I bought on Ebay a 1260 turboboard with a 68040 processor on it, click here for more details (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5111516093&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT). Haven´t received it yet but I assume it will work. Probably another voltage regulator.
Now the question is, can you do it vice versa ??? Can you plug a 68060 processor on a 68040 board, let´s say a 3640 ??? If you replace the voltage regulator by one that will work for the 68060, can you run it then without problems at the speed that is set by the board ??? Can you use a modified 3640 board to run a 68060 at 25 Mhz ??? Price on Ebay is not so expensive for a 68060 (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4663&item=3832700709&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) ...

The Blizzards can ... you need to fiddle the jumpers I think, I'm pretty certain if you hunt google you'll find some sites detailing how to do a CPU swap on them.
-
If you were to successfully put an 060 on a 3640, for example, I believe it would run at 50MHz, since I seem to remember that the 040 halves the clock supplied to it. I.e. there is a 50MHz oscillator on the 3640...
Don´t qoute me on this though, I am only reciting from what I seem to remember... :)

Hi Effy,
pay attention that those 060 is a "NO MMU" and "NO FPU" model. (too cheap to be true).
For the upgrade to the 060,
http://obligement.free.fr/articles/blizzard040060.php
Ciao
PS- pay attention at the oscillator too.
i.e IF the 1240 is a 040@25 Mhz . . .no problem (it already has a 50 Mhz oscillator installed)
but if the 040 is a 40 Mhz one, it has installed a 80 Mhz oscillator that is too much for the 060.
Last advice . . .if the 040 is soldered (and NOT socketed) . . . . good luck :-)

Effy,
I have the exact same board, and am currently on the lookout for a chip to upgrade it with.
Keep us posted on if you succeed with the upgrade... Especialy with respect to performance with the cheap 060 with no mmu or fpu... those french instructions don't look too hard... I love the babelfish translantion of heatsink and fan (radiator and ventilator) heh..
I've been hanging out to find a decent cheap 060 chip.. but most of them tend to be those ones that don't have a mmu or fpu... not sure how they'd perform..

Interesting comments but still a bit confusing due to my lack of technical knowlegde ...
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/a3640.html (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/a3640.html) says that the 68040 can be 040@25Mhz or LC040@25Mhz but both with MMU appearantly, so that an XC68EC060RC66E without FPU and MMU is not possible as you guys just said. True ???
Orjan : thanks for the idea tbat the 3640 has got a 50 Mhz clock speed :-)
Framiga : I can not get the page translated, I get an error "the adress is not avaliable from this machine"
-
at this point i'm confused too.
You can't install a 68060 on a XCalibur NOR on a A3640.
You can upgrade to the 060, ONLY the Blizzard 1240.
Ciao
EDIT- just checked . . .those Blizzard is a 040@40 Mhz already.
http://www.juergen-buedenbender.de/ebay/amiga/index2.html
Look at the 80 Mhz oscillator.
It looks in mint condition and easy to upgrade to the 060.
-
FrAmiga : I know there is a 68040 processor on it (but didn´t know it is a 40Mhz) but on this picture you can see the board is a 1260 (http://www.juergen-buedenbender.de/ebay/amiga/index3.html) ... that is the reason why I thought to upgrade another board that is built for 68040 and to try to put a 68060 on it ... didn´t know you can only do this with a Blizzard ...
-
You can't generally convert just any 68040 card into an 68060, as there are some more minor differences between the 040 and the 060 apart from the voltage.
Tha Blizzard 1260 PCB was dasigned from the beginning to carry either an 040 or an 060, so P5 didn't have to make two different layouts. All the Blizzard 1240 PCBs are labeled 1260 as the downgraded 040er version came later and the kind of card it would be in the end was determined just by fitting the component to the allready made PCBs.
In general you can say there is only a posibility to upgrade an 040 card to an 060 if there was an original 060 Version of that card made (so chances are high the 040 and 060 board shared basically the same PCB-layout )
Even if you could upgrade an A3640 to an 060 you will not be happy with it, as the 040 is allready hampered by the lack of own fast-RAM.
-
That makes sense why the link that FrAmiga gives only talks about Blizzards ... pitty ...
So this also means that the board I have bought with the 1260 label and 68040 processor is completely normal :-?
"Even if you could upgrade an A3640 to an 060 you will not be happy with it, as the 040 is allready hampered by the lack of own fast-RAM."
Lemmink : remember that I have got a X-calibur for that :-D
-
@Effy
Why would someone want to downgrade their 1260 to a 1240? That just doesn´t make any sense... :)
-
True, it doesn´t, unless someone with a technical knowledge can repair a broken 1260 by using a spare 68040 ...
-
That may be... :)
-
the boards, were produced labeled A1260 even if they were 040.
For the XCalibur . . .you can't install a 060 on it.
The 040 socket has less pins than the 060 one.
About the A3640 . . . . the same.
Ciao
-
Then the only option I have for my A4000 is to find a fast 68040/40 processor to plug into the X-calibur and to add loads of Fast Ram :-)
-
@Orjan
those Blizzard, has never seen a 060.
Take a look to the front picture and you will see, that the place were should be placed the 3,3 voltage regulator, is clean and never soldered or removed.
http://www.juergen-buedenbender.de/ebay/amiga/index2.html
The 040 has no need of a voltage regulator, it take the +5v from the PSU.
Ciao
BTW- sorry but those card has the 040 SOLDERED without a socket
http://www.juergen-buedenbender.de/ebay/amiga/index3.html
http://www.juergen-buedenbender.de/ebay/amiga/index4.html
so . . . it is more difficult to upgrade it to a 060.
-
@Framiga
Thats what I meant... All the cards are marked 1260, regardless of whether there is a 040 or 060 on it, and the discussion from the top seemed to be "This is a Blizzard 1260, but with a 040 on it, so I should easily be able to switch it back" and I tried to highlight this by asking why anyone in their right mind would exchange an 060 with an 040...
-
Effy,
haven't you already bought the Blizzard on EBay?!?
-
@Orjan
68060 sucks. 68040 rocks.
PS: I am mad.
-
@Karlos
Because the 040´s used in Amigas were actually military grade chips supposed to be used in a secret space station orbiting the earth? :)
-
Er... yeah. What you said :-D
I wouldn't mind replacing the 68040 on my BPPC with a 68060. But then I might get lazy when optimising 680x0 code ;-)
-
FrAmiga : yes, I have bought the 1260 with 68040 on Ebay but haven´t received it yet. But I also have got an A4000 with 3640 and a X-calibur that I haven´t used yet. So I was wondering if I could place a 68060 instead of the 68040 on the X-calibur, but it turns out not to be possible ...
-
OK . . closed case ;-)
