I'm an old school metal-head who prefers the extreme side of metal. I like everything from old school Metallica, to Slayer, to Six Feet Under. My metal exposure to newer bands over the last decade has been spotty at best. Lately streaming music stations online have gotten pretty good, and head bangers ball has returned so I am starting to see more and more bands, I want to start exploring more.
Here are what I am leaning towards as starter.
Opeth (Yeah I know, it's new to me) <- no brainer?
God Forbid
Hate Eternal
Carnal Forge
My Dying Bride
SJR (Heard quite a few songs, undecided)
Ok, suggestions? Recomendations? I'm not interested in nu-Metal at all. No cross-over rap or hard rock either. I prefer dark, angry lyrics. Underground or unsigned is cool too as long as they sound good.
Thanks in advance:-)

I've just got into Nile (http://www.nile-catacombs.net/). Most of their songs are Bathory/Deicide type stuff, but not about devil worship, and they do actually have some melodies :-D
I've heard Opeth a few times and can't actually get them at all.
I'd still recommend you pick up a copy of Probot (http://www.probotmusic.com/). I know there'll probably never be a follow up, but think of it as a tribute album to Lemmy, Max Cavalera, Cronos, Tom G. Warrior, King Diamond.
I haven't been following too much metal recently, I've been to busy finding out that I've only got half of Aphex Twin's stuff :-o

Today Is The Day. :-D

Samael is supposedly bringing out a new album Real Soon Now....

I don't know if they are Metal, but I really like Anathema.

I'm guessing you like kinda thrashy/faster stuff so i wouldnt really recommend Opeth, My Dying Bride or Anathema although i cant get enough of all three (they are heavy but tend to be rather slow and depressing, although maybe you enjoy that kinda stuff too, anathema's later stuff isnt even metal any longer it's more porcupine tree style prog rock). I'd say go for some Devin Townsend or Strapping Young Lad and probably In Flames and Dark Tranquility.

Hoya!
What about Death and Dr. Dre? ;-)
Be funky
M A D

How about some Saxon or Van Halen in there?
Robert

That's hardly new metal though. ;-)
If you want something a little bit different but still heavy, check out Botch. They're pretty busy on the ears, but worth the challenge.
If you want to go really off the wall, Circle Takes The Square are pretty cool, an insane twidly thrashathon broken up with atmospheric pieces and spoken word.

Perhaps this is worth a check-up.
Two mp3's to sample from the site.
It's fast, angry and heavy. Perhaps more hardcore than metal. But hey, the lines between them seem to blur for me atleast.
Raised Fist - Ignoring the guidelines (http://www.burningheart.com/bands/index.php?id=49)
My favourite album is Fuel however. Unfortunately you can't sample any tracks on the site. It's more metal, less hardcore than the other albums.

RAMMSTEIN
(Was macht ein man, der zwischen mensch und tier, nicht unterscheiden kann) (http://www.musicsonglyrics.com/R/Rammstein/Rammstein%20-%20Tier%20lyrics.htm) (means: what makes a man so, that he can't be distinguished between man and animal)
Buck dich, befehl ich dir (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/rammstein/buckdich.html) (means: Bent over, I command you to)
Dark lyrics enough? :-)

This is why I smile when metal fans say they've run out of music to listen to. The only difference between a lot of hardcore and metal bands is the way they're marketed. :-)

No. You've got it all wrong. The difference is that metal bands are evil guys, while hardcore bands are angry guys . ;-)
Metal == :madashell:
Hardcore == :pissed:
And the hair, off course.
Yeah.... that sums it up.... :-D

If you want something speedy and thrashy get the new cd of The Haunted. Otherwise the new Evergrey cd "The Inner Circle" would be an excellent choice. They play dark, atmospheric prog/power metal.

The problem with Rammstein is that they've become a bunch of moneygrabbing arseholes. Still, cool music :-).

As long as they make cool music, you won't hear me moaning :-)
