Title: Cyberstorm MK3 Flash upgrade - worth it?
Post by: Matt_H on August 19, 2004, 12:04:57 AM
For some reason, I never realized my CSMK3 was flash upgradable. I haven't had any problems with it, so I see no real need to upgrade, only for the sake of having more up-to-date hardware. But then I'm reminded of the old proverb, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Opinions?

System specs:
A4000T, 16MB, OS3.9.2
CSMK3, 32MB
IBM hard drive on cybppc.device
CD-ROM on A4000T SCSI bus
CDRW on A4000T IDE bus
CV3D board
Delfina Lite board
XSurf board

The current firmware on the board is so old, I don't even have the SCSI Boot Menu. cybppc.device registers as v44.2

Oh, and I'm assuming this (http://ftp.plig.org/pub/aminet/biz/p5/Flash-300399.lha) is the latest update?

Thanks, all.

Fix it!  Fix it!  I'd upgrade.  v44.2 is soooo old, there are tons of fixes in there since.  Make sure you follow the instructions though.

Dont do it if you dont need it. If something goes wrong you are out of luck for good. I did it to mine and never noticed anything better at all.

Heh, I was just wondering what flavor was on MY Mk3.  :-)

@ all

Thanks for the input. I don't think I'll be attempting the upgrade ;-)

Hello there,

I just sold my CS MK3 but as I recall, the only real advantage about the flash upgrade was for the CyberSCSI (as you stated) and for a necessary patch prior to connecting a CyberVisionPPC video card.

I would also concur that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".  Given the age and (VERY) limited support for the Cyberstorm boards the risk just isn't worth it (IMO).

Regards,
ltstanfo

I did upgrade mine years ago and didn't notice any difference, but I used to flash anything and everything to the latest version :-). I'm not as bold anymore.

I wouldn't take the chance if your board is working fine. If something goes wrong with the flash on a SMD chip you won't easily forgive yourself.

Heh I have a Cyberstorm MKII card with the "hack" firmware update that does the Amiga 1000 jingle!?  Anyone know which one this is?  That was a risky update from what I remember as it was not a "offical" one.  But regardless my MKII came that way when I got it from eBay...

EDIT:  I found it, here it is:

Does anyone here use that unofficial firmware?
