Title: What is the most novel way you've disposed of a hard-drive?
Post by: X-ray on July 26, 2004, 12:48:53 AM
Back in 1998 I had an old SCSI 500mb drive that I was using for all my jpegs and sound files. It gave me alot of trouble in its dying days and after I had several pics corrupted, I had to put it out of its misery.
I can vouch that a Black Talon 9mm round does indeed get through the case, both platters and the control chips on the back, unles it hits the central drive spindle in which case the second platter is only dented

Dismantled one with an 8# sledge hammer.

People need to be aware of the computer forensics method called
`Magnetic Hysteresis' whereby magnetism can be traced back 10's of
times so that even a formatted disk can be re-read.

Modern programs can re-write the disk 30x times to permanently avoid
this, and modern drives try to avoid it because of the risk of
cross-talk on higher density platters.

However, the only safe option which avoids some smarta$$ finding a new
forensic method is to lathe the drive into dust.

As for your method, X-ray, I would use at least a .50 hollowpoint...

:-D :-D :-D

Desert Eagle maybe...

The most novel method I had was picking them up with a degausser (handheld bulk eraser) and listening for the muffled "clink" as the plates all slammed into each other.

:)

Well, I don't know if this is exactly disposing, as I kept it for a while
But Basically, I turned it into a REAL LIFE Icon!  Yes! a real Icon. Your probably wondering what I mean...............well basically I painted the borders of My Windows (the windows in my bedroon) to look like Workbench windows that have been opened up with a JPEG of the outside world (outside my room). Then right next to it on the wall, I placed a few Harddrives I opened up to look like those Magic Workbench HD's and stuck them on the wall, and under each one I wrote: Workbench, Work,
and OS2.0.............then I took a couple of Floppies that were no good, and stuck them on the wall to look like I inserted a floppy into this real life workbench on my room wall :-)

It was pretty neat!  I was dying to find a Microchip Large enough to be the right size compared to the HD, to be the RAMdisk.  I was also considering making my ceiling fan look like a PC cooling fan..............was gonna paint it black and put borders around it :-)

eventually I had to move and couldnt finish it.

Myself I can say lobbing one out of a three story window and watching it shatter, then get run over by a delivery van.

However, it is not the most extreme way of killing a hard disk that I have seen...

A friend of mine over here once showed me a video tape of an old 5and a quarter ins drive being strapped to a wooden post, then some explosives (home made) being strapped to the drive. Off it went, folding the metal casing of the drive, and penetrating it in places. Not content with this, it was again strapped with explosives, and detonated - throwing it several feet into the air, destroying the wooden post and leaving it with a gaping hole where once the spindle was.

YT2095 must have the crown for most extreme destruction of a drive. He lives on arcnet in #PBA (Powered by amiga).

10 gauge shotgun at 20 feet actually.  Probably one of the stupidest things I've ever done in my younger days, but back then like all young men, I labored under the delusion that I was "immortal" and that I would be young and responsibility-free forever.

@Wayne

.... uhh, and why was it stupid? I mean, if the disk don't work it's trash....

I made a clock out of a platter from a 5.25 Quantum HD once. It looked really good, though, so I guess that it wasn't really stupid.

Once crushed an ol' 20 meg 2.5 HD, using a forklift and a really heavy pallet. :-D

I think the ".10 gauge from 20 feet" part is what he was considering stupid.  Some lead might ricochet back at the shooter, rather than cleanly penetrating the drive.

As for me, the only drive I had fail I disected.  Made the platters into a little decoration to warn my other equipment what would happen to them if they fail me...  Not sure where it went, now, though.  (shrug)

Hard drive golf.

I trust you guys know about frisbee golf.

A couple of friends of mine, use the frisbee golf track, only they throw HDs.

really serious as well(keeping track of scores and such.

Kind of lame.  :-)

Loool!
I have to try that one the next time I play frisbee golf! :-D
(Now, where did I put that old 120 meg HD??? :-P)

I had an old 120Meg that needed desposing... so I installed AROS on to it. Took the case apart and installed it into an old computer.

Then I turned the computer on and watched in amazement at the speed at which the heads dance across the surface of the disk platters... it's a wonder to behold!

@Argo

No, Unfortunately, I don't think I do..............but some day i will do it again. The Borders I used on the windows were copied off my Visual Prefs Workbench (At that time). I was even gonna paint my wall to look like the Workbench backdrop :-)

Had a HD start to die giving errors and such.  So, I decided to speed up the process by dismantling the cover and pouring a can of Mountain Dew on the platters.   8-)

Ditto to that!

I use disk platters as coasters, and took the cover off of one, and made it into a dissected PC for a local school.

My old 420mg Quantum from my first PC.  Man, that thing was a tank.  Loud, clanky.. but it ran perfectly with no errors for 8 years.  ahh, memories...

1) my first internet connection
2) the first module I ever downloaded.
3) the first mod I ever made
4) my first time using telnet to beat around the VMS boxes at college.
5) my first time using ytalk to annoy a complete stranger from Iowa state

The list goes on... I no longer have a machine with an IDE that would recognize that old sucker, so I did the only humane thing:  I wrapped it in a static bag, said a eulogy and buried it in the backyard

That hard drive was good to me.

I remember in the old days, we used to bake hard drives at a few hundered degrees in an oven.  Not to destroy them, but to fix them!

It seems that one or two early hard drives had lubrication that could be temporarily heated to the point where the bearings would un-seize, allowing data to be recovered from the disk.

I once made an ashtray from a old Quantum full height 3.5" disk, I believe it was a 20 MB. Made a nice, nerdy ashtray.

An old 4GB harddisk once woke me in the middle of the night with horrible noise. I lost some old photos but nothing too important.

I opened the cover of the harddisk, put the drive back to the computer, powered it on and watched the heads moving back and forth. I helped it a bit with a screwdriver and some permanent markers BWHAHAhahahah :-D  :-D

Here is a poor quality picture of the result  :-)

I feel better now..

I've smashed them to pieces using a hammer.

I've ripped magnets out using screw-drivers.

I've taken steper motors out of them (old Western Dig.'s).

I am looking for more creative ways to dispose of them at the moment.

Sold it to scrap for less than $10. Takes up space in my closet.

OT: Old, unusable CD's does make a good bumber ornament. :-D
Beats the hell out of those bumber reflectors.

@ iamaboringperson:

It is quite diffficult to hit a hard drive at 20 feet with a shotgun AND DAMAGE IT MASSIVELY. That is because you need at least SSG or LG shot to do the job. That means larger pellets, but fewer in number. Simple mathematics dictates that the fewer the number of projectiles in the blast, and the greater the distance, the less likelihood there is of multiple hits on a target the size of a hard-drive.

Now on the other hand, if Wayne had a ten gauge slug loaded in an Ithaca Roadblocker, and he was quite accurate, that would definitely cause bad blocks on the drive!
I did some tests with some 12 gauge slugs and found them to be accurate to at least 40 metres (in terms of hitting a target the size of a dinner plate) so I reckon at 30 metres you could hit a hard-drive with a slug. But 10 gauge, that's heavy stuff, man. It's a brute.
(the lower the gauge, the bigger the cartridge)
I think the most gentlemanly way (and most promising) would be to load three cartridges in the magazine of an FAL assault rifle, put it on full auto and squeeze the trigger as if you are firing one shot.
Voila!! Pieces of hard-drive casing and platters spinning into the air from 80 metres away...

Hmm, I'm not sure about this, but I was once told that HD platters are slighty radioactive. Something to do with the way they are manufactured. Now, I realise someone was probably pulling my leg, but you never know. :-)

I don't have a creative story about destroying a HD, but I have always wanted to remove the platters, use a grinder and file to create the perfect Ninja star. I have to admit though, this is a fantasy I only have when I have spent a weekend on the couch, over endulging in old Ninja and Samuri films. :-P

A Seagate Barracuda!

:-D :-D :-D :-D

I heard on here ages ago that the IBM DeskStar was nicknamed
DEATH-STAR because it was so unreliable. That thing would probably
dispose of itself!

:-)

Seriously though, I break into a sweat when I see CDRs lying on the
street. I bet a computer forensics expert could just pick it up and
recover half the files on it!

Even blowing a platter up with a shotgun and it's possible someone
could use some technique to read the data off it. When you think of
the science you could just image the broken piece and apply the data
layout to a clean drive.

Don't forget what I said earlier about Magnetic Hysteresis either,
hard disks can be read even if formatted over 20 times. I think in
some of the older drives it can work as much as 30x.

That is why the most security-conscious eraser programs format over
the surface so many times.

I have no idea how this works or even if it's just a hoax, but it's
worth baring in mind if you have important documents that you don't
want read by the bearded Unix user at some platter recovery
department.

:-D :-D :-D

Maybe a bit by bit dismantling and an electric sander/Dremel would be
the optimum disposal technique. Then switch to removeable solid state
drives.

Can burn CDs I guess (as in in a bonfire or something).  I'd say something like sanding platter surfaces would be a good solution :-?
