the 90's and I had upgraded it with a 245MB hard drive and a 50MHz 030 + 68882 FPU and a total of 10MB RAM.
I'm going to upgrade the hard disk and CPU etc of this one I'm getting.

About a month and a half ago I ordered an new US keyboard 1200 and a DCE flicker fixer from them.
So you ordered just a Keyboard (appart from the FliFi) and got an A1200 for free and you are still complaining about them and about the state the (free) A1200 was in ?
They tend to be generous (when I ordered a spare CDTV board I got 3 and was only charged for the one I ordered) so when they made a mistake with the US / UK keyboard I would play it low instead of makeing much noise.
-
No, you misunderstood.
I ordered a new A1200 with a US keyboard layout.
Got a damaged A1200 with a UK keyboard layout (very genrous) and they dont seem to care less since they still have not replied my mail.
They ship sensitive equipement in normal plastic bags aswell which is a sin.
My opinion about them is not very good at the moment. I hope they'll reply my mail and set things straight but I don't think I'll ever order from them again. I would certainly not recommend it to anybody.
-
We all know the UK keyboard is better anyway ;-):-)
Hope you sort out your problem by the way :-)
edit:
I think I have 17 Amigas, but I'm trying to cut them down to 4 or 5
-
@Cyberus... then sell me some of them! :)
-
No, you misunderstood.
I ordered a new A1200 with a US keyboard layout.
Ok then you have reason to complain.
But a little to their defense, according to a Newsitem on Amiga-news.de they wre basically on holiday from 14.08 - 30.08 with only a monkey on a rope operateing the shop, maybe that`s the reason for the mistake.
http://www.amiga-news.de/de/news/AN-2004-08-00064-DE.html
When it comes to packing you are right, I too have seen some "funny" things from them, but till now I never got something that got broken in shipping from them.
-
I just checked Vesalia and they do not list a US bare model A1200 any more. I wonder if they are sold out.
-
Hello
We have a really nice Original Commodore Amiga 1200HD in the Original Commodore box with Toshiba HD and TONS of Software installed! All ports and drives are 100% working!
:-)
This A1200 is BETTER than the "Magic Pack" Amiga Tech amigas that had weird floppy drives and sometimes no clockport!
I will also toss in some nice extras like a GVP DSS8+ sampler and some games or so..
All for $250 shipped in USA!

Hi all,
@Lemmink
The delay in shipping has not really been a problem. That was sorted out. It started by them not having a DCE Flicker/Fixer on stock. The only thing they told me that they hoped it would get produced. This story is however already discussed in another thread.
The problem was sorted out and I was glad they found me a DCE FF in the end.
Since the FF has not been broken due to their shipping I can only suggest them to improve their shipping.
THe only problem remains is the keyboard problem and the fact the A1200 was a little damaged. (rubber leg, screw inside, two plastic clips on the back all missing)
But we'll see how this unfolds.
@TjLaZer
They could very well been sold out. But they should have told me.
If sombody want new equipment now is the time to 'harvest'. Items (US A1200's, Flicker Fixers) get out of stock very rapidly.
@magnetic
You are right. To speak in style;
Commodore A1200 are higher quality. Amiga Inc are poor quality. (not military :lol: )
I whish I ran into such a deal earlier. Now I think I'll pass.
And to get back on topic....Amiga's are where they should be. They are being used (or collected) by the people who like to do so. Ofcourse not all amiga's ever produced but hey.....
That would be the same like me asking; where did all those 26 million volkswagen beetles go?

That maybe somethimes the case. All I can say is that
I never had "weird floppy's or missing clockports"
with my A-Tech A1200's! The one I owne right now is
a perfect working A1200 with no missing or weird parts
on it.
:-D

I think one of the major problem is all those poor A1200's that are butchered to be badly fitted in various tower cases that were not meant for that... I've seen some horrendous job around, so in those conditions it's no wonder the motherboard suprisingly break down quickly... I reckon Commodore A1200's are good quality build, as long as you don't tinker with them to much and keep them in their original case (where they're meant to be!). I've one here I got on a car boot sales which was in a *really* bad condition (all rusty inside, looks like it was kept somewhere wet and dirty for a long time), on top of that it made four flights in the luggage hold (you probably know how careful are the luggage handlers;) and it's working like a charm.
Another explanation for the decreasing availability of A1200 might be all those numerous pseudo-collectors who are buying some Amigas just to have them, but never use them beside the odd game from time to time...
-
True.Perhaps there people who have an amiga somwhere, but just keep it. Too much trouble getting it of the attic.
Ofcourse all amiga's work like a charm if nothing really idiotic is done to it. Tinware has a tendancy to get rusy. I've got an A600 that is/was quite rusty. But some chrome polish I use for my beetle mainly takes care of that :crazy: .
Anyway, alot of miggy's are used by enthousiast nowadays.
