Title: M1438S monitor to be used on PC
Post by: X-ray on July 25, 2004, 11:54:16 AM
My M1438S monitor has a long-standing fault where it doesn't display the red channel all the time. Sometimes on, sometimes off. Its not a problem with the Amiga: I checked with an RF modulator.
So, I want to get it repaired. Now given that there are many nefarious types out there who may not do a good job, I thought to myself why not just get an adapter (if such a thing exists) so that I can use the M1438S on a PC, and then take it to a standard PC repair place? Does such an adapter exist (PC to Amiga Monitor?). If there is such an adapter, will the PC guys be able to repair it without having to worry that it is an Amiga monitor?

Any comments appreciated

Id first check to see if the connectors are tightly screwed to the computer, second check for broken cables... if none of that I'd send I'd put it aside and get a nother monitor... repairing it will probably cost you more than buying another second hand.

If your 1438 is the one with Amiga 23pin connector (instead of the standard VGA connecotr) I don't think the PC folks could fix it... as far as I know there's not a Amiga Mon->PC converter (perhaps one could be built though).

Actually, there is such a beast, I've got one for my 1438. Mine is made by Micronik, IIRC.
As for the original poster: What happens when you jolt the monitor cable? Does the red go on and off then, or doesn't it do anything? If it doesn't respond to cable handling, the problem might be further inside the monitor.

Since the monitor works otherwise, it's undoubtedly just a bad connection somewhere, and that could be diagnosed with just an ohm-meter. You could ask a TV repairman for a quote, or ask someone who's good at electronics.

Check out this website: Weird Cable Guy (http://www.redmondcable.com/)

Any of us folks who already had a 1438 monitor when
upgrading to a PicassoIV has to use one of these cables.
Since the PIV uses a VGA connector, the 1438 doubles
as a PC monitor just fine with the adapter cable.
Just to stick to 640x480 or 800x600 (I wouldn't go
any larger) at the standard 60hz refresh rate.
Might handle higher, but haven't tried it.

@ Iggy: the red comes and goes, some times for a short time, some times for long. There's also some 'dulling' of the red sometimes. I haven't jolted the cable, but I'll get around to this when I have solved my CIA problem.

@ Bill: thanks for the link, I emailed them asking for an adapter or cable to allow me to use the 1438s on a PC.
