Title: cool case for pegasos ... what do you think about it?
Post by: on January 31, 2003, 07:12:38 PM
I've been looking for a moderatly prices case for my Pegasos... I happend along this one. I was wondering what you all think about it? I think it looks pretty cool like a nex-gen apple case.
I generally shy away from shiny cases but I think this one looks alright.

nex gen apple case (http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=11-131-101-01.JPG/11-131-101-02.JPG/11-131-101-03.JPG/11-131-101-04.JPG/11-131-101-05.JPG/11-131-101-06.JPG/11-131-101-07.JPG)

mmm nice but only if it has some kind of flip down cover (like the Apple G4 towers) for the cd drives, cos beige drives in a silver tower would spoil the whole look.

That's a nice case. :-D

Not as nice as the Apple G4 Towers though, but still nice. :-D

The tower certainly suits the MOS GUI look, but neither is my taste. MOS ppl will love it though.

Hi KennyR...we are conducting a marketing survey.  Who are MOS people?  Why would they like that case?

Best regards,

Well, you should know, Bill. :-)

But to be honest, the "MOS people" are the same MOS people they were 2 years ago, and they'll be the same MOS people in 2 years from now.

I think they'll like this tower because it is very like the default look of MOS/Ambient. I don't like either, because they don't suit the Amiga style, and I'm an "Amiga person".

I agree there... I generally go for antec/chieftec cases... I've bought the same model for case for 3 years... for a Pegasos with MorphOS I'm going for something less functional and more stylish.

Here are some cases I'm partial to...

Pegasos:
web-case (http://www.colorcases.com/cases/web.htm)
S. Agent (http://www.colorcases.com/cases/Agent.htm)
The Widow  (http://www.colorcases.com/cases/Widow.htm)
Lavita (http://www.colorcases.com/cases/207S.html)

For their partners CrossBee ;-)
XBee (http://www.colorcases.com/cases/0801.html)

And for the LinuxONE:

Nice look but has a few drawbacks:
-  if you do not want to use a floppy drive you will have an hole in your case. :-o
- you can only hide one of your beige devices, the other ones will give an horrible look to the tower :-?
- It is huge for a micro atx mobo which can handle only 3 PCI. All the space below the 3rd PCI slot is useless  (4 slots space empty)  :-(

Yes AOpen have some real good cases, my Peggy sits in this (http://english.aopen.com.tw/products/housing/h450-series.htm).

Nice paintjob window and so on voila a real cool high-quality allmost
silent case.

And no that is surely NOT German :-o

actually cdfr is right... dummy!! :-D

@CDFR

their empty but still useful ... you might want to use that Firewire on a backplate or more USB on a backplate/etc etc...

My latest Asus board has 3 plate's but they dont come from cards they come from onboard amenities... I'm sure pegasos could use some of the generic plates they have for useing some of its onboard amenities..

Hey, that's the same case I'm getting for my AmigaOne. I might go for the blue metallic (http://www.hardware.no/tester/kabinett/suntek_th656/suntek_th656_blaa.jpg) variant, though. I read a review of it some time back, where it got 5 out of 6.

Apparently it's a very good case, although I think you'd be better off with an AmigaOne inside it. ;-)

Im sure you may all have seen this one, but its worth another mention. www.frozencase.com (http://www.frozencase.com)

I am thinking of making the same sort of design but smaller, in which case I would need the smaller pegasos board (as opposed to eyetech-one) I will just have to wait till it runs os4, or until os5 comes out on amd/intel 64-bit chips and get me a micro atx board ;-) dreamin' i know...

I plan on building another machine into a sony subwoofer box which i already have one of (subbie picture (http://amigamonkey.com/ami/images/content/sony_subbie.jpg)) and still it on the opposite side of the TV so i can have some symmetry!

Hi teotwin...that is an interesting design (frozencase).  We have also looked at the SpaceWalker (http://www.spacewalker.com) (real name believe it or not).  Whatever the final decision is we do need to find something unique that brands the Pegasos (http://www.pegasosppc.com) (no wild west pun intended) in a certain frame of reference (as Apple did with the iBook).  At the same time, the Pegasos can be used for different things, so a frozencase might be good for a developers machine but we need something different for a product like the Psylent (http://thendipo.alias.domicile.fr/us/psylent.htm).

Thanks for the ideas!  We appreciate the suggestions.

Sincerely,

R&B :-)

BBRV I like the Psylent case... I think it looks nice... I looked into getting a little case for my peggy.... I dunno... I kept thinking 'what if I want to expand it'... but it definitly would make an impression... these days with everything bieng smaller and smaller.

I came across a metallic green one of these guys the other day and thought it'd be a really cool little PPC machine.

More pictures (http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/hotline/20021130/etc_quiz.html)

As far as I know the Quiz is just sold as a complete x86 Socket 370 computer, but since the company making it is mainly a barebones cases outfit, maybe they'll be selling the case by itself.

I got to say I think the Lian Li is a bit squat and ugly. In fact I want a case that reminds me of the feeling I had when I bought my first A1000 - the "thats neat" and you are proud to sit down in front of it and type - you do your BEST work on that machine because it gives you such a nice environment.

The A4000 came close.

The A500 when you first got it home seemed to bristle with promised power even if it was a poxy 68000 processor.

Nothing I have seen so far brings back that feeling.

Dont get me wrong an A1000 and A4000 case today look tacky, but I want that "leap" like I had from the Zx Spectrum to the A1000 - that "leap" from the A1000 to the A4000.

This is the other problem with cases being bought, there is no corporate identity on the hardware.

No walking into the room and someone going WOW you got a Mac! Wow you got an A1000! Its hey, whats the specs of your PC and when you explain to them its a G4 at 800Mhz they lose interest.

The Aachen pegasos desktops are pretty damn nice looking! Coolermaster right? and so is the lian-li 9300 case.
This is the spacewalker case (http://www.dataparadiset.com/images/produkter/chassi/swsv24_s.jpg) for those of you who missed that one. Only comes pre-built with x86 mobo, but if genesi could make some deal with them, that would be nice.
I want a totally clean case. No neat designing trix

Two things:

1) Weight. When I got my aluminum case, I was blown away by how much less it weighed.

2) Heat management. Aluminum cases run much cooler than their steel counterparts.

As for quality, the aluminum case I have is an incredibly well built case. This is not one of those areas where heavier means better built.

i see that as ONE problem...
there are so many whirly viabrating things in the case, that when they spin the entire case viabrates with them! the heavier the case, the worse the viabration + noise!
so IMO lighter cases are noisier

if you have a well designed case, especialy a full-tower, it shouldnt be much of a problem!

IMHO, i havnt seen any really good aluminium cases... not compared to the steel ones!

I have this case and I think it is a very good case.  You don't see the cdrom drives because the 'flaps' automatically open when you press eject.  So, no biege.  This is for the top two drive slots.

Hmm, interesting idea.  I think there's been a thread about him designing a logo but not about designing a case!
