Title: frustrating checksum errors = not a fun time with Amiga 3000D

What hard drive utilities are recomended for use with hds larger than 2 gigs using os3.5 FFS?    

I keep getting checksum errors. Even after a fresh format and install of os3.5.

Now I remember why I threw the sh*t in the closet 4 years ago. :pissed:

System specs:   os3.5, 3000D, Warp40 w/64mg ram, 4.3 gig hd, PicassoII, external CDrom, ZipDrive, ScantekE3 Scanner.

Since the main SCSI controller is basically the A2091 circuitry on the Amiga 3000s motherboard my advice would be to remove the 4.3 GB hard disk and install a smaller hard disk.  Only use the 50-pin SCSI hard drives with an Amiga 3000 computer.  Do NOT use SCSI-Wide hard disks.  If you follow my advice your Amiga will work again.  It is best to treat your Amiga 3000 computer as if it were an Amiga 2500 with Zorro III slots.  So think small, better made hard drives.  I personally use 1 GB and 2 GB hard disks in my own Amiga computers.  They are better made and are very reliable.   :-D

I got rid of FFS ages ago and installed Smart File System.  I run a 10Gb SCSI Seagate with no problem using SFS with OS3.5.  Also try using SCSIPrefs to set the drive to synchronous transfer.  Check your motherboard battery too.  Are you using the WarpEngine SCSI or motherboard SCSI?  Your boot partition should be in the first 2Gb of the drive and under 2Gb in size too.  Hope that helps you.

A 4.3GB drive should be just fine (keep partisions <2GB)... make sure cables sitts correctly in the controller and drive, check so you've terminated the SCSI chain correctly, try a different SCSI and shorter SCSI cable to make sure it's not a bad or too long cable.

a. Battery is defunct. A small amount of corrosion on the battery prongs and none on the MB.   I saw some info on replacing the battery, but no longer recall where.

b. Using MB scsi.  Will eventually migrate to the WarpEngine scsi.

c. As frustrating as it has been, I'm tempted to set it up for target practice...


I'd really like to get this system running again mainly for Lightwave5 and other graphics programs including the scanner. I don't want to put more money into it, and really can't afford LightWave for the PC.

I think the 3000Tower/Toaster system is almost complete, save for the latest chips to make the Fastlane scsi funtional.
