Title: What is the best BEER in the World?
Post by: gizz72 on August 17, 2004, 05:32:35 AM
Greetings,

Bad news for me though, my doctor told me to skip it and other beverages like iced tea, softdrinks, cola etc. my liver can't take it anymore. :-(

Here.. for me a San Miguel beer. Goes well with a barbeque. Finger licking good!(unfortunately, so does all fatty foods :-() :-D

So in honor for those who still can(which I'll never have the chance anymore), In what country produces the BEST tasting beer? Please tell me also and describe to me the sensation(I'll trully miss those days)?

At least I still have my Amiga with me(I'll never leave you, mwa mwa mwa...) :knuddel:

Where's my mineral water. :pint: gulp.

Cheers!

Gizz

Sorry to hear about your liver. Has your liver function actually declined, or is this just a preemtive measure?

Softdrinks?! I didn't realise they were hard on the liver. I'm currently drinking around 4 liters of Coca Cola every day, have been for about 5 years or so. Yikes! :-)

Greetings,

Not too serious, but I'll never be able to. Docs advice is stict on me. Need to loose 8 more lbs.

My ultrasound finding it's surrounded with fat. Yup Coke is also one of my major cause. sorry to say that. Drink it while still can and enjoy. It made me gain lbs. My wieght before my liver problem, was around 165-6 lbs. Now, I weigh 158. Doctor said my ideal wieght on my 32nd year should be 145. Sigh... Look like it's curtains for my beer drinking days.. :-(

Thanks for the concerns all. :-)

Regards,

Gizz

@Gizz,

Well I wish you a speedy recovery.

As for beer, I'm very fond of "real" ales.  I find lager to be full of chemicals and lacking in taste - although I am partial to a pint on a warm summer afternoon.

Zlatopramen, from the Checz rep.!
It's bitter, but still have a sweet sensation in it.

Hope you'll get better, Gizz!

Thanks, again. My condition is not that serious, as long as I keep away fom High cholesterol foods. If I don't, I get Hyper-Ventilated... :-)

Sorry to hear about your liver dude, the missus' neice (whos only just turned 8) has fat deposits on her liver, it can lead to all kinds of nasty porblems if not treated correctly. Hope all goes well for you.

As for beer, well, I would have to say Becks Lager is my current flavour of the month, its a smooth lager thats not too overpowering, pure refreshment on a hot summers day :-D Cheers :pint:

Shucks, too bad it's not the kidneys, they generally tell you to put on a few pounds in that case ;-)

Hmm, sorry to hear about your liver Gizz

My fave beers:
Zyvturo Ekstra [Lithuanian]
Staropramen   [Czech]
Stella Artois  [Belgian]
Duvel, Leffe, hell pretty much all Belgian ones.
Most Weissbier
Spitfire, 6X, London Pride, Early Bird, and far too many others too mention [English Ales]
I was very pleasantly surprised when I tried a bottle of  Samuel Adams beer a couple of months back....it tasted a lot like English beer!
Murphy's - this is only good in Ireland for some reason; Guiness - better in Ireland, but still good here.
1664 [French]
I remember a Latvian Porter that was really nice...can't remember what it was called, summat like Rigas Porteris...

God there must be loads more that I like....

Well, you could taste it, you're just not allowed to actually drink it. On the other hand, there wouldn't be any fun in that, would there? :-(

Sorry to hear about your liver. I hope the condition can be maanaged and wont develop further.

As for Beer - it really depends on the situation.

If Im at an Amiga meet in town its gotta be Zlatopramen - though over here they have sadly corrupted the name to Starpramen. If its a cool summers everning its gotta be Hoegaarden. If I have a pint with a meal during the day, Corona works with most things. If I wish to get flat on my back its Stella. If its a BBQ,or Curry either something Belgium  - or a crisp Oriental/Asian beer. Kingfisher and Tiger and good. I dont really care for British beers much, and I totally abhore the burnt toast soup that is Guinness..

So as a rule - Belgium and Asian stuff rocks. Czech stuff is on the whole pretty good, but have tasted the odd Czech beer that reminded me of fermented cow {bleep}. British beers imho are thick, goopy, heavy..  (I am now about to be assasinated by the Campaign for Real Ale!)

But Im off all that at the moment - gotta get back to my fighting weight of 16 stone, and alcohol gets burnt before carbs or fat, and too much makes you feel like crap so you cant be arsed to go running or lifting anything.

I don't know about liver, but with that sort of Cola intake you will certainly get kidney stones. I have 3 friends who had kidney stones in recent years, all 3 were told it was because of carmelised sodas.

About beer, I used to drink anything put in front of me;-) But seriously Grolsch was probably my favorite. I used to like many imports over domestics like Heneiken, St Pauly Girl and too many others to count. For domestics I actaully didn't much like the standard big names like Miller and Bud, prefering some cheapos like Meister Brau and tons of the micro brews.

BTW sorry to hear about your liver, I'd say time to follow me into sobriety. It's not as bad as you may think, I don't miss alcohol at all. It may be hard at first, it'll get easy with time. When you are ~18 your body burns off everything thrown at it, once you hit your 30s+ it's a different story.

Good luck! If you need any support, let me know.

Hmm, why 'sadly corrupted the name'? Star of Prague is a great name.
'Zlat' I think is Czech for 'Guild' (?), but people market things differently worldwide all the time.

Sadly they have corrupted 'Quarter Pounder with Cheese' to 'Royal with Cheese' in France

Honestly though, being an English teacher and very particular about language, I can't stand this snobbery whereby people think they should call everything by the 'authentic' name. We are in the UK, therefore words become anglicised - thats it, that's how language works. I don't go around insisting people say 'fora' or 'fungi', just because I studied Latin.
I don't tell people about the time I visited friends in 'Warszawa'. Or the time I went to 'Eesti' and then got the ferry over the sea to 'Suomi'

If you want travesty, then look at the way that the original Czech Budweiser lost its name to some gnats piss.

soda is c.r.a.p sugar water. i never drink that mess.

do some research on Milk Thistle. that is supposed to help the liver with it's antioxydant properties.

and drink alot of clean water. the body needs help flushing out toxins and you do that with lots of water.

consider drinking some herbal teas that may also help clean out your system. stay away from processed foods and eat raw freah vegs and fruits.

the body can heal itself - especially if it gets a bit of help from the owner. good luck!

I can second the tea vote. I drink peppermint tea, a few varities of green tea and sometimes even nettle tea. It's a bit hippy I know, but they're refreshing, invigorating, don't contain sugar,  and I think green tea is a good source of antioxidants.

Of course plenty of water, as Cecilia says, is a must.

Best beer in the world?

Hmm....if all you guys send me one bottle from your local brewery I can test them all and give you an answer. (In Germany there are like 900 local breweries, this is gonna take a long time) :-P

Seriously, I think Carlsberg rocks. From glass bottle that is, beverages in a can always has a different taste...and not to forget my local Brewery, Arendal's, which also is quite tasty :-)

In no particular order:

Hoegaarden - For a refreshing drink on a long hot summer day.
Kronenberg 1664 - For a refreshing drink on a long hot summer day.
Rolling Rock - For a refreshing drink on a long hot summer day.
Molsen Canadien - For a refreshing drink on a long hot summer day.

And my Iranian friend introduced me to a nice beer which I forget the name of, but is a great refreshing drink on a long hot summer day.

Thats a myth that Pulp Fiction propogated - its not called the Royal - they still call it the quarter pounder but with the french word for cheese.

As for names, while a name may be prounounced in an anglised way - for example I dont pronunce Hoegaarden properly - to change the name completely just seems wrong. It smacks of imperialism. An american friend of mine used to live over her as a child. She left in 1960 something and  came back during the 80's, on arrival she went into town, saw a Mcdonalds and it made her cry.. She said we had become too American. So as for brand names - Relish other cultures - including their beer!

@ Red

In my first year of university the local Aldi (cheap nasty German supermarket chain that sell cheap nasty food) sold Grolsch.. it was quite bizarre cos it was so cheap - worked out about 20p a bottle! Looks like the brewery was trying to find a British outlet for it... Now its really popular, in every supermarket.. Its £3.50 for just a litre and a half.. go to a pub in Cardiff and its getting on for £4 a pint.

Im so pissed off everyone found out about these lovely foreign beers cos its the only stuff I drink.. It now costs me loads!

@ Bloodline

Hoegaarden ROCKS! its a beautiful beer - but the rest.. Kronenburg is minging.. and the rest is gnats piss!

Go HERE (http://www.mcdonalds.fr/)
Click on 'Entrez' and it should open a new window. At the top of this window will be some menus (Of the computer kind) From the 'Dans vos Restos' menu, select 'la carte' and then click on 'boeuf' - there you will see the selection of beef burgers.
Ok ok, it doesn't have the 'with' part... :-)

Oh yes I do  :-) I live in Grimstad now, but have lived in Arendal for the first 24 years of my life. Anyhow, I can't afford to get drunk on beer from Nøgne Ø, so for my part I usually drink self-imported Carlsberg(Ahem! cough-cough) :-D

Right, so perhaps you were both correct in a sense. I wouldn't be surprised if it did say Quarter at the airport, since a huge proportion of people passing through won't be French. However, if you walk into a McDonalds (ouch!) in France, you'll find that its called a Royal, so overall you were right....

Title: Re: What is the best BEER in the World?
Post by: Bobsonsirjonny on August 19, 2004, 09:49:27 AM
The Big Tasty is a poor attempt at the  Whopper, as the Big King is a poor attempt at the Big Mac.

Its the mustardy peppered mayonaise that Mcdonalds put on the big tastey that bugs me - it over powers it, and desimates the taste of anything else. Here there are about 7 Mcdonalds in an 8 mile radius its crazy.. but if I want a burger king I need to head to Cardiff - not a prob cos its only a 10 min ride down the motorway. But we recently got Subways too - and two KFC'c have oppened up.. and they wonder why in a UK town a rat in no more than 50 meters away from you. {bleep} Chaver kids throwing their litter on the floor... Can any of them cook? Or do they just live off this processed rubbish? Bah... :-P

All joking apart though, it amases me that some families eat at Mcdonlads three times a day. For a start to eat it that often is not a healthy balanced diet. Its also bloody expensive to be spending £9 a head on food each day..
Title: Re: What is the best BEER in the World?

Interesting. It's the mayonaise that makes me like it! :-D
IMO, it's the only thing on McD's menu, that is even remotely edible.

We have a junk-food invasion here too. Last year, Two 7-11, one Max (local competitor to McD's), one BK, and three Pastamannen ("The pasta man", they serve pasta with loads of different pasta sauces) opened their doors.

I think people are getting to lazy to make their own food. :-)

My favourite beer... Pooh. I think I prefer Het Elfde Gebod (The Eleventh Commandment) most of all, closely followed by Grimbergen Blond. Both are Belgian in origin. The most amusing beer I ever drank was Straffe Hendrik, the local beer of Bruges. I visited the brewery on a moderately warm autumn day, after having walked off the soles of my shoes in that town. I hadn't eaten for a long time, and hadn't drunk enough water either. The beer was moderately heavy (6.5% or something), spicy, cold, and absolutely delicious. Of course, after one glas of Straffe Hendrik I was unable to walk in a straight line and still had to drive about 40 km back to my hotel. Normally those effects only show themselves after five or six glasses ;-). (I'm a big guy.)

Germany makes a few very good and tasty pilseners.

Two of my closest friends always talk about something called Gordon's Finest Blond. It looks like a pilsener, it tastes like a pilsener, it drinks away like a pilsener, but kicks you smartly in the *** with an alcohol percentage of 10% or so. It's nearly impossible to get hold of here in the Netherlands, but I've made a promise to myself to give it a try the moment I manage to find it.

That is not true! I tried the free beer this Saturday and well... I regretted it the whole Sunday and part of this morning too. And then I will have "Did I really say that?"- and "Did I really do that?"-flashbacks for a week or two.

So... no... Beer should be rather costly.  :-D

But... as to get back on topic. My vote goes for:
Pilsner Urquell

Edit: When I come to think of it perhaps the free beer wasn't so bad after all. It was the free drinks, wine and ciders that messed it up.  :-D

Some interesting ones to try, if you get the chance:

Fraoch, heather ale (from Scotland)
Baadog, Mongolian beer (err, from Mongolia, although the stuff I had seemed to suggest it was brewed in Thailand :-?)

There are a couple others that I liked when I was in the Baltics:
Alderis Porteris (Latvian)
[Porter is made from burnt hops and is the precursor to stout (like Guinness) - I think it acquired its name because it was purportedly drunk by the porters working in Covent Garden, London]
Zyvturo Ekstra (Lithuanian)

I saw tons of Finns with tons of boxes of Lapin Kulta on the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki, but I've never tried it.

I also used to have a poster for Tuborg Ol (insert proper Danish characters) on my wall, but I never tried that either....

Hmm, why 'sadly corrupted the name'? Star of Prague is a great name.
'Zlat' I think is Czech for 'Guild' (?), but people market things differently worldwide all the time.

...

If you want travesty, then look at the way that the original Czech Budweiser lost its name to some gnats piss.

You're both wrong:
1. Staropramen and Zlatopramen are different beers
2. Staropramen means 'old spring' (great name for a brewery?!)

But, I fully agree with the Bud thing...

Faxx, a Danish Beer, served in 1 Litre (Yes you did just read that correctly) tins.

Very very nice stuff, even when warm.

Wiesbier (or however its spelled) is superb also.

Though my all time favourate was a brew my Grandmother made up about 5 years ago as a one off, utterly evil stuff (It got you from the legs up, you head being the last to be hit) and a great taste :-)

I must admit however I do prefer wine, always have, always will.

Budvar is my personal fave, it's like Stella in sweetness but seems less chemical tasting and more crisp. Must leave the boozage too though, or Bobson won't have a training partner.

Yeah, I find some Belgian beers do that.  You drink a pint and feel fine but the legs become a little rubbery.  Minutes later it's like being bludgeoned on the back of the head.

:pint:

I do love real ales and continental beers (particularly Belgian).

However, I cannot understand the attraction with Stella Artois, it tastes of chemicals and each and every time I've been on a night out and something wrong has ocurred, Stella was involved at some point.

Won't touch the stuff.

Here's my current faves (can't be arsed to see if I've posted in this thread before):

1) Summer Lightning - light coloured, hoppy ale that tastes delicious and leaves you wanting more.
2) Hoegaarden - Wheat beer, crisp and slightly bitter/sweet in taste but deceptively strong.
3) Archers - No, not the spirit!  Slightly dark beer with a gorgeous aftertaste.
4) Co-op organic beer - The current PMC fave despite it's humble label.

Fuller's

Schneider Weisse

Franziskaner

..and my favorite "cheap beer":

Pabst Blue Ribbon...you can drink like fifty of them, maintain yourself nicely and not even feel that bad the next day. ;-)

Move to Europe for a bit then :-)

Have any UK real ale fans ever tried "Uncle Ivan's Falling Down Water" ? It's supposedly the strongest ale you can buy. I missed out on a large beer / real ale festival a few weeks after going T total and it was there...

Actually, in the States, you're fortunate to find a good beer on tap, Spaten or Guinness is about the best you'll do (unless you're lucky enough to have a decent local brewery). But thankfully, "specialty import" beers have become something of a fad, so you can usually do allright shopping at the "yuppie" grocery stores.

Sad to say it, but most Americans have TERRIBLE taste when it comes to beer. People really do drink Coors, Budweiser and Meister Brau, and lots of 'em at that. I know a few individuals here who *prefer* Miller High Life over something like Erdinger, while I would get sick drinking Miller.

To each their own though! :D

No, but i have tried Samiclaus beer from austria. Strongest lager in the world (or was when i got it could have been overtaken by now) at a stupidly high 14% alcohol. Don't try it. It's horrible and burns on the way down. Don't even smell it, that burns too.

Last night I was bought a few beers by some mates (I'm skint and hadn't been out of the house in days, so they decided to chip in to take me down the pub).
All the ales were off, so we ended up drinking Newcastle Brown Ale, a table of us all sitting there with our half pint glasses and Newky bottles. It went down surprisingly well - I haven't really drunk it since I was a teenager...

Newky Brown...  Brings back many memories (quite hazy) of my student days.  I keep meaning to try some but am slightly bothered by the thought that the flavour might not live up to the rose specs of nostalgia.

Blob, do you have a particularly expensive taste in wine (or beer for that matter)?  Wine has got to be cheaper per unit than beer.

This is what I was thinking. I buy cases of red wine, and the odd 5L box for when people come over, in France. And a decent bottle might set you back say 6 quid (e.g. Fleurie, Moulin-a-vent, Chateauneuf du pape), which would cost 10 or 12 quid here.
But you can by some really good wines in the £4-£7 bracket, Aussie, Kiwi and Saffer wines, Californian and S American...
I particularly like the Kiwi Sauvignon blancs (Malborough region) as well SAfrican ones. (If you can find it, try Firefinch, absolutely gorgeous). And there are a ton of drinkable Chardonnays on the market.

I avoid German wines like the plague (perhaps I've never tried a good one?). The Germans sure know how to make a good beer though!!!

BTW, from French supermarkets, you can get a drinkable 5L Bergerac for about 8 Euros, perfect for guests/drunk people who wouldn't appreciate the expensive wine, or me when I'm drunk, who cannot appreciate expensive wine :-)

Grrrr!

One of the reasons I started drinking green tea is because I can't drink milk very often (e.g. during hayfever season), because it makes you produce more phlegm. The other reason is a fascination with Chinese culture that I acquired in my early twenties.
As to black tea, that Brits drink, I don't have sugar in that in any case. Not since I ran out of sugar in 1998 and couldn't afford to buy any more!

Day to day I drink gunpowder, straight from the supermarket in chinatown. Not so keen on white monkey tea or oolong, but there's a great tea shop in covent garden where I got some sencha citrus, mmmmm.
My sister got my a purple clay teapot from the YiXing region of China for Christmas a couple of years ago, makes a lovely brew.

Mine, actually. I grow my own hops but I don't use too much, only 1oz for boil and 1oz for finish. I make a nice nut brown ale with a creamy head that isn't in your face that much. The whole thing takes about 10 days to brew and a couple of weeks in the bottle before I go crazy and pop the first one. When I can't get mine I drink either Fosters or Newcastle.
Nothing brewed in America by corporations is worth a damn save tempting snails and slugs to drown themselves out in the garden.... Where my hops is growing, even as we speak. To tell ya the truth, my ale is great, but my mead is far better. I'm sipping a glass now...mmmmm nice honey afterbite, a slight burn in the throat and a mild glow spreading throughout the body. Yup.
Yup. That's mead alright.

Let me know whe you need my address.  :-D

Two days without a single post added to CH/General, its not right I tells you.

Anyways, I must say that I have now developed quite a taste for Boag's Draught, anyone else tried it?

I'm not that way and you know that :whack:
You're teasing me, making rude comments about my tender side! :boohoo: ;-)

Anyhoo, "Cucumber time" is a Dutch expression for when it's summer and there's hardly any news, also considering the government is on  vacation.

Well it looks like Manchester here at the moment, pouring rain and freezing cold. TBH, I was actually hoping the sun would shine for the first time ever on my b'day, oh well, there's always next year :-)

Edit...Good grief, the sun actually came out for a whole 15 minutes, it was wonderful, then it started pouring down again :-(

Edit 2...Well, the crappy weather was well and truely made up for by the wonderful dinner that the missus made, along with the presence of my family and friends it was a wonderful occaision :-)

It has always been really sunny on my birthday.  It's never rained or been cold at all, not bad for Lancashire weather! :-)

the best beer (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050811/od_nm/life_belgium_beer_dc)

it's official!

Quote
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Monks at a Belgian abbey have been forced to stop selling their famous beer after it was voted the best in the world and was promptly sold out.

The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in western Belgium is home to some 30 Cistercian and Trappist monks who lead a life of seclusion, prayer, manual labor -- and beer-brewing.

A survey of thousands of beer enthusiasts from 65 countries on the RateBeer Web site (www.ratebeer.com) in June rated the Westvleteren 12 beer as the world's best.    But the abbey only has a limited brewing capacity, and was not able to cope with the beer's sudden popularity.

"Our shop is closed because all our beer has been sold out," said a message on the abbey's answering machine, which it calls the "beer phone."

And the abbey has no intention of boosting its capacity to satisfy market demand.

"We are not brewers, we are monks. We brew beer to be able to afford being monks," the father abbot said on the abbey's Web site.

Monk Mark Bode told De Morgen daily: "Outsiders don't understand why we are not raising production. But for us life in the abbey comes first, not the brewery."
