Title: Do you know what you CAN'T DO with 3.0 ROMs?

Hi,

I'm about to buy an used Amiga 1200 but it seems that doesn't come with 3.1 ROMs. What will I miss without the newest ROM? I'm not interested in 3.9 as I won't have CD-ROM. If I had to pay for the ROMs, it will probably be a better deal to get a brand new Amiga 1200 from vesalia.de

I think running 3.5 or 3.9 is not possible on a 3.0 ROM.
There's probably more  :-D

Basically thats it...
there is cd support and a few revisions of commands...
You can always upgrade later..

On a plain A1200 you will not see any differences between 3.0 and 3.1. BTW you can run WB 3.1 on Kick 3.0.

But when it comes to expansion, there will be some restrictions:

- most 68060 boards don't run with Kick 3.0
- PPC boards either
- most graphics cards drivers don't run.
- OS3.5/3.9 won't run.

Also there are some bug fixes and optimizations on Kick 3.1. AFAIK it uses less chip ram and AGA display is slightly faster.

I have a feeling you can't use zorro busboards without 3.1 roms aswell. Of course, I'd be happy to hear if that isn't the case (esp. with a Micronik board).

I've been using a Blizzard1260/50MHz on a 3.0 A1200 without any problems.

CyberGraphX have workarounds for running on 3.0 (IIRC, 3.1 has WriteChuckyPixels() whereas 3.0 does not), a friend of mine was running a CV64 with CyberGraphX 3 (I think) on his v39 A4000 without any problems.

If you're just going to play around with it a little, run the odd game, watch demos and maybe use some classic AGA software (PPaint etc.) then I see no reason why 3.0 should be insufficient.

Well, you can't eat them, or use them as a suppositry. I don't think they'd make a very nice hat, either.

Which ones excatly? I've never heard of such requirement.

PPC boards work fine with 3.0.

You could use them as tiny bricks and build doll houses, like DJ Shadow. :-o  Yeah, he does that. 8-)

Yes you can! but you need to add flashrom to your starupsequens (in the first line) but it onley works whit Blizzard cards

If you have a CSA Twelve Guage CSA1250 accelerator you can't use 3.1 roms :-(

Check out 'Blizkick'; it will allow you to use
rom images other than what's in your machine,
and it's a great program besides. You should
be able to use 3.1 roms that way (you may have
to actually own the 3.1 roms for legal reasons,
but I'm not sure anymore).
