An old friend is dead, or nearly dead. I went to check on her today, just as every other day. I push her little power button and all the drives spin up (which is not always the case. About once a week I had to "encourage" a stuck drive to spin up by "jiggling").
Today she just lay there in a stupor, no display, just the whir of drives and fans.
Then I saw it. A faint flicker of life, a flicker of distress, a green pulsing flicker of the power LED. Bliiiiiiiink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink, bliiiiiiink-blink...
From the RKM:
exec.library/ColdReboot exec.library/ColdReboot
NAME
ColdReboot - reboot the Amiga (V36)
SYNOPSIS
ColdReboot()
void ColdReboot(void);
FUNCTION
Reboot the machine. All external memory and periperals will be
RESET, and the machine will start its power up diagnostics.
This function never returns.
INPUT
A chaotic pile of disoriented bits.
RESULTS
An altogether totally integrated living system.
Ah, not today -- not today old friend.
So, I'll take her apart, reseat all the chips and connectors again, maybe I'll see if she's talking on the serial. I've never seen the poor girl so ill and I'm fearing this may be the end. I've got an AmigaOne on order but looks like I won't get anything until later in the year. Maybe Ami4000 found out that I was looking at a younger model and just couldn't take it.
Sad day.

Sad day, indeed!
i know how you feel! one of my amigas had a HD failure a year and a half ago and it just broke my heart.
when i get the chance maybe i'll make it live again, who knows.
words just fail me. :-(

:cry:
I take my Miggy for granted too much.

What happen ?
Is the harddrive kaputt ? Put a new one in.
Otherwise pull all socketed ICs and expansion cards and put them in again.
Then the Amiga should work again.

Amiga Appreciation Day?
Take the time out to give it a good brush-down and cleanout, whisper sweet nothings to it before you switch it off at night...

Me takes my hat off :-(

Yes the summer has not been kind to 4000's. They over heat easily and can die easily. I had a CSPPC card die on a hot summer day, lol. If you strip it completely and reseat everything, see if it will boot with a disk requestor. Might want to try another CPU card.

Thats gotta hurt...I hope all goes well for her :-(

I know how you feel. Back in Oct 2000, my gf and I moved to Dallas. My Amiga 3000 had been acting up before the move and when we moved and I set my Amiga up, it wouldn't not boot. I tried everything and I couldn't get it too boot.
I was distraught about it and finally relented, putting it in the closet. A day later, I couldn't stand it so I took it out of the closet and took it totally apart and it turned out that part of the LED assembly was grounding out on the rack mount case it's in. I put some black tap to insulate the LED connections and it's worked every since but I don't use it much anymore. :(

Bummer. There could be many things that could cause such behavior. I'd closely inspect all the capacitors and especially the battery on the motherboard. It's also possible an expansion board is failing or not connecting well. Heck, I've seen excessive dust cause electronics to do strange things. I'm sure she'll pull through, she just needs some TLC, that's all. :-)

Good luck and I hope you get her up and running again.
Don't give up, Amigas don't die that easily!

@Glaucus
you shoulda seen my school's TV Broadcast teacher's VT2000, it had been randomly crashing, so he asked me to look at it. Literally fileld with dust, FILLED. Got an air can, cleaned it out, and it still works just about 24/7. Tanks I say.

I agree with jeffimix: clean it!
Some months ago a friend called me to help him with his dead A1200. He kept his Amiga two years in a cardboard box in the cellar. The moment he turned it on again only the leds were flickering. We opened it and cleaned each part carefully, blew out the dust (canned air ... nice stuff), closed it ... et voilĂ : It came to life again.
(By the way, we were really surprised that some dead insects lay inside the Amiga. They must have crawled in through the case slits. Hmmm ... buggy)
First try to clean your Amiga. If your problem persists ... well, than feel free to ask. Someone in this forum will know an answer.
Good luck!
