Title: recommend me a socket for Blizzardppc!!!
Post by: mf1200sk on July 28, 2004, 02:24:15 PM
I spent some time to find out all necessary informations about the sockets for 68k CPUs. I personally have BlizzPPC with 040 and want to upgrade it to 060. I´m not sure about the socket necessity, but one cheap and suitable would help me a lot. Has anyone experiencies with the transplants?

Thanks to everybody in advance.  :-o

This came up before somewhere. The socket is quite pricey to obtain IIRC, since there is not much demand for it.

There are certianly some other modifications you will need to make for the core voltage. The 060 runs at 3.3V, the 040 at 5V. 5VDC will simply roast the 060.

The mod is quite easy to do. The most difficult part is to dessolder the 040. But when i did this mod, it was easier to dessolder the 040, then the 060 from my old Blizzard 1260, now a 1240 one  :-D
But you'll need good soldering skills, because you have to change two SMD parts.
You have to change one inductor from it's original position (just step it to the pad aside) and a jumper as well. The inductor changes the supply from 5V to 3.3V, and the jumper changes ths multiplier factor for the 68k.
I can try to borrow my friend's digital camera, to make some photos to show you exactly where these parts are.

Edit: I forgot to mention, that i don't recommend you to put a socket in the PPC. The 68k chip, after dessoldered will still have it's terminals with some soldering. So it'll be difficult to put it in the socket, because of the thicker legs.
And then tere's the price issue, as before stated by Karlos.

Marcelo.
